"In an effort to rebut the idea that allowing law-abiding Americans to carry handguns in public helps prevent crime, the Violence Policy Center has begun compiling a list of homicides committed by people with carry permits. ..." ...

"Let's say there are a total of 5 million permit holders in the U.S. (a conservative estimate), and let's say the actual number of homicides is 150, or twice the VPC's count. That's roughly 75 a year, or 0.00002 homicide per permit holder."

"If you divide the total number of gun homicides in 2006 (12,800) by the entire adult population of the U.S., you get 0.00006, which suggests that permit holders commit homicide at a rate far below average ..." ...

Gun Control: Will 2010 keep the K in Kalifornia?

"Independence has a meaning which has been lost on many Americans. It is at the core of why Kalifornia is going bankrupt: lack of Independence from our public servants. Demagoguery – and other official Potomac Fever endeavors to do too many things for the people, things which many of us knew should not have been done – is the official's stock in trade. This fever compels greater dependency on government by way of excluding citizens from working things out for themselves. When they go against our wishes and better judgment, they take on a dictatorial cast to them, an all too familiar cast if you think of some recent European history." ...

"In Florida, some adoption agencies include the question 'do you own a gun?' on their adoption application paperwork. The implication that gun owners might be considered to be unfit parents have many people concerned."
"'This is almost a profiling of adoptive parents,' said Marion Hammer, NRA Board member and Tallahassee gun rights lobbyist. 'They don't want to be profiled, they don't want to be treated differently because they choose to exercise a constitutional right.'" ...

"Speaking of [CSGV head] Horwitz and messages, Josh has recently asked what the message is behind the massive, sustained spike in firearm and ammunition sales over the past year (plus)." ...

"You want the short version of the message, Josh?"

"Step away from oppressive gun laws; acknowledge that when the government ignores the Constitution, that government abandons any claim to the citizens' loyalty, and resistance to said government can no longer be characterized as treason; know that we will not disarm."

"That's the message, Josh ..." ...

"Anti-Second Amendment zealots wasted little time in exploiting the massacre of 13 people at Fort Hood by a gun-wielding loon. But there was also an array of sober, sane responses to the shooting as well -- responses that offered solutions, not ideologic diatribes, responses that say freedom, not repression, is the always the best answer."

"Among them, the Washington Times in this Nov. 11 editorial:"

"'Time after time, public murder sprees occur in 'gun-free zones' - public places where citizens are not legally able to carry guns ...'" ...

"The Seventh Circuit last week vacated a man's conviction for possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence."

"However, the court did not strike the statute down as unconstitutional, but remanded the case to the district court to give the government the opportunity to 'establish a reasonable fit' between the 'statute's means and its end.'"

"Addressing the record made before the district court, Judge Diane S. Sykes wrote for the court, 'The government … has premised its argument almost entirely on Heller's reference to the presumptive validity of felon-dispossession laws and reasoned by analogy that sec. 922(g)(9) therefore passes constitutional muster. That's not enough.'" ...

"I do not know how many of you folks have seen the five-minute video put out recently by the National Shooting Sports Foundation but it is really great. It addresses the fact that many excellent sporting rifles were developed from military rifles of their time and the difference between a modern assault rifle and a modern, semi-automatic sporting rifle."

"It is a fact that the either totally ignorant or Second Amendment subversives in the television news media refer to just about anything that goes bang as an assault weapon. Well folks let’s turn back the clock look back to the Spanish American War and Theodore Roosevelt." ...

"A critically wounded Virginia Tech student started turning his personal experience into a campaign for the public good this past summer. By buying a small arsenal of assault weapons and handguns with cash at gun shows without Brady background checks - and with a hidden camera recording the transactions - Colin Goddard wanted to document how easy and unchecked it all was. His goal: to get Congress to close the loophole that allows many dangerous people to purchase dangerous weapons at gun shows without a Brady background check." ...

"Just how much clout does the gun lobby have on Capitol Hill? This week may prove to be a crucial test: A House-Senate conference committee is about to take up a massive transportation-funding bill that is pitting advocates of gun rights against security-minded members worried about the threat of terrorist attacks on Amtrak trains. ..." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: It's hard to believe that this could have been written in a more biased fashion. It's a left wing editorial masquerading as "investigative reporting". The bill is not pitting gun rights members against "security-minded" members at all, it's pitting gun rights members against gun prohibitionist members.

In the Bay area, David Julian, 27, and others are hanging out at a Cupertino Starbucks, sipping their Venti coffees with guns holstered to their hips."

"Sadly the lesson must continue as we talk about how the media looks at issues with bias and distortion. One must conclude they are quite lazy, as they don't do their homework and seem quite willing to accept anything spoon-fed to them that fits their liberal mental template without critical thought. In the process they miss the facts, pass on the fabricated material, and thus do the public a great general disservice."

A liquor store clerk shot and killed a masked gunman who tried to rob him Tuesday night, according to Wilmington police.

Two gunmen came into Favor's Liquor Store on S. Walnut Street around 9:30 p.m. and ordered the clerk to give them the money in the register.

When the gunmen came around the counter to try to get the money themselves, the clerk opened fire, hitting one of the masked men, police said.

The man who was shot staggered out of the store and collapsed on the sidewalk. He died at the hospital. Police were using dogs to try to track down the second gunman, who fled.

Those are the opening words of an essay by former prosecutor Val Van Brocklin in the 'training' section of Officer.com.
