CCRKBA Says Fairfax County Officials 'All Wet' on Proposed Gun Restrictions

"Officials in Fairfax County, VA, including the county police chief, are 'all wet' with their proposals to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens because of a horrible crime committed earlier this year by a mentally ill 18-year-old who could never legally qualify to carry a firearm in Virginia or anywhere else, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today."

"CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron said the proposed restrictions have been on the wish list of Old Dominion anti- gunners long before the May 8 shooting rampage at the Sully district police station. Gunman Michael Kennedy was killed, but not before he murdered Detective Vicky O. Armel and fatally wounded Officer Michael E. Garbarino." ...

A Parting Shot From George Allen

"As a last little gift to America, Senator George Allen, who was narrowly defeated by James Webb this month, has introduced what may be his final piece of legislation: a bill that would allow the carrying of concealed weapons in national parks. The argument behind the bill is that national park regulations unfairly strip many Americans of a right they may enjoy outside the parks. The bill has passed to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where we hope it will die the miserable death it deserves."

"America’s confusion about the Second Amendment is now nearly total. An amendment that ensures a collective right to bear arms has been misread ... as a law guaranteeing an individual’s right to carry a weapon in public." ...

"You won’t be shocked to learn what the New York Times thinks of laws allowing citizens to carry their guns in public."

"As a last little gift to America, Senator George Allen ... has introduced what may be his final piece of legislation: a bill that would allow the carrying of concealed weapons in national parks. ... we hope it will die the miserable death it deserves." ...

"What's funny about that last bit is that the Constitution didn’t originally contain any language granting a universal right to vote. Originally only white, male landowners were allowed to vote. That has changed for the better since the days of this country's founding, but what hasn’t changed in the bill of rights is the 2nd amendment ..." ...

Macklin: Second Amendment rights

FULL TEXT BELOW:

In response to a previous letter, it is true, the Second Amendment does not give any individual rights. In fact, none of the amendments known as the Bill of Rights give anybody any rights. The Bill of Rights is the written guarantee that the government will not infringe on the rights the people hold by virtue of being alive.

To see what may be the best authoritative report on the history and purpose of the Second Amendment, the U.S. Department of Justice Report is available on-line at http://www.usdoj.gov/olc/secondamendment2.htm.

"Nothing says Christmas quite like a glittery black handgun hanging from the tree."

"Urban Outfitters Inc. - no stranger to controversial products - is offering the 5-inch-long, Chinese-made gun ornament for $6 in its stores and catalogs this year."

"'Bust a cap in your tree with this superglittery ornament in the shape of a handgun, complete with a satin ribbon for hanging,' the online description of the revolver says. It is meant, the retailer says, as an 'ironic twist' on the holidays."

"'Twisted' is more like it, said Kate Philips, [PA] Gov. Rendell's spokeswoman. 'The governor doesn't find it humorous or clever to display weapons that are responsible for taking hundreds of lives each year as if they are decorations,' she said." ...

KABA Note: Once again the antis ignore the hundreds of thousands of lives saved by guns every year.

"Many of the world's mature democracies require every high-school graduate to serve a year or two of either military or nonprofit service, as Congressman Charlie Rangel has proposed every year for some time now. At first blush, this may seem like an oppression by government, but history shows it's actually one of the best ways to prevent a military from becoming its own insular and dangerous subculture ..." ...

"But while many Founders saw a standing army as a threat to democracy, others pointed to threats ranging from hostile Indians to French Canadians ... as reasons to keep it."

"On Tuesday morning, November 21, Columbus awoke to the news that the president of Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, Kevin Miles, had been attacked near his home on Sunday morning by a bat wielding assailant."

"The Columbus Dispatch reported that the attack was stopped when Miles 'had to draw his handgun to stop a man from beating him'. Other news media, however, omitted Miles' defensive use of a handgun from their reports." ...

"When the TV news stations were called for comment, WBNS 10 reporter Angela An explained that an editorial decision had been made by the producer to omit the defensive handgun use portion of the story. She explained that it was not worth mentioning because defensive handgun use is so common in Columbus and that anyone could verify this by 'asking any police officer'." [emphasis added] ...

"Those that do not regularly listen to the excellent programs that air on NRANews.com or keep their radar tuned to self-defense stories are probably not aware of what recently happened to Lumpy Lambert. That is because armed citizen accounts rarely make it to print. When they do, the vast majority of them report that, 'Mrs. Smith is lucky to be alive' rather than 'Mrs. Smith used her legal firearm for self-defense. If she hadn't, she would now be dead.' Official FBI statistics predict that a firearm is used 1.5 million times a year in self-defense. Do you hear about all of those in the news? I certainly do not." ...

"A Mississippi mayor has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor weapons charges after carrying a handgun on church and school property, and a gun rights group thinks now would be a good time for him to step down from Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG)."

"Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, a Democrat, pleaded guilty Nov. 15 to the misdemeanors to avoid felony charges that would have cost him his job. Instead of jail time, he was fined $1,500 and put on a year's probation."

"Lawrence Keane, director of the gun rights lobbying group National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), on Tuesday called Melton a 'hypocrite' for violating gun laws while maintaining membership in MAIG." ...

"Mayor Bloomberg has no intention of booting the mayor of Jackson, Miss., from his national coalition of mayors against illegal guns, even though the Southern official pleaded guilty to weapons charges last week."

"Mayor Frank Melton pleaded no contest on Nov. 15 to three misdemeanor charges: carrying a gun in a park and in a church, and carrying a concealed weapon. He agreed to a six-month suspended sentence and $1,500 in fines."

"Despite the transgression, Bloomberg continues to welcome Melton as one of the 120 mayors from across the country who joined his coalition, Mayors Against Illegal Guns."

"One of the members of Mayor Bloomberg's anti-gun coalition has pleaded to charges of illegally carrying a gun into a church, onto a college campus, and into a park."

"The mayor of Jackson, Miss., Frank Melton, is one of more than 100 mayors in the coalition Mr. Bloomberg and the mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, created to push for stronger gun control laws."

"But, last week, Mr. Melton — who according to news reports, carries firearms at all times and has a reputation for being tough on crime — pleaded no contest to carrying a concealed gun on the campus of a Mississippi College School of Law. He also pleaded guilty to carrying a gun into a church and into a park, also illegal under state law. The first was reduced from a felony charge to a misdemeanor; the latter two were misdemeanors." ...

"Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters had little choice in deciding not to file charges in three recent deaths labeled self-defense, say legal experts."

"Deters summed it up this way: 'Prosecutors have an ethical duty. We have to believe in the likelihood and the probability of success at trial before we try anybody.'"

"Because successful prosecution was unlikely, legal experts said Deters had little choice, including in his decision Tuesday to not file charges against 50-year-old Anthony Stone in the death of Tyree Henderson, 30, of Fairborn, Ohio. Henderson was run over and killed Nov. 30 after he tried to rob Stone and a passenger in Stone's car at gunpoint." ...

"Rep. Curt Oda has got part of the answer. The Clearfield Republican says that the fees from permits to carry concealed guns in Utah should go directly to the Bureau of Criminal Identification rather than to the general fund."

"He's right that the program should pay for itself, eliminating the budget shortage of the BCI. But the Legislature should remain in the appropriations process to maintain oversight; it should allocate the money back to BCI from the general fund. In addition, lawmakers should increase the fees, especially for non-Utahns." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787)
