Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of United States v. Rahimi.
Zackey Rahimi is a known domestic abuser. He was issued a restraining order in 2020 after assaulting his live-in girlfriend outside their apartment, discharging a gun in the process. During a legal search unrelated to his history as an abuser, police discovered that Rahimi possessed several firearms, contrary to federal law for those subject to restraining orders or convicted of domestic assault.
Rahimi, however, sees himself as a victim. He sued the federal government, arguing that, despite his documented history of violence against women and reckless use of firearms, he should be able to own as many guns as he wants. |

The D.C. Court of Appeals reversed a man’s conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm, which he received because he did not immediately drop his weapon after defending himself against drive-by shooters: “One who obtains a firearm only because of a need for self-defense cannot reasonably be expected to drop it like a hot potato the moment they recognize that the threat on their life has ceased, nor would it be socially desirable to incentivize them to do.” |

Of course, this was when the United States was expanding its footprint towards the left coast and six-shooters, double barrel shotguns, and lever-actions helped tame the west—lever-actions, we remind you, without the ridiculous MLOK rails and tactical lights. Cowboy culture required daily carry of a fixed blade for everything from self-defense to true fieldcraft and the lure of that culture made its way to the highest office of the land during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. Teddy had knives for both show and for function and often posed with his fancier pieces like his famous buckskin photo. |

The Supreme Court heard the case USA v. Rahimi on Nov. 7 concerning whether perpetrators of domestic abuse should lose their second amendment right to possess firearms. Their decision, expected this June, will hopefully undo the expansion of gun rights they created last year in ruling on New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority decision in Bruen which overturned a decades-old standard requiring courts to balance individual rights to bear arms with public safety risks. |

A Shelby County Circuit Court judge on Thursday granted Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant an immunity hearing in his civil case stemming from allegations he punched a teenage basketball player at his home in July 2022.
Attorneys for Morant have argued that the punch was in self defense, and filed a motion to dismiss citing that argument. But Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney ruled the motion to dismiss was instead a motion for an immunity hearing.
The statute cited by Morant's attorneys has been challenged by the teen's attorney, Rebecca Adelman, who argues it only applies when criminal conduct is entwined with a civil proceeding. Morant has not been charged criminally. |

A Kirbyville man was shot and killed in Lumberton shortly before 8:00 Wednesday night, and police there say it was a case of self-defense after he pulled a gun on another man. It happened in front of Papa John’s Pizza on Highway 96.
According to Police Chief Danny Sullins, 51-year-old Waylon Mark Palmore was shot and killed by the son of the man who he pulled a gun on. Chief Sullins says the son has cooperated with the investigation and no charges have been filed.
Neither the father nor the son have been identified. |

A largely symbolic resolution that would have had Otsego County declare itself a “constitutional county” and encourage the sheriff and prosecuting attorney not to enforce laws that infringe on Second Amendment rights failed to gain enough support from the county board of commissioners on Tuesday.
The resolution failed as six commissioners, including Trevor Burroughs, Jason Clement, Terra Deming, county board chairman Doug Johnson, Brett McVannel, and Kyle Yohe, voted against the measure. Commissioners Henry Mason, Jonathan Turnbull and Dana Wingo voted in favor. |

In a ruling that seems fated to find its way before the U.S. Supreme Court, a judge in Illinois has recently found that the gun rights of a felon convicted of multiple armed robberies are protected by the Second Amendment.
The finding from U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman was issued on Nov. 2 and stems from a case involving Illinois resident Glen Price. Price, 37, allegedly brandished a gun and robbed someone on a train in September 2021. Police said he stole a cellphone and a train fare card too. When police arrested him, they found a 9 mm gun in his possession, cocaine, ammunition and a stolen credit card. |

We're No. 19: Florida ranks in the top third of states when it comes to the strength its gun laws. The ranking might have been higher, had Republicans in the state capital not spent the years following the tragic 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland undermining a fairly good law that raised the age requirement to buy firearms and allowed local law enforcement to seek a judge's order to take away firearms from troubled individuals.

When author and podcaster Michael Malice says "conservatism is progressivism driving the speed limit," I agree. The values and policies most conservatives espouse are simply the Left’s position from a couple of decades earlier.
Guns are a notable exception; conservatives have made massive gains on the Second Amendment front, at the state level, and at the Supreme Court, and now nearly half the country can legally defend their families without a permission slip from the government. The battles to rein in spending, balance the budget, protect the unborn, reform entitlements, and influence the culture have not fared nearly as well in recent years. |

"With all the gun violence that we have I think it would be beneficial for all the courts to have a way of looking things up," he said.
Hanson said it may be time to look at the law again.
"I do think that it's probably worth a discussion with policymakers on the state level," Hanson said. "Do we need to take a second look at the three day time period for issuance of the handgun purchase permit? Should we allow for additional time and not have to deny someone simply because we don't have the final answer? I think that would make more sense."

The panel deliberated about five hours over two days before bringing in the not guilty verdicts Thursday morning. A Florida homeowner shot a would-be intruder dead outside his home on Thursday after the intruder attempted to break in, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight in Volusia County, according to the Port Orange Police Department.

On Wednesday, a federal judge sentenced Deja Taylor, a 26-year-old Virginia woman whose 6-year-old son used her pistol to shoot a teacher last January, to 21 months in prison for owning a gun while using marijuana. In June, Taylor pleaded guilty to violating 18 USC 922(g)(3), which makes it a felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, for an "unlawful user" of a "controlled substance" to possess a firearm. She also admitted that she falsely denied drug use on the form she filled out when she bought the pistol, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. |
