"For the first time in United States history, the Supreme Court will hear a case that should, once and for all, decide the meaning of the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights, and the Second Amendment Foundation could not be happier."
"'We are confident that the high court will rule that the Second Amendment affirms and protects an individual civil right to keep and bear arms,' said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb. 'Previous Supreme Court rulings dating back more than a century have consistently referred to the Second Amendment as protective of an individual right, but the case of District of Columbia v. Heller focuses on that issue, and we expect the court to settle the issue once and for all.'" ... |

"Bremer was released from a federal prison this month, after serving 35 years. ... The episode still highlights the value of taking precautions to prevent people who show signs of mental illness from buying firearms. No such precautions were taken in Bremer's case."

"Gun control has been a simmering, back-burner issue in American politics for years -- deeply important to relatively small few on either end of the question but not an animating concern for many voters."
"Polls show gun policy ranks low on the list voter concerns -- 15th in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll taken in May-- in part because law and policy changes have been incremental and a certain dynamic has held as local gun laws have tended to mollify all but the most engaged and mainstream Democrats and Republicans have staked out moderate, compromise positions for and against tough restrictions on gun ownership." ... |

"In what is expected to be a decision that will have significant political impact in an election year, the Supreme Court announced on November 20th that it would hear an appeal by the District of Columbia to the striking down of its ban on handguns."
"The announcement represents the potential, given that there are four Federalist Society pro-NRA justices on the Court ... that for the first time in United States history the Supreme Court may declare an individual – as distinct from collective right – to own firearms."

"For years my colleagues and I have debated this issue and asked ourselves the following question: Did we really want the Supreme Court to consider the meaning of the Second Amendment. The answer was yes, but no. We had a qualifier. 'No, not at this time.' It was a response to, first, knowing that a court case can go either way -- there is no such thing as a slam dunk; and second, worrying about the composition of the Court. There has never been a day that I felt, given the facts, that a thinking court would disagree with the words the Framers put on parchment. I want to believe the high court will confirm what many Americans know the Framers intended, that their words meant something. That an individual right means just that ..." ... |

Rudy Giuliani was the first campaign to react to the Supreme Court's decision today to hear the challenge to D.C.'s handgun ban.
The former New York mayor said the justices should side with the lower court ruling that struck down part of the D.C. law.
"I strongly believe that Judge Silberman's decision deserves to be upheld by the Supreme Court. The Parker decision is an excellent example of a judge looking to find the meaning of the words in the Constitution, not what he would like them to mean," Giuliani said.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out for Giuliani, who as mayor frequently found himself joining with the gun control advocates he now is opposing. |
