"Violence isn’t new. Violence has always shocked us. If anything, violence shocks us more now that we have a hundred channels of 24-7-365 media coverage bleeding in wide screen high-definition. Scholars have studied violence and how real violence has changed over time. They learned quite a bit from the attacks on our schools, churches and shopping malls. Their prescription to protect us from violence has changed as well. Unfortunately, for all the stylized Hollywood violence we watch, we remain ignorant of real solutions. We, the general public, have yet to catch up with the reality of modern public violence. The professionals who study violence can now tell us what works to stop violence, but it is up to us to put their prescriptions into practice. ..." ... |

"How many armed psychopaths does it take to change a gun law? As a nation, we have, unfortunately, not reached that number yet."
"If there’s any hope for real, proactive gun control, it may just come from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his group, Everytown for Gun Safety. Bloomberg’s activist camp plans to aggressively support legislation at the state level to expand background checks for gun purchasers." ... |

"Gun extremists, whose grasp of constitutional law and American history is typically as firm as their grasp on empathy and decency, have been telling us for some time that a well-armed populace is necessary to keep tyranny at bay. The recent announcements that white police officers would not face trial for shooting unarmed black men would seem to provide a good opportunity for these anti-oppression patriots to protest governmental abuse."
"Sure, armed white private citizens have been conspicuously absent from the struggle against actual governmental oppression in U.S. history — Native American genocide, Jim Crow, women’s subjugation, Japanese internment camps — but things might be different this time, right?" ... |

"In the wake of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary two years ago, President Obama signed an executive order to review the availability of innovative gun safety technologies."
"The shorthand for that is 'smart guns,' weapons that — through one technical solution or another — only fire when in the hands of their owner."
"Significant hurdles have been raised by Second Amendment absolutists and the NRA. Though the technology is out there and available in parts of Europe, smart guns have yet to be consistently available in the United States." ... |

"There are no words, ... two years after Sandy Hook Elementary, for a recent Pew poll that says a majority of Americans believe it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns than it is for the government of this country to somehow limit access to guns. After all the shootings we have had in America since [redacted] started shooting with his AR-15, a poll result like this is more insane than [redacted] was that morning ..."

"Those who oppose reasonable restrictions on firearm sales often argue that such steps are useless because criminals will get guns if they want them. Yes, they will — if big loopholes are left in the law."
"That’s what convicted felon Jody Lee Hunt did in West Virginia. Because he had pleaded guilty to felony charges of abduction and use of a firearm for crimes committed in Winchester, Va., in 1999 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years’ probation, it was illegal for him to purchase or possess a firearm."

"Depending upon whose estimate one accepts, anywhere from 1,000 to perhaps 1,800 Second Amendment activists turned out for a midday rally opposing Initiative 594 in Olympia Saturday, while the Washington Arms Collectors’ monthly gun show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds drew a couple of thousand more looking for pre-Christmas deals, and answers to questions about the state's new, and confusing, gun law."

"Fed up with the passage of an 18½-page incoherent, rambling, unconstitutional gun control initiative that was bankrolled by billionaires, gun owners across Washington State held the largest felony civil disobedience rally in the nation's history, brazenly titled "I Will Not Comply." No one was hurt and no stores were looted. "The radical left is at it again with the continuation of their full-scale assault against Second Amendment rights that began in 2013. Unfortunately for liberal anti-gunners, most of their efforts failed miserably ... In most other states, their demand for stricter gun control laws met with widespread backlash and ultimate failure. However, anti-Second Amendment loonies are not easily defeated, and have now exchanged their radical actions for more subdued tactics, but their goal is the same: To attack the rights of gun owners. Their latest strategy may be nothing more than a way for them to unleash their hostility toward United States veterans in a subtle way." ... |

"Well, the anti-Second Amendment Surgeon General nominee is back. Vivek Murthy, who’s confirmation vote was put on hold when Democrats discovered they did not have enough votes, might get another chance as this lame duck session comes to a close. Murthy’s delayed Senate vote is something of an embarrassment for Democrats since all they needed was 51 votes to confirm him under the new rules on executive and judicial nominations Sen. Harry Reid put forth, yet this nomination still faces the same obstacles ...""... due to queasiness among Republicans and moderate Democrats about Murthy’s positions on guns — and the stated opposition of the National Rifle Association — Murthy may struggle to be approved by the Senate." ... |

"Long depicted as the rootin'-tootin' capital of American gun culture, Texas is one of the few states with an outright ban on the open carry of handguns."
"That could change in 2015, with the Republican-dominated Legislature and Gov.-elect Greg Abbott expected to push for expanded gun rights."
"'If open carry is good enough for Massachusetts, it's good enough for the state of Texas,' Abbott said the day after his election last month."
