"Probably the best thing about writing a column is hearing from readers, whether they love me or hate me." ...

"But then, believe it or not, sometimes there are correspondents who actually agree with what I wrote in the first place. One such reader is Gregg Jarrette, a former Will County sheriff's police officer who now runs a private security company. One of his concerns is the Second Amendment. He strongly believes lawful citizens have the right, perhaps even the obligation, to own a gun for self-defense." ...

"American citizens simply cannot count on the police to protect them from assault. Almost always, the only thing the police can do is show up after the fact and sort things out. Laws are not written to prevent crime; they are written to give society the means to punish the criminal after he has committed his misdeed."

"In short, when crunch time comes, you are on your own. And if you really want to improve your odds of surviving an encounter with a felon, you've got to have a handgun handy." ...

... "Another example is the tragic choice made by the City of San Francisco overnight, the decision to ban guns from the territory."

"From The San Francisco Chronicle," ...

"Only two other cities in the country -- Washington, D.C., and Chicago -- have similar bans."

"Brilliant."

"D.C. is the murder Capitol of the country and Chicago’s not so far behind. Great models."

"Gun owners knew the lessons of New Orleans generations before the levees broke. We know very well the fate of San Francisco now, too, as there is positively no provision for confiscating weapons from the bad guys, only from the good guys. It’s a pity that voters there don’t view themselves as good guys and bad guys as bad guys. To them, conservatives are the bad guys." ...

"A home on the range motivated some gun enthusiasts to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a one-acre lot at the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. Now 6 years later, the promised parcels remain as desolate as they day they were secured. Prompting a class action lawsuit against the organization and its president."

"The Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, near Pahrump, boasts some 4,000 members."

"These are people who've paid anywhere from $100,000 to $1,200 for a lifetime of self-defense training. Memberships purchased early on were marketed as investments, but now some are finding their sure-fire deal has missed its mark." ...

"'The people have spoken in Virginia and New Jersey, and they have elected candidates who have stuck to reasonable positions when it comes to sensible gun policies.'"

"'America's news media should pay heed: arch-conservative, guns above all else positions have been shown to be a losing recipe. Jerry Kilgore, in Virginia, said he wanted guns in bars and no limits on gun traffickers. In New Jersey, Doug Forrester reversed his earlier pro-gun lobby positioning, but the people of New Jersey were wary nevertheless.'" ...

"Jerry Kilgore called for allowing loaded guns in bars a week out from Virginia's gubernatorial race. Doug Forrester spent his entire campaign for Governor of New Jersey avoiding the NRA-friendly positions he took in earlier political campaigns."

"And in San Francisco, a referendum to outlaw handguns passed by a spectacular margin with pennies spent marketing it. The Brady Campaign took no position on the ban, but the broad margin of victory on the referendum (some 58 percent supported it) speaks volumes about the desire of urban residents to do something about the gun violence plaguing American cities."

"In a nutshell, Election Day 2005 was a positive one for supporters of sensible gun laws." ...

"It appears Channel 19 removed its deliriously distraught commercial for the Couple thousand or so Mommy March yesterday. I wonder if it was due to poor journalism... I guess we'll never know."

"However, not to be outdone by the histrionics of Elizabeth Donatelli of Channel 19, Kate Andrews of the Daily Progress has written an infomercial of her own, posing as a 'news' story."

"Maybe you'll recognize the MO... Somber, descriptive, moody opening describing the lonely sight of 81 shirts flapping in the wind, symbolizing 81 young lives lost to guns (notice, not armed criminals or lack of personal responsibility). Same flawed statistics quoted from the mouths of distraught mothers whose only source is the Brady Center's propaganda. ..." ...

York County prosecutors have dropped charges against a 51-year-old woman accused of shooting a man she said attacked her.

Linda Diane Nelson was accused of shooting and killing 57-year-old James Jackson Massey on June 5th. York County Public Defender Harry Dest says his client acted in self-defense and had bruises on her legs and face from her encounter with Massey.

Julia Patterson-Massey says her common-law husband had a history of alcoholism and depression but that she had never seen him act violently. She says her husband had just returned to the area in hopes of reconciling with Nelson, who was described as Massey's long-time friend and drinking buddy.

The measure passed overwhelmingly--58 percent to 42 percent according to the Associated Press--in a referendum held yesterday. The measure bans the manufacture and sale of all firearms and ammunition as well as the private possession of handguns."

"Josh Sugarmann, VPC executive director and author of the 2000 book 'Every Handgun is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns,' states, 'San Francisco voters recognize the clear link between handgun availability and increased murder and suicide rates. Fewer handguns mean fewer deaths and increased public safety.'" ...

It is unknown at this time whether the student was under the influence of mood-altering drugs such as Ritalin, Provax, or Paxil. Also unknown is the motive."

Police are investigating after the possible sighting of an armed man led to the lock down of a Washington County school Wednesday afternoon.

Three fifth grade girls reported seeing a man wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt walk into the Fort Edward School. One of the girls thought the man had a pistol.

The threat was deemed credible and the school was locked down.

Classes had already been dismissed for the day. However, there were still about 80 kids in the school for various after school activities. They were not allowed to leave.

Police searched the building and found nothing. They are now reviewing surveillance video.

"The gun industry would be protected from civil lawsuits in Wisconsin under legislation the state Senate approved Wednesday."

"Also on Tuesday, a committee approved the bill, which now goes to the full Assembly for a vote."
