"While gun owners are sitting on their collective butts thinking that the NRA is going to save our bacon the VPC and other anti-freedom organizations are 'working together' (now there's a new idea!) to renew and strengthen the 1994 'Clinton' Assault Weapon Ban. If they succeed, we have no one to blame but ourselves. The time is now to start pressuring Congress and President Bush to...'stand down!" "

"Joshua Horwitz, executive director of The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence:

"We agree with the study's authors: more research in this area is sorely needed. But the sad truth is that the gun lobby has blocked federal dollars for firearms research at every turn. This study reveals the folly of the gun lobby's attack on objective research in preventing gun violence. At a time when America's gun death rate is again rising after years of decline, the government must commit more resources to gun policy research, not less."

"We anticipate the gun lobby to misinterpret the findings of this report. We expect them to point to the study as 'proof' that gun laws do not work in a willful attempt to mislead the public." ...

"...his portrayal of the gun issue is so one-sided that the author loses much of his power as an advocate, and ends up largely preaching only to the already-converted." ...

"No character in favor of gun ownership rights is shown as taking his or her position out of an honest belief that it is right. Instead, each does so because he or she has been terrified by the Sons of the Second Amendment..., or have been promised something in exchange for their support. ...In the end, the only gun control advocates who come off well are those who abandon their positions and side with the President."

"Meanwhile, the proponents of greater gun control are as angelic as the opponents are satanic."

" 'For years,' said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron, 'anti-gun groups, often citing the CDC's earlier biased research, had claimed more gun laws will reduce violent crime and suicide. CDC stopped conducting advocacy research in 1996 by order of Congress. Now, according to more balanced research, the CDC is basically acknowledging that its earlier efforts, and those of extremist gun grabbers, have been all wet.' "

"Yet the CDC, evidently unhappy with the available research, wants to study the issue more, arguing that there is 'insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms laws reviewed for preventing violence.' Waldron rejected that as more partisan politics."

Bush has come into office and appointed John Ashcroft and Donald Rumsfeld, we have allowed and continue to allow them to stomp into the ground our 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th and 11th Amendments of our Constitution of the United States. And, this is all expected to seem ok under names such as 'Homeland Security' and 'The War On Drugs.' "

An Albemarle County police officer and firearms instructor accidentally shot himself in the leg Thursday while unloading his service pistol outside a shooting range.

David Wallace was about to enter the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club for the police department's annual firearms qualification session when he fired a 40-caliber round into his right leg.

"This is a well-trained officer in the use of firearms," said John Parrent, Albemarle County's acting police captain. "It goes to show that accidents do happen."

Officers are required to unload their weapons before entering the shooting range, Parrent said. Wallace was at the range to instruct several officers during the daylong qualification session.

Wallace was in good condition after having surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Parrent said. He was unavailable for comment.

A new effort has begun in the District to help stop young people from becoming victims of gun violence.

The new public awareness campaign is enlisting the help of school coaches. The program is called Coaches Against Gun Violence.

It made its debut at Dunbar High School Friday afternoon as Dunbar played Ballou High in a football game.

Organizers hope coaches can help spread the message that youngsters need to stay away from guns, and that they can solve their problems without resorting to violence.

The program's organizers want coaches to help since many are role models to young people and they spend a lot of time with their student athletes.
