Indiana is generally considered a firearm friendly state and often postures its laws around the country's Second Amendment.
Among the more recent moves, in 2022, the state passed its version of a "constitutional carry" law, eliminating the license requirement to carry a handgun in Indiana for those otherwise legally allowed.
But other laws tied to how firearms are used to protect life and property date much farther back.
Here’s what we know about Indiana’s self-defense, castle doctrine and stand your ground laws. |

Should people who are drunk have the right to keep a loaded gun in their car for self-defense? That’s the question before the Kansas Supreme Court in a case that is likely to shape future legislation about gun rights in the Sunflower State. The state’s high court appears skeptical of a Sedgwick County judge’s reasoning for striking down a state gun law as unconstitutional. But the justices may ultimately reach the same conclusion. |

Oregon Supreme Court justices Thursday raised questions about the appropriate legal standard and historical principles they need to consider when determining if new regulations under the voter-approved gun control Measure 114 adhere to the state constitution.
The measure limits gun magazine capacity to 10 or fewer rounds, requires a permit to buy a gun and closes what’s called the Charleston Loophole, which requires the completion, not just initiation, of a background check before someone can transfer a firearm. |

New evidence has emerged in a deadly shooting that occurred Halloween night near Murfreesboro.
Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes said the new evidence has led to murder charges being dropped against a Conway man who apparently acted in self-defense.
Hayes said that based on the initial investigation conducted shortly after the shooting, 34-year-old Rumeal Kwamine Daye was identified as the main suspect. That led investigators to initially charge him with first degree murder. |

“I think it’s going to be a tough case either way,” said Massillamany.
“There’s no real clear-cut winner on this. It’s almost like a law school exam question. It’s designed to have ambiguity,” said Villanueva.
As for a timeline, the prosecutor said no decision will be made until next week at the earliest. It’s also possible the case could be sent to a grand jury to decide.
Prominent Second Amendment Attorney Guy Relford confirms he has been hired to represent the homeowner. Relford would not make any comment about the case so far. |

The Marshall County Commissioners may soon revisit a proposal to designate the county a “Second Amendment sanctuary.” Generally, governments declaring themselves “Second Amendment sanctuaries” say they won’t enforce gun-related laws they believe to be unconstitutional.
Resident Don Nunemaker brought the proposal to the county commissioners Monday. He felt that gun laws currently in place across the country do little to improve security.
"Most gun owners I know are pretty ethical, and they wouldn’t do anything ‘illegal,’ if you will," Nunemaker told the commissioners. "The people we need to worry about are criminals." |

The Oregon Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Nov. 6 about whether Measure 114, a gun control measure, violates the Oregon Constitution, with justices questioning the reality of implementing the law and whether historical facts about firearms should apply to their consideration.
Tony Aiello Jr. represented two gun owners who challenged the gun control measure shortly after its passage by Oregon voters in 2022 and had petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn a March ruling that deemed it constitutional. The three-judge panel from the Oregon Court of Appeals reversed a 2023 ruling from Harney County Circuit Court Judge Robert Raschio, who found the law unconstitutional. |

Speaker Johnson understands how badly the New York City mayor-elect can harm our civil rights, especially our Second Amendment rights.
The mainstream media looks at Mamdani with damn-near lust in their eyes. He’s 34, good-looking, well spoken, Muslim and even more leftist than the reporters who cover his every single word. |

For four years, the ministry has been transforming hundreds of weapons into tools that nurture life, offering a unique path from violence to healing.
"As you're transforming the shape, you can think about the intentions of healing, and transforming the energy from violence to healing," said a participant in the program. |

“If guns didn’t exist, yes,” said Ra-Twoine Fields. “But we live in America, where there are more guns than people. So no, there is no public safety without guns. What we can do is learn how to manage it, how to live with it responsibly.”
Fields, a firearms instructor, armed security guard, and PhD student at Saybrook University, doesn’t say this for shock value. He says it because it’s the starting point of his life’s work: teaching young people not to fear the reality they live in, but to survive it safely. |

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County on Thursday launched a new digital platform designed to automate the reporting of failures to relinquish firearms by individuals under domestic violence restraining orders.
The system is designed to automatically alert law enforcement agencies when the subject of a restraining order or other court injunction fails to surrender their firearms, firearm parts or ammunition. The change replaces a manual, multistep process that, officials said, previously slowed cross-agency communication and response. |

Ever since September 25th, Floridians are free to openly carry firearms, but this new move brought concerns about inconsistencies with the state’s current gun laws.
“The question going forward is, what do we do in lieu of the court ruling?” said House Representative Sam Garrison, (R-Fleming Island).
Back in September, the First District Court of Appeals struck down the state’s open carry ban. That law originally worked in tandem with Florida statute that governs the carrying of concealed weapons. |

The system automatically notifies the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the LAPD and the 86 other law enforcement agencies in the county when a firearm relinquishment restraining order violation is determined.
Court officials say the system boosts public safety and enhances efficiency, communication and coordination among all the various agencies. |

The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday questioned whether the historical presence of guns in the state could usurp the public safety concerns justifying a voter-approved law that prevents sale or transfer of magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
The hearing marked the culmination of arguments over Measure 114, which a narrow majority of Oregon voters approved in 2022. Advocates from both sides of the ongoing fight to implement one of the nation’s most stringent gun control provisions filled the courtroom in Salem. |
