It wasn't that long ago that everyone swore by "the bigger, the better" when it came to shotguns. However, with a few recent introductions, small-bore shotguns are generating a lot of attention from shooters and hunters, who initially dismissed them.

The wide-spread adoption of the metallic cartridge shortly after the close of the American Civil War signaled a massive step forward in firearms technology. Many iconic cartridges emerged during the period between 1865 and 1890, cartridges like the 45 Colt, the 38-40 WCF, and the 44-40 Win, just to name a few.

Who gets credit for this pithy phrase is probably lost to us, but there are no shortages of suggestions. The spirit of the words are more important than the source. Reaching back to World War II and the soldier’s use of the M1 Garand, shooters who dedicated significant range and field use to their selected weapon became adept marksmen with it. Adjustments and fine tuning of an individual’s rifle made them even more accurate. There are fascinating stories of GI’s finding creative ways to sneak their guns back home after the war and use them to hunt on the farm. Over seven decades later, shooters share the same affinity for their weapons.

Sig-Sauer is a juggernaut when it comes to new product introductions, and the P320 XTen is one of several 2022 releases. The XTen isn’t Sig’s first 10mm pistol, but it is their first striker-fired double-stack 10mm. The Sig XTen is an upsized variation of the popular P320 line, most of which are chambered in 9mm. Aside from micro-compact 9mm pistols, one of the hottest segments of the semi-auto handgun market lately has been 10mm pistols. The cartridge that almost went nowhere is now more popular than ever—particularly for backcountry carry.

Anti-gun politicians in Illinois, New Jersey and other so-called “blue” states are in a pre-holiday rush to adopt tougher gun control laws in the aftermath of June’s Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which reinforced Second Amendment protections at a time so many are trying to erode them.

Washington’s Democrat Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson have thrown their weight behind efforts to ban so-called “assault-style semiautomatic rifles” during the 2023 session of the State Legislature, and Crosscut is reporting that State Sen. Patty Kuderer (D-Bellevue) will introduce the legislation.

Minnesota Democrats hoping to enact stricter gun laws no longer have a Republican majority in their way at the State Capitol. Now in control of the governor's office and Legislature, Democrats plan to renew talks of expanding criminal background checks to cover most private firearm transfers, and of "red-flag" protective orders that would allow authorities to temporarily take guns away from people deemed dangerous.

A New York Times conference featured a bank CEO pushing the financial industry to track Americans making purchases at retailers and monitor their “suspicious activity” under the guise of “reducing gun violence.” Amalgamated Bank CEO Priscilla Sims Brown was the special guest at the Times’ DealBook confab and was interviewed by Andrew Ross Sorkin. He’s the Times’ columnist who previously proposed the gun buying monitoring scheme and spelled out the “next steps” in a column highlighting Sims Brown’s efforts after an international financial standards board adopted her petition to create the tracking codes.

Dawn had come crisp and cold. Sunlight reached tentative fingers across the sage and juniper, stretching across alfalfa stubble and climbing a mesa side. Three coyotes hunted mice in the stubble, sniffing, probing into the five or so inches of snow that blanketed the ground. Occasionally one would make a comical leap high into the air, coming down with front paws and muzzle in a cluster, trying to pin a rodent down and gobble it. Rifles in hand, my son and I stalked closer, sneaking toward a haystack on the edge of the field.

Leftist liberty deniers parrot a version of "nobody wants to take anybody's guns away" in almost any debate on the commonsense civil right of self-defense for several reasons. They do this primarily to give you a false sense of security that they really aren't out to confiscate guns — when that has been and always will be their ultimate goal.

Thanks to Eugene for inviting me to post about some of the developments in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. Bruen held that New York’s limitation of the issuance of permits to carry a handgun to those who officials decide have a special need violates the Second Amendment, which protects from infringement “the right of the people to ... bear arms.” The government may not limit that right to a privileged class.

Illinois lawmakers have scheduled hearings for their gun control package bill, falsely titled the “Protect Illinois Communities Act.” House Bill 5855 bans many commonly used firearms Americans choose to defend themselves and their families with. Proponents of the bill, however, fail to explain how disarming law-abiding citizens will keep them safe from criminals who do not obey the law. There will be opportunity for public input at the third hearing. The date of the third hearing has yet to be announced.

Blue states are pursuing new gun control measures in the wake of a Supreme Court decision this year that upended the way courts may look at gun laws in the future. In New Jersey, lawmakers in the state are advancing a bill that would severely restrict where lawful gun owners could carry their firearms with a permit that, under the new law, would cost significantly more money to obtain.

In writing his famous novel, 1984, George Orwell penned the famous phrase “ignorance is strength” as part of the fictional Big Brother government’s practice of giving misinformation to the general public. Perhaps The New York Times is trying to emulate this very same method, as one recent piece from its editorial board showcased a stunning lack of knowledge on a topic they love to write about.

Are you as good with a handgun as you used to be? It makes sense to keep track. My friend and colleague David Maglio is a former Midwest Regional Champion IDPA shooter and a retired career deputy sheriff. In his current career, he is one of the best firearms instructors around. Among other accomplishments, he holds the record for quadruple speed on the qualification course I developed for Lethal Force Institute and now use at Massad Ayoob Group — the record is 299 out of 300 points on the demanding IPSC target.

The new legislative session is just weeks away, and one state lawmaker believes that some controversial bills have a good chance at passing. Sen. Tom Brewer said that includes his gun rights bill, which would bring permitless concealed carry to Nebraska.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004)
