A task force formed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveiled its recommendations this week to reduce gun violence in the state.
The recommendations from the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force range from raising the minimum age to purchase firearms and banning “assault weapons” to building on existing gun control and safety laws.
The task force was created in June 2024 by Whitmer. It followed new gun safety and control laws enacted earlier that year in the wake of the mass shooting at Michigan State University that killed three students and injured five others. |

A Warminster woman, Kristin Leigh Sweigard, is sentenced to 6½ to 13 years in state prison after admitting to illegally purchasing three firearms for her boyfriend, Edward Cordenner III, who was prohibited from gun ownership due to a prior felony. The guns, including a 9mm Taurus pistol and an AR-15 style rifle, were later seized during Cordenner’s arrest outside his ex-girlfriend’s residence, where he was found wearing night-vision goggles.

Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) welcomed reports that the Trump Administration will establish a dedicated Second Amendment rights section within the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice—an action that directly reflects FPC’s top executive-branch recommendation and a priority first proposed by FPC during the previous Trump Administration. The new office is expected to officially ramp up in early December.
