"And throughout this process, hope turned to disarray and people have realized that their safety is in their own hands (literally). In other words, the 2nd Amendment has begun to mean something to people who heretofore never gave it a passing thought. Thus private gun sales are through the roof. For example, on black Friday of this year, the FBI reported a 32% increase in gun sales over the previous one-day record. This means that in a 24 hour period, the FBI was asked to do 129,166 background checks ..." ...

Why can't Mark Meckler just 'withdraw' his attempt to legally transport his gun?

... "Going back to Meckler's case, no one seems to dispute the notion that he had attempted in good faith to comply with all relevant laws, and simply failed to adequately familiarize himself with New York's insanely draconian gun laws. Seems tailor-made for a DoJ-style free pass to 'withdraw' his attempt to transport the gun."

"Guess it doesn't work that way for the rest of us, though."

... "'In almost every other state in the nation, he would not have been arrested,' Thomas King, the president of [NYSRPA], tells International Business Times' Crimes of New York. The NYSRPA is ... the state's largest gun advocacy group. Since 1871, the organization says they have fought for Second Amendment rights in New York."

"'The City of New York is known for prosecuting legal and lawful gun owners and not prosecuting the 'bad guys' with guns,' says King. He then cited statistics saying that of the 1,900 violent gun arrests in New York, only about 300 have been prosecuted, however he has not 'known of a legal gun owner who has fallen astray of the gun laws in New York City who has not been prosecuted.'" ...

Hypocrisy Alerts on the U.N.’s Arms Trade Treaty

"There are quite a few reasons to be concerned about the U.N.’s pending Arms Trade Treaty. It poses a number of risks to the Second Amendment and, more broadly, it is based on the completely fallacious belief that all the world’s nations are actually serious about controlling the illicit arms trade. If they were, of course, no treaty would be necessary. What the treaty will end up doing is making the arms trade more dangerous, by giving the world’s dictator states an internationally-recognized right to import and export all the guns they want to." ...

"Leupold doesn’t quite know how to describe this new low-power variable riflescope: they named it the 'Patrol', but they list its product description in the 'Hunting' section of their website. As if to further add to their confusion, they wrap it in a sleek gray digicam shipping carton that’s so tactically chic that it even says 'Leupold Tactical Optics.' A small graphic on the box only adds to the confusion: 'DUAL USE: Hunting-Shooting-Tactical.'" ...

"One of the stories prominently featured on the U.S. headlines at Yahoo! News on Thursday was a Reuters story detailing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's newest step in his campaign against gun rights. The headline 'Bloomberg sets sights on illegal gun sales online' implies that online gun sales are already illegal and therefore that Bloomberg is simply trying to make sure the law is followed."

"The next big misstep in this article is its one-sentence dismissal of Bloomberg critics. 'The [NRA], the powerful U.S. gun lobby, was not immediately available for comment on the study.' "Out of the sound and fury of Attorney General Eric Holder’s day before the House last week one thing was clear: Republican members of Congress are latching onto the conspiracy theory that the Obama administration let guns 'walk' into Mexico in order to erode Americans’ second amendment rights."

"Some, like Rep. Darrell Issa, have suggested that the Obama administration decided after the scandal broke to discuss the larger issue of gun trafficking and the need for better tools (like a rule requiring dealers to report sales of multiple 'long guns') to stop it." ...

Submitter's Note: No it isn't "reasonable" since literally decades of research have shown that defending yourself with a firearm is absolutely the safest course of action when accosted.
