"Restrictive firearm legislation has failed to reduce gun violence in Australia, Canada, or Great Britain. The policy of confiscating guns has been an expensive failure, according to a new paper, The Failed Experiment: Gun Control and Public Safety in Canada, Australia, England and Wales, released today by The Fraser Institute."

" 'What makes gun control so compelling for many is the belief that violent crime is driven by the availability of guns, and more importantly, that criminal violence in general may be reduced by limiting access to firearms,' says Gary Mauser, author of the paper and professor of business at Simon Fraser University."

The "Good" News, The Bad News and The Truth About Concealed Carry Permits

"You've heard the 'good' news about concealed carry permits."

"A majority of U.S. states have adopted 'shall-issue' permits to carry firearms. All you have to do is take a training course, pay a fee, pose for a photograph, give your fingerprints, and let yourself be entered in a government database. After that, if you don't have a criminal record or a history of mental illness, the government may allow you to carry a tool to defend your life."

"And concealed carry of firearms works! Violent crime has been curbed in places where criminals can't guess who's armed." ...

"You've also heard the bad news about concealed carry permits. Consider the following two examples."

"A traffic cop stops you for going five miles per hour over the speed limit. To your shock, when he comes to your car window, he not only asks for your drivers license and registration—but orders you to hand over your firearm! He knows you carry, because the data terminal in his squad car told him so. Never mind that your concealed carry permit application was supposed to prove you're a good citizen; your gun is considered a threat to all law-enforcement officers, despite your good character. The policeman keeps your firearm until he's ready to let you go— and maybe even longer."

"You're peacefully carrying a picket sign on a public street. You're not raising a ruckus. You're not even 'anti-anything.' In fact, you're demonstrating in support of American involvement in Iraq. Nevertheless, a police officer singles you out and demands to search your backpack. You protest; there's no justification for the search. But eventually you're intimidated into allowing the officer to paw through your belongings. Later you learn that the only 'probable cause' for the search was the fact that you once applied for a concealed carry permit. The information was in a criminal database. You, the law-abiding permit applicant are in a criminal database. You also learn the database has been hacked and information about you and your gun ownership might have been stolen."

Gussying Up the Gun Show Lie

"What do you do if everything you stand for is a lie, and that gets found out? Anti-gun organizations often just rename themselves, and declare they’re mainstream. They appear reasonable, and use cheery language. They choose one target – say, gun show loophole – and hint that fixing that one problem would by golly, fix America. Trouble is, the gun show loophole is a gussied-up lie. It doesn’t exist. So just why would anti-gunners go after it so often?" ...

"The so-called Homeland Security Gun Safety Act of 2003, referred earlier this year to the Senate Judiciary Committee, purportedly seeks 'to enhance the security of the Nation by increasing the time allowed to track terrorists during periods of elevated alert …' "

"That sounds commonsensical enough on its face." ...

"It is in the rest of that paragraph that raises red flags for National Rifle Association: '... closing loopholes that have allowed terrorists to acquire firearms, maintaining records of certain handgun transfers during periods of heightened terrorist risk, and for other purposes.' "

"The NRA says the problem lies with Section 2, which says Section 922 of title 18, United States Code, is amended so that sections of the gun law 'shall not apply during any period in which the threat condition under the Homeland Security Advisory system is elevated, high or severe.' Later it stipulates that the changes 'shall remain in effect until the threat condition has been at the lowest level for 180 consecutive days.' "

"The NRA sees the bill as something that is being slipped under the radar. The 'terrorist threat condition' has never been down to its lowest level since 9/11, the Second Amendment group notes."

"HUMAN EVENTS intern and photojournalist Carrie Devorah went to federal government buildings in the District of Columbia and photographed some of the many religious and religiously inspired items in those buildings. In addition, she obtained a picture from the White House of the Adams Prayer Mantel. These pictures are a small sampling of the many religious images scattered throughout government buildings in D.C. and around the country."

"Will all of these images eventually be removed by the order of unrestrained federal judges? Will the Alabama state constitution—the current version of which was adopted over 100 years ago, in 1901—have to be revised? More important, will Congress and the President act to restrict federal courts’ jurisdiction over such matters, as the U.S. Constitution explicitly gives them the authority to do, before it is too late?"

"In a precedent-setting case, the IRS wielded new power to punish the political speech of those who 'espouse views' the government considers 'inconsistent' with government-held beliefs. In a hearing originally closed to the public in a secret tribunal on a military island, but moved to a public location after protests from the press and the public, the IRS wants to wield this power against a former IRS whistleblower, who was forced to resign upon his discovery of fraud in the agency. After monitoring and taping the whistleblower's appearances on Sixty Minutes, talk radio shows, and political publications where he rebroadcast his findings of IRS fraud, the IRS initiated this inquisition against their former whistleblower. This new power may find new political targets soon enough."

"Officials at the New Jersey Institute of Technology said efforts to develop a so-called 'smart gun' have taken another step forward after a weapons manufacturer signed on to the production process."

