"It may be a cliche, but it is true: This letter is written not in anger, but in sorrow and concern. It is written to our friends about NRA staff who, tragically, have taken a course which, we believe, would be disastrous for the Second Amendment and the pro-gun movement."

"Two of us are Life Members of the NRA -- one of whom was an NRA board member for over ten years. And our legislative counsel was a paid consultant for the NRA."

"So we certainly have no animus against the NRA staff, much less our wonderful friends who are NRA members." ...

"But those who staff the NRA, without consulting the membership, have now made a series of strange and dangerous alliances with the likes of Chuck Schumer, Carolyn McCarthy, and Pat Leahy. And we believe that, if allowed to continue, this will produce anti-gun policies which the NRA staff will bitterly regret." ...

"... I failed to spot the verbal gymnastics (despite their decided lack of subtlety) used a bit earlier in the editorial:"

"Understandably, officers in more South Florida police agencies have been arming themselves — at their own expense — with patrol rifles to be on more even footing with criminals — particularly gangs — they encounter."
"Suddenly, what had been an 'assault weapon' (or the even less honest use of the term 'assault rifle') has become a 'patrol rifle'--presumably because it is now in the hands of a police officer." ...

"The White House would like to see Michael Mukasey confirmed as attorney general before the Senate's October recess. Until now, the focus has been on Mukasey's reading of the tradeoff between civil liberties and national security — involving, for example, the Patriot Act, warrantless surveillance and detainee policies. Those are indeed important inquiries. But there's another critical issue that triggers strong sentiment throughout the country on which a Mukasey Justice Department might play a key role. Mr. Mukasey, where do you stand on the right to keep and bear arms?" ...

"We harbor a great deal of sympathy for 21-year-old David Fielding, the VCU art student who was working at the Baskin-Robbins on Forest Hill Avenue in early September when a career criminal walked in with a gun to rob the place -- only three weeks after another robbery at the site. So do a lot of other people who question the decision by Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Herring to seek a charge against Fielding of reckless discharge of a firearm."
