... "What chance would a 66-year old grandmother have against a bigger, stronger, man a third of her age? What chance would a 60-year old man have against two men, armed and in their 20’s? And what chance would a 65-year old have against a man half his age? Without an equalizer, ,these individuals would have no chance. Because that equalizer was a firearm, all three are alive today."

"Americans over the age of 65 are now the most likely age group to be armed, according to the General Social Survey, part of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. The reasons for this are almost as varied as the individuals who make up that demographic. ..." ...

"I'm not an NRA member or gun enthusiast. I have never owned a gun and probably never will. But I voted against San Francisco's Proposition H. As a civil-rights attorney, I am alarmed by people's increasing willingness to give up other people's rights. This tendency is at the root of the country's post-Sept. 11 lurch toward fascism, epitomized in Patriot Act provisions that gut First, Fourth, Fifth and 14th Amendment rights, authorizing government intrusions into people's homes and private lives as never before, all in the name of security."

"Government officials assure us that they only use these awesome powers against the 'bad guys,' ignoring the fundamental principle that bad guys have rights, too, including not being presumed to be bad guys, until proven so in court. ..." ...

... "Because of the deceptive shroud of politics, what will likely not be included in the dialogue of violence, be it school or hunting, is the issue of masculinity in today's world."

"As Jackson Katz argued in his breakthrough film Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity, the proliferation of school violence has everything to do with the United States' volatile construction of masculinity and peripherally with things such as violent films, music, TV and video games." ...

"'To put somebody into a school bus where they can be beaten, where they can be attacked, where they can be constantly harassed, and not have an adult on that school bus other than the driver, who is not there to pay attention to what's going on -- it's like putting a person in a prison cell. She was beaten. She was harassed. And, sadly, at least what is alleged, is that she took an extreme measure to defend herself -- but to defend herself,' Lehr said. ...'"

"When police arrested Juan Quinones in 2002, the handgun they accused him of carrying had its serial number scratched out."

"State law said merely possessing such a gun was enough evidence to also charge Quinones with being the person who scratched it out."

"But a recent ruling by the Appellate Court of Illinois said that law is unconstitutional -- which could open the door to reversals for others convicted of the crime."

"Though the state law was amended last year, the court said those convicted under the old language were convicted against the presumption of innocence granted to anyone arrested for a crime." ...

Police spokesman Les Sylven said the detachment deployed its emergency response team around 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a man brandishing a firearm on the balcony of a Tyee Road apartment building.

"(Replicas) get the same amount of attention as if they were a real firearm," Sylven said. "On average we get two or three of these calls a month."

The teen was home with a friend when the incident occurred. His mother arrived while police were still on the scene.

"George Clement Jr.'s bison hunt ended only minutes after it started early Tuesday morning when he killed a bull just northeast of here. But the controversy over what took place will likely swirl for some time if hunt opponents have their way."

"On the opening day of a first-of-its-kind hunt, Clement was the first hunter to shoot a Yellowstone National Park bison that wandered outside the park's northern boundary. Another was shot on private land in the West Yellowstone area by an unidentified hunter. Montana hasn't held a bison hunt since 1990. Under the state's bison management plan, the animals aren't allowed to wander freely for fear they may spread brucellosis to cattle. The disease can cause cattle to abort." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
What is ominous is the ease with which some people go from saying that they don't like something to saying that the government should forbid it. When you go down that road, don't expect freedom to survive very long. — Thomas Sowell