"A Florida-based company intends to design a handgun that would incorporate [the] technology."

"New Jersey was the first state in the country to pass such a law last year when it required the technology to be used in all new handguns sold three years after the state attorney general determines that a smart gun prototype is safe and commercially available."

-------
But the law exempts police officers. Why is that, do you reckon? Could it be that it would hamper them from doing their job - defending against armed criminals? And if so, why should the police be allowed to effectively defend themselves, while the rest of the peons aren't?

It has been a hard fought battle with grass roots support on both sides. On Saturday, those supporting their right to carry handguns rallied in favor of legislation that would allow Ohioans to carry concealed weapons legally."

"This is in accordance with the Law on Firearm Control of 2000, which comes into effect next year."

"However, gun owners will not only have to re-apply, but they will also need to be accredited by training centres - or trained - in order to ensure they are responsible enough to own a weapon."

"According to Jaco Botma, head of the central firearm register, applicants will also have to have police clearance."

"He said people with family violence, drug- or alcohol-related convictions, for example, would not be allowed to own a firearm."

"So far, the army has been ineffective in crushing this menace and herdsmen have little confidence in the national military. This was because herdsmen had complained that government troops had always said they needed food and money before they could intervene; and sometime they had resorted to extortion or outright theft of the rural folk."

"The combined result of all these factors has been that some herdsmen have formed self defence units of 20 men each armed with bows and arrows, which have proved ineffective against automatic weapons."

-------
So the government demands tribute to protect the peasants after disarming them and leaving them at the mercy of thugs. But only cops and the military should have guns, right Sarah?

"After an article I wrote some time ago titled, 'What's Wrong with Patriotism,' it was brought to my attention, by the voluminous feedback I received, that people not only agreed with my thesis; but also, took the argument a step further. A distinction was made between patriotism and nationalism. They are very similar in nature but quite different as well. First of all being a patriot requires serious, analytical, rational thought. A nationalist, on the other hand, throws off the cloak of thought and wraps himself in a brightly-colored flag. He lets someone else do his thinking for him, always destined to be a follower of the leader du jour. A patriot will always question the 'du jour' before he engages an enemy. A patriot does not charge blindly into battle without having become convinced that the cause for battle is a righteous, principled stand."

"Police groups were among the most outspoken critics of the new law while it was being debated in the Legislature."

Israeli customs have seized a shipment of 450 singing, dancing Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein dolls under a law banning incitement, an official said on Wednesday.

The battery-powered Chinese-made figurines were confiscated at the northern port of Haifa, Customs Authority spokeswoman Idit Lev-Zerahiya said.

"On October 23, just two days after 'Defense' Walkers paid a visit to his hometown of Manchester, Senate President Doug White reversed four months of refusals and appointed conferees to a House Bill 12 conference committee. White explained the months of obstruction to the Dayton Daily News at the time, saying he 'delayed appointing conferees because he didn't want his Senate members harassed and pressured by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights advocates for months while behind-the-scenes negotiations continued.' "

"Thankfully, Senator White now seems to be much more willing to hear from individuals and groups of citizens on the public records issue, although he believes the debate 'slows [HB12] down' and prevents the legislature 'from being able to put this to bed very quickly' (which of course is what Gov. Taft has wanted all along)."

"On Wednesday, White told the Associated Press he agrees with Speaker Householder's initial concerns about Taft's latest demand. 'Initially I’m very much opposed' to Gov. Bob Taft’s request that this legislation turn personal information about permit-holders into public records."

"White also seemed to mirror Householder's willingness to compromise on this issue for the good of getting a law."

ELDERLY West Australians should sleep with a can of pepper spray under their pillows and take self-defence lessons from a karate expert, One Nation national director Mr Frank Hough said yesterday.

Mr Hough, an MLC in the WA Parliament, said his proposal would give societys most vulnerable people a “fighting chance” against home invaders.

Mr Hough said the pepper spray should be issued as part of a self-defence kit, which included information on how senior citizens can best protect themselves and their houses against intruders.

The kit would be issued in association with free self-defence lessons “starting from how you open the door, who you open the door to, and how you should lock up”.

“Im not advocating that granny hangs from the chandelier, comes screaming through the air and does a scissor grab around their neck,” Mr Hough said.

A deadly shooting at an eastern Missouri apartment complex was self-defense as the former suspect had insisted, a Franklin County grand jury has ruled.

Witnesses had testified that the one-time suspect, 47, was trying to defend himself Sept. 3 near Gerald when his weapon fired during a scuffle, fatally wounding Jodie Welch Jr., 35.

Welch had moved to the area from Texas and was living in a tent.

Investigators said the argument followed Welch being asked to leave the property. Welch allegedly made threats before leaving, then returned later with several other people. The suspect reportedly fired a warning shot into a tree before the two began fighting.

The suspect alleged he was attacked by Welch, who was shot twice in the chest and in the leg with a .22-caliber rifle.
