"With a quick electronic scan of a fingerprint, gun shop owners in Massachusetts will know immediately if a customer is eligible to buy a weapon, using a system that officials say is the first of its kind in the nation."

"The Massachusetts Instant Record Check System, developed over the past six years with nearly $7 million in information technology grant money, will be in place in all police departments and gun shops across the state by next summer. It is currently operating in three shops and about 140 police departments."

"The system allows police and gun shop owners to have instant access to updated arrest warrant and restraining order information, which was not readily accessible under the old paperwork-intensive system."

VPC: Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need For Effective Assault Weapons Ban—Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle

"SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania."

"Law enforcement weren't able to trace the guns used to kill Jesse, but the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has connected a number of guns used in crimes to flea markets and gun shows."

KABA Note: Would you like to know what that number is? According to the Department of Justice, criminals get their firearms from the following sources:

Purchased from a retail store 8.3%
Purchased at a pawn shop 3.8%
Purchased at a flea market 1.0%
Purchased at a gun show 0.7%
Obtained from friends or family 39.6%
Obtained on the street/illegal source 39.2%

"According to ATF, felons were associated with selling or buying firearms in 46% of the department's gun show investigations."

"In the wake of a deadly shooting in Wisconsin that claimed the lives of six hunters, the gun grabbers have begun their ritual dance in the blood of innocents and “Ban Assault Weapons” chant. Like a band of savage troglodytes, they worship at the altar of tragedy as a means of pushing their odious agenda, while the gun rights advocates scurry to defend what’s left of the Second Amendment."

"Those who feel that people are basically evil and therefore need to be controlled to do what is right, rely on big, powerful and intervening government to ensure a righteous society. Those more spiritually oriented and appreciative of the marvelous gift and experience of life are forgiving of individual foibles and believe in the natural goodness of Man, which is greatly enhanced by individual freedom and responsibility devoid of government force. Such freedom from government results in a powerful desire for peace and goodwill among all in a society."

"The prime purpose behind the writing of the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights was not only to guard against invasion from without, but primarily to guard against the invasion of the people’s liberty from within. When public officials prohibit or obstruct the right to arms held by the people, and interfere with the citizen’s use of arms necessary for the prevention of tyranny in government, that legislation is called sedition."

"The Violence Policy Center, hardly a bastion of credibility on firearms issues, rushed to alarm the public that the SKS rifle allegedly used by Vang can 'expel projectiles at velocities that are capable of penetrating the type of soft body armor typically worn by…law enforcement officers.' ”

"Of course that’s true. Every bullet commonly used in centerfire hunting rifles of all calibers can do that, and the VPC knows it. Soft body armor is primarily designed to stop handgun bullets. ..."

"Besides, this case had nothing to do with the police, and none of the victims was wearing soft body armor. The argument has no relevance."

"The Department of Natural Resources released the preliminary numbers Tuesday and said a number of factors may have contributed to the flat kill total, including poor weather that made it more difficult to track the deer."

"When testing this product during live-fire drills I used an electronic timer and I compared my draw times to my previous draw times when utilizing other thermoplastic holsters that do not have a retention device. What I found is that I was still able to put two well-placed shots on the target from the surrender position in about 1.5 seconds. For those of you that practice that particular drill know the importance of being able to get the gun into action when you only have mere seconds to react. The BlackHawk CQC holsters with the Serpa Lock retention device provide excellent 'Snatch-Proof' security, while at the same time providing flawless, lightening fast deployment, and positive, deliberate re-holstering with no impedance whatsoever."

Fourth letter on the page

"I read the letter from Shirley Conley ('Killing of hunters not surprising,' Nov. 28) regarding the shooting deaths of hunters in Wisconsin and my jaw nearly hit the ground. In her opinion, she states that basically, the hunters got what they deserved for being willing to 'kill Bambi' and because Congress chose not to renew the assault weapons ban. Hunters are not bad people, despite the ways they are often portrayed in television and movies. They are not a beer-swilling, driven-by-bloodlust kind of crowd. They have friends and families, they have jobs, they pay taxes and they love their children with the same zeal that non-hunters do."

"Her logic is brutally twisted and wrong on so many levels I hardly know where to begin! Since she attacks hunting and responsible gun ownership, It would probably be safe to assume that she has a decidedly liberal slant."

"She anthropomorphizes a fictional Disney character by assigning it human emotions and characteristics. Then she wishes guilt and grief upon the survivors of the hunting party. Such hatred for her fellow human beings, despite a differing belief and value system, is beyond appalling."

"A few weeks later, the rifle cost him his job of 23 years."

"That Oct. 1, in a surprise search, Weyerhaeuser Co. sent gun-sniffing dogs into the parking lot of its paper mill here. Mr. Bastible and 11 other workers were fired after guns were found in their vehicles. The timber company said the weapons violated a new company policy that extended a longtime workplace gun ban to the parking area. The fired workers said they knew nothing of the new rule."

"A New York woman who briefly worked as a nanny for Don Imus has sued the radio host for wrongful termination, claiming she was canned for bringing a harmless cap gun and pocketknife with her during a trip last Thanksgiving to the family's sprawling New Mexico ranch. Nichole Mallette, 24, also claimed in her New York State Supreme Court lawsuit, a copy of which you'll find below, that she was defamed when Imus later announced on his program that he had been forced to "disarm" his nanny, whom he labeled as dangerous and a 'terrorist.' In her complaint, filed yesterday by the lawyer who represented the woman who recently accused Bill O'Reilly of various improprieties, Mallette claimed that she brought the cap gun with her so that she and Imus's five-year-old son could 'play cowboys' at the 4000-acre ranch. As for the pocketknife, Mallette noted that the 1-1/2-inch item was never unsheathed from a leather harness affixed to her belt. In her lawsuit, Mallette alleged that she endured 'frenzied questioning' by Imus and his wife Deirdre, who woke her at 1 AM to grill her about the pocketknife and the cap gun, which Mallette said she did not use nor show to Imus's son. ..."

"Deer hunting is the area sport, surpassing all others. ..."

"Hunting with a handgun is legal, but the firearm of choice is the rifle. Only expert shots and hunters use handguns as a handicap in order to introduce a greater challenge to the hunt. Calibers used to hunt deer are limited to those fired in center fire rifles. As most handgun calibers are available in center fire rifles, this does little to limit the choice of handguns, however the barrel length for hunting deer must be at least 5 inches. There is no magazine limitation for hunting rifles or pistols. If a shotgun is to be used, it must be at least 20 gauge, and must be used to fire a single projectile per shot. Buckshot, despite the name, is not legal for hunting deer. Hunters are required to wear at least 50% blaze orange clothing, and a back tag (a little smaller than a license plate) with an identifying number."
