"The Good For The Country Foundation – a newly formed patriotic philanthropy to educate in the public interest – has issued its first White Paper. It is titled How American Gun Control Is Adverse To The Public Interest In An Abuse Of Due Process."

"'Some things may be a matter of opinion,' observes Foundation CEO John Longenecker, 'But deterring officials from their oath of office for mere opinion is hardly in the public interest. Holding officials to their oath of office is no opinion, it’s good for the entire country because it is their oath of office all citizens expect.'"

"Where officials are deterred from their oath of office is in going against an inalienable right on the say-so of activists purporting anti-violence goals. ..." ...

... "That darned old First Amendment is just a problem for progressives. All right, there I go again with an accuracy problem. It's no problem at all for progressives - until someone disagrees with them."

"Somehow it's fine for MoveOn.org, funded largely by a single donor, to lobby Congress - extort is probably more accurate - or air political ads or insult a commanding general. But it's an outrage for the National Rifle Association to represent its 6 million members and their rights under the Second Amendment." ...

"Second Amendment interpretation and the future of gun control laws in America were the focus of a ... debate between Harvard Law Professor Mark Tushnet and Clark Neily, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice. The event ... came in response to the expected certiorari grant for Parker v. District of Columbia ..."

"Neily, who served as co-counsel for the plaintiffs challenging the ban, explained that while some view the Second Amendment as a 'collective right,' the view that the Second Amendment protects a right of individuals to own guns is likely to prevail. He explained that most legal scholars on the subject support the individual rights theory, and that efforts to advocate the 'collective rights' theory appear hypocritical." ...

"National groups on both sides of the gun control debate are training their sights on Wyoming."

"The state has been waging a legal fight to uphold a 2004 state law that allows people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence to regain their right to own firearms by having their records expunged."

"Although all states have the authority to restore gun rights, the federal government objected to the Wyoming law. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it would not recognize the state's law ..." ...

"Student leaders at MTSU made it clear Thursday that there is no room for guns on campus."

"The student Senate voted down a resolution 22-5 that would have asked school administrators to request changes in state law to allow students, faculty and staff members who have state-issued gun permits to legally carry those weapons at the school."

"Criminal justice major Jeremy Anthony applauded the vote in a crowd of concerned students leaving the meeting."

"'It's irrational to think that after an eight-hour (gun permit) course, students in a dangerous situation would be able to hit their target in a crowd of 24,000 students,' the junior said." ...

"Middle Tennessee State University’s Student Government Association soundly rejected the idea of guns on campus Thursday."

"The Student Defense Resolution ... would have asked the university to petition either the General Assembly or the Tennessee Board of Regents to allow student and faculty with concealed carry permits to carry firearms on MTSU’s campus."

"The resolution was defeated with a vote of four in favor and 23 against ..."

"'My major concern with the bill is that people fail to separate college students from the rest of the public population. Issues such alcoholism, and suicide are major concerns that are unique to college students, not even by age,' said Lemon Keith, SGA senator who opposed the resolution." ...

"So what should a mayor do? Just let constituents call his weekly radio program on WABC — the one called 'Live From City Hall ... With Rudy Giuliani' — and whine and complain and get in his face without answering back?"

"Puh-leeze." ...

"When a National Rifle Association member opposed a ban on assault rifles in 1994, Mr. Giuliani really got annoyed."

"'Now the reason why the N.R.A. has lost all credibility is statements like that,' he said. 'By definition these are attack weapons. They are used for offense. It really is absolutely astounding that the N.R.A. continues to have influence in areas in which they make no sense at all.'" ...

"So, I find it a little bit strange that there is not more support on campus for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. I can only conclude that this lack of support is simply because people don't know about him."

"I think the best way to get to know Paul - other than ... going to his Web site, www.RonPaul2008.com - is through a brief 'Did You Know?'"

"So, did you know that Ron Paul:" ...

"It is obvious that those presidential candidates pandering to the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment fanatics don't have to face the realities of living in South Florida and other high crime areas where up to 20 percent of the homicides are committed by criminals armed with assault rifles."

"On the day that Miami-Dade Police Office Jose Somohano was brutally murdered and three other officers injured by a subject armed with a military grade assault rifle, Sen. Fred Thompson, in a Miami press conference, reaffirmed his position that this country doesn't need additional gun control laws. His inappropriate and insensitive comments were an affront to all law-abiding citizens ..." ...

"Ted Nugent calls this bill 'Janet Reno's dream.' I've blogged about it a number of times. Veterans from the American Legion and the Military Order of the Purple Heart have added their voices in opposition to this bill. The NRA STILL insists the bill is a good thing. I invite you to read all sides of the issue and make an informed decision."

"The NRA may claim that the bill is a good thing, and is consistent with 'NRA’s decades long support ...' But frankly, the only thing it can do is mire law-abiding citizens erroneously adjudicated as mentally incompetent and those 'accidentally' placed on the nutball list in red tape, as they try to get the government to restore their rights. ..." ...

"The bill -- sponsored by gun control advocates Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) among others -- has the support of the National Rifle Association." ...

"Deer season is upon us with all the anticipation and excitement for that possibility of the Ohio big buck trophy. That means sleepless nights for deer hunters after seeing the 'big one' but not getting a shot. In far too many instances Ohio’s law-abiding sportsmen and, in fact, all Ohioans are being robbed. As Ohio's deer herd has grown and become known for quality hunting, so have the instances of poaching." ...
