"U.S. District Judge Terence Kern issued a permanent injunction against an Oklahoma law that would have kept employers from banning firearms at the workplace under certain conditions."

"Kern decided in a 93-page written order issued Thursday that the amendments to the Oklahoma Firearms Act and the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, which were to go into effect in 2004, conflict with a federal law meant to protect employees at their jobs."

"Kern said the amendments 'criminally prohibit an effective method of reducing gun-related workplace injuries and cannot co-exist with federal obligations and objectives.'"
"First off, I'd like to know where he pulled that conclusion out of." ...

"A new report shows that when it comes to gun ownership, the United States is the most heavily armed society in the world. The Small Arms Survey found that there are nine guns for every ten people living in the country, with about 270 million firearms in circulation."

"As crime continues to rises, gun sales are doing the same. 'I've always owned handguns since I was old enough to shoot,' says Albany City Attorney Nathan Davis. However, he never dreamed he'd become an actual target." ...

"Only a few hundred miles outside of Milwaukee, in a town of 2,000, a twenty year old 'off-duty' deputy sheriff, and part-time police officer, apparently went bezerk, and went on a shooting spree, at an undisclosed private house, taking the lives of at least six people. The suspect, whose name is being withheld, was himself fatally shot by 'authorities,' some of whom may have worked at the same sheriff's office. Many of the specific details of this crime are being withheld, and there is only speculation about the motive. (AP) A mother of one of the victims suggests jealousy might be behind the killler's rampage." ...

"About 12:30 a.m. Monday, people who live in apartments above the photography shop heard breaking glass and a popping sound, and called 911."

"Detectives say a man smashed the front window to get in, waking up the business owner who lives just behind the shop."

"Allen Stevenson, 43, of Muskegon Heights, confronted the owner, Jeff Dykehouse, who then shot the intruder. Stevenson was dying on the floor when police arrived on scene and was later pronounced dead at the hospital." ...

"Wildlife officials say a female grizzly bear died after a Pennsylvania hunter defending himself and his companion shot the animal north of Yellowstone National Park."

"The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks said it confirmed the bow hunters’ report. They said the bear charged ... stopped within 9 feet of them after bear spray was used, charged again and was shot. One of the hunters fired a pistol twice."

"It happened just like they said it did,' said Warden Capt. Sam Sheppard of the state agency. 'It's self defense. The matter is closed.'" ...

"Sheppard said that without the spray, the bear probably would have mauled one of the men. The spray is not foolproof, but 'it's still the best thing going,' he said." ...

"... Seems to me the in fad of socializing with flesh and bones has now become a rarity. Now, someone defends brandishing a concealed weapon because some frail, old person may not be able to 'kick and throw' very far. I got two words for ya: Jack Lalanne."

"Studies now show that if you exercise your mind and body (probably soul as well) on a regular basis, you can practically slow down the process of aging. Learning self defense has many benefits to it. At least I can say it builds confidence. Can you say this about sitting in front of a computer in a chatroom or playing video games for hours on end? It also builds old fashioned — provided it is done in a public place, not in front of a TV at home — social skills." ...

"Besides holding these truths to be self evident, is the right of the people to bear arms. Today, Columbus Day isn’t the only occasion that will be acknowledged, Michigan’s Self Defense Act marks its first anniversary on today as well."

"Despite progress in the fight against gun crime in America, gun crime rates continue to be among the highest in the industrialized world. To help reduce the impact of gun crimes on families in Michigan, guns rights activists worked on a bill to protect hearth & home." ...

"Both sides believe the ruling could have national implications."

"If the South Medford High School English teacher wins her case (and I pray she doesn't), will students have the right, for personal safety reasons, to not have her as their English teacher? Will parents be allowed to pull their sons and daughters from Shirley Katz's class for safety reasons?"

"— Dean L., Medford"

"A Jackson County Circuit Court judge's decision on whether a teacher may carry a concealed weapon at her school could influence how the Medford School District handles certain parent and student requests to transfer out of particular teachers' classes." ...

"As of Friday, a few students had already transferred out of Katz's classroom, said Principal Kevin Campbell. An exact number could not be immediately confirmed." ...

"English teacher Shirley Katz insists she needs to take her pistol with her to school because she fears her ex-husband could show up and try to harm her. She's also worried about a Columbine-style attack."

