"I'm about to dive back into the conclusion of Absolved and ... I want to make sure I do this remembrance of an American warrior, a man who more than any other single man, made a material difference to the outcome of the battle. His story is inspiring, almost electrifying, in its incredible details. The fact that his name is almost entirely unknown to this generation of Americans condemns us all." ...

"Rifleman Dodd by C.S. Forester is likewise one of my favorite novels. Dodd, skirmisher of the 95th Rifles in Wellington's Army during the Peninsular War, was cut off from his unit as it retreated. His story of continued resistance against all odds was written in 1932 ..." ...

"I've finally lived long enough to realize the truth in the saying that anyone can become a prophet in his own land if he can stay alive past middle age."

"The great thing about gun shows is that they are the last bastion, the last gathering place, of a free people. You meet people there, chat with them, argue sometimes, shake hands and then you won't see them until the next time. Gradually, over the years, you grow a group of friends that you otherwise wouldn't have met."

"And the thing about them, the thing that sets them above most of the rest of the folks you meet day-to-day is that they're FREE, and they don't give a hoot in hell what anybody thinks about them." ...

"Brittany Zimmerman, a 21-year-old college student who wanted to be a doctor, called 911 as she was being attacked by a stranger, police say.

But the police did not come for 48 minutes. By that time, Zimmerman was dead. Her fiance found her body.

Although the dispatcher claimed later to have heard nothing, the 911 tape captured screams, gasps and what sounds like a struggle, according to the court documents.

"In 2001 the USA had the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. It has become vogue to call it the 9/11 Tragedy, as if it was a hurricane or an earthquake, but it was not. It was an act done by men, evil men. A few years later, both Spain and England faced similar events. And now India. ... All I can do is to draw operational similarities in the hope of understanding my enemy better and thus be able to defeat him. ..."

"New regulations overturning a ban on concealed weapons mean National Park officials will allow people with concealed weapons permits from North Carolina and Tennessee, or states they have reciprocal agreements with, to bring their guns into parks in the Smoky Mountains."

"The new rules take effect in January and replace laws banning concealed weapons from national parks and wildlife refuges. Until then, firearms are only allowed in if they are left unloaded in a vehicle in a case or trigger-locked."

"Concealed weapons will be allowed Great Smoky Mountains National Park and on the Blue Ridge Parkway." ...

"The gun-buying binge that Americans have embarked on this year couldn't offset a slump in Smith & Wesson's sales of hunting weapons as the legendary firearm maker moved into the red in its second quarter, dragging the stock down Tuesday."

"Late Monday, Smith & Wesson ... said it lost $76.2 million, or $1.62 a share, in the period, a turn from a profit of $2.9 million, or 7 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Knocking out a noncash charge of $76.5 million related to its purchase of Thompson/Center Arms, the company would have earned $245,000, or a penny a share -- 3 cents below Wall Street's expectations." ...

"The District of Columbia Council passed more regulations for gun owners Tuesday, months after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the city's 32-year-old handgun ban."

"Among other things, the bill requires gun owners to register their weapons every three years and receive training by a certified firearms instructor." ...

"D.C. leaders say they are trying to be respectful of the Supreme Court case while doing everything they can to enact strict gun control measures in a city where gun violence is common." ...
-------

KABA Note: Interesting that they no longer bother with the polite fiction that these are 'crime control' measures, they finally show their true intent by referring to them as 'gun control'.

"The number of guns taken off the streets1 by the Lake County Gun Buy Back program was up this year, bringing the total since the beginning of the program in 2001 to nearly 2,000."

"Besides the usual assortment of old shotguns and hunting rifles collected on Saturday, there were some more villainous weapons that had been adapted for the street: two sawed off shotguns with sawed-off stocks and a sawed-off rifle."

"... The program helps prevent accidental shootings, suicides, homicides, and other gun-related crimes1." ...

1 KABA Note: In legal circles this is what is called 'assuming facts not in evidence'. Indeed the following paragraphs refute the idea that more than 3 of these guns were actually 'street guns'.

""Nickels takes fire from gun rights activists". "Second Amendment supporters take aim at City". Make all the cute little headlines you want about last night's public hearing about Mayor Greg Nickels' proposed firearms ban on city-owned property, but the issue has caught the attention of the public."

"More than 150 people showed up at City Hall, with the vast majority sporting fashionable anti-Nickels buttons provided by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The irony is that Dec. 15 was also Bill of Rights Day, a fact not lost on on most of those who arrived to defend the Second Amendment and the more clearly defined right to own firearms as provided by Washington's constitution." ...

