"I have a vision of the first time somebody cuts another person off in traffic, of an all-out street war ensuing. First it will be the initial participants opening fire ... but then drivers coming on the scene will be forced to enter into the fray as the bullets fly and they come under fire. A 12-year old boy is facing a felony charge after he brought an unloaded gun onto the campus of Deerfield Beach Middle School Wednesday morning, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
The sixth grader brought a .22-caliber Colt single shot pistol into a classroom at about 10:45 a.m. and showed the gun to two other students. Another student told school officials what was going on and BSO deputies recovered the gun.
No one was injured.
The child who brought the gun to school told deputies that he found it along the railroad tracks while walking to school this morning. BSO is investigating.
The boy was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center and is facing a charge of possession of a weapon on school grounds. |

"'Acceptable aim.' I had to redefine that term after the pronghorn episode. The buck had run into a distant valley, spurred by a shot from another quarter. I'd followed, angling to intercept him when he slowed. The plan worked, and I spied him at 300 yards before he saw me. At 150 yards brush and terrain permitted a sitting shot, and I should have been satisfied with that. But just a few more steps would give me a poke from a steadier prone position. Hunched over, I dashed forward, flopped down and snugged the sling. The buck had only to walk into my reticle, now all but dead-still. And he would have. But two does spotted me and made off. The buck rocketed past at full throttle; I had no shot." ... |

Among those who know me, it's no secret that I struggle to even understand the motivation for or satisfaction derived from the activity of killing an animal. If hunting were necessary for survival, then of course I would re-evaluate my objections to it, but given the current state of food procurement (needing only a shopping cart and some moolah), I am of the opinion that successfully hunting down a parking spot at Wal-Mart on a Saturday morning is more likely to be a skill necessary to daily survival than tracking and hunting a wild animal." ... -------

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