"But Katz's district has barred teachers from bringing guns to school, so she is challenging the ban as unlawful, since Oregon is among states that allow people with a permit to carry concealed weapons into public buildings."

"'This is primarily about my Second Amendment right and Oregon law and the simple fact that I know it is my right to carry that gun,' said Katz ..."

"'I have that (concealed weapons) permit. I refuse to let my ex-husband bully me. And I am not going to let the school board bully me, either.'" ...

"Could arming teachers make schools safer?"

"'I think it's probably a good idea. If the criminal element knows there is no protection in the schools, then it's a prime spot to target,' said Joe Oberlee, president of the Oakland County Sportsmen's Club."

"A bill introduced in the state House would allow teachers, administrators and other employees to carry concealed pistols on public school property, if authorized by the superintendent. Additional training could also be required for those seeking authorization."

"'If your kid was in the school and there was a bad guy headed for the door, wouldn't you like somebody to be in there who could stop that guy? ...' Oberlee said."

"An Iowan who sits on the NRA's board of directors says the gun rights group may endorse a presidential candidate before Iowa's Caucuses. Kayne Robinson, a retired Des Moines cop, is a former president of the National Rifle Association."

"For Rudy Giuliani, 9/11 is the answer. To almost anything, it seems."

"After all, it's why America fell in love with him on that darkest of days, when the mayor was the only person on TV reassuring the nation. It's why he's the Republican front-runner for President."

"'For me, every day is an anniversary of Sept. 11,' he said in Florida last month."

"Giuliani wastes no opportunity to bring up 9/11 on the campaign trail. Sometimes, it looks like a stretch."

"Here is 'Jeopardy, the Giuliani Edition,' where 9/11 is always the answer, but the questions may surprise you:"

"WHY DID YOU FLIP ON GUN CONTROL?"

"'There are some major intervening events - Sept. 11 - which cast somewhat of a different light on the Second Amendment.'"

"...I lay no great stress on any other limitations of those monarchies; nor do I think any so essential to the liberties of the people, as that which placed the sword in the hands of the subject. . . . for he that is armed is always master of the purse of him that is unarmed. And not only that government is tyrannical, which is tyrannically exercised; but all governments are tyrannical, which have not in their constitution a sufficient security against the arbitrary power of the prince..."

"...That the whole free people of any nation ought to be exercised to arms . . . seems clearly to demonstrate..."

"Lenahan, whose estranged husband killed their three daughters in 1999, has said that Castle Rock police could have prevented their deaths if they had enforced her restraining order against him."

"Instead, her 30-year-old husband, Simon Gonzales, shot their three daughters before dying in a shootout with Castle Rock police."

"Tyler Peterson, 20, who later died after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers, had been in a relationship with one of the victims, authorities said at a news conference." ...

Submitter's Note: You'll quickly notice there's a drastic change in terminology when the shooter is one of 'the elite'. What is usually referred to as an evil, mean, & nasty 'assault weapon' suddenly becomes a demure 'rifle' when the murderer happens to be a law enforcement officer. I'll be curious to see how our esteemed pendejos at the Brady Bunch spin this one.

"But the server became operational again this afternoon at about 2:30 p.m., Helm said."

"Helm said the TBI would try to clear its 'slight backlog' of background checks by 10:30 p.m."

"A machine gun. What is the practicality in owning a machine gun? The better question is: why do I need a practical reason to own a machine gun? A machine gun is dangerous, but a car is dangerous. If I collect firearms, can the government prevent me from owning one? Should the government limit what I can or cannot own? Most profoundly, the answer is no as reiterated through the Constitution and James Madison." ...

"So, do I need a machine gun? No. Do I want a machine gun? No. However, the point is, I want the possibility of owning a machine gun and to keep it that way. Government involvement in the people's lives should be strictly limited to the bare minimum in all aspects of the law."

"Back in March, in an effort to demonstrate access to public records, the Roanoke Times printed the names and addresses of every concealed weapons permit holder in Virginia. Now a new proposal would keep the public from using the Freedom of Information Act to access identifying information about permit holders."

"'A lot of the folks who were upset had gotten the permit to protect themselves from a stalker, from an ex-boyfriend, or girlfriend that was violent towards them,' says Delegate Morgan Griffith. The last thing they wanted was their gun carry status and address printed for everyone to see.