"When a cross-section of firearms owners gathered at Seattle City Hall Monday night to oppose Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels' gun ban scheme, the mayor was nowhere in sight to defend his plan, and the Second Amendment Foundation wonders why."

"'If ever an audience reflected the kind of diversity that elitists like Greg Nickels normally rave about, Monday night's turnout of gun owners certainly measured up,' said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb. 'There were gays, straights, men and women, including one self-described feminist Democrat party activist. I was proud of the broad spectrum represented by the firearms community.'" ...

"It is not credible that politically active groups would pass up the chance to force a Con Con to vote for their special interest. It's not believable that the powerful forces working to take away our right to own guns would overlook a golden opportunity to rescind the Second Amendment." ...

Submitter's Note: Rescinding the Second Amendment would do nothing, it does not grant a right, it merely protects a pre-existing right.

"The Associated Press is reporting that there is common thread among the persons being issued pardons by President Bush: the important role firearms once played in their lives." ...

"The story notes that President Bush has pardoned fewer people — 171 — than any president since World War II, with the exception of his father, who pardoned 74. At least seven of the 14 pardoned last week are former hunters or shooting enthusiasts. The AP reports five of them said they wrote in their petitions to the government that a desire to win back the right to bear arms was a chief reason for wanting a pardon." ...

"A controversial gun-control law passed by Pittsburgh City Council will take effect within 10 days without Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's signature."

"Whether it will be enforced remains to be seen."

"The law, which many believe violates the state Constitution, requires gun owners to report a lost or stolen gun within 24 hours of noticing it's gone. The measure is designed to stop the flow of guns into the streets through straw purchasers -- people with clean records who buy guns to sell to criminals."

"A Tulsa lawmaker said Tuesday he will file legislation to repeal the sales tax on the purchase of guns or ammunition in Oklahoma."

"'As Americans, we should not have to pay a tax to exercise our constitutional rights — especially our Second Amendment rights,' said Rep. Eric Proctor, D-Tulsa."

"The measure ... would have minimal impact on the state treasury." ...

"He said the tax should also be repealed because it could be a barrier for those needing protection."

"'People shouldn't have to pay a tax to the government if they need a gun in the home for self-protection,' Proctor said. 'No matter what, the responsibility to protect your family is greater than the state's need to generate taxes.'"

"If someone disagreed with you about an article or story you published and then complained to the police who came into your business and arrested you for disorderly conduct, would that incident be newsworthy?"

"What if the police arrested you for disorderly conduct while you were exercising any other constitutionally protected right because someone did not want you to exercise your right? Would you want to tell the people of Wisconsin how fragile it is to exercise their rights?"

The inmates of the old Warrick County Jail are long gone, but the steel bars that held them remain.

"Lt. Col. Chris Kelsey, site manager for Muscatatuck, said the National Guard wants to use the cells for a prison at the training center."

"'We want an actual prison; the more realistic the better,' he said. 'We can do the real thing or a replication. We're trying to provide the real thing.'"

"The cells at the 'old jail' in Warrick County would help the training center in that goal." ...

"The 352 guns turned in during Staten Island's first ever buy-back program includes 82 revolvers, 62 pistols -- and a pink-handled rifle that could pass for a toy."

"'You could easily mistake this for a toy,' Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. 'But it's the real deal.'"

"The Florida-made one-shot, 22.caliber rifle is an example of the type of weapon produced by firms trying to appeal to females, or, in the case of a Wisconsin company, mocking Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun crusade."

"Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan dismissed the notion hunting rifles and shotguns are not the type of weapons authorities need to be worried about, noting they can cause harm if poorly safeguarded or stolen by burglars." ...

"This weekend dozens of people concerned about the future of hunting convened in a number of Montana towns. They gathered to talk about a proposal that's sweeping the nation to lower or even abolish the minimum age at which youngsters can hunt."

"Here in Montana, the minimum age is 12, but a body of evidence suggests that by the time a modern child reaches that magic age, they are so consumed by other lures ... that they participate in hunting sporadically, and often reluctantly." ...

"So I have a radical suggestion: ... abolish the minimum hunting age ... I know that sounds dangerous. We'll have toddlers spraying the landscape with bullets, preschoolers poaching, kindergartners lost in the mountains."

"Figures from the NSW Firearm Registry obtained by the National Coalition of Gun Control show gun ownership has risen at the rate of 10,000 a year since 2004 to 687,138 in October this year."

"Multiple gun ownership has also soared. The number of people receiving permits to obtain a second or subsequent firearm in 2006 was 32,616."
