Former astronaut Dick Gordon and his wife recently moved into a house next to the Prescott Sportsman's Club shooting range in Prescott, Arizona and have filed a complaint with the U.S. Forest service that has resulted in the range being immediately closed down until it is "inspected" and "proven safe".

The range has been safely in operation since 1953. Local citizens are outraged. A newspaper poll indicates that 88% are opposed to the closure, 10% in favor, and 2% are undecided.

"primarily I wanted to see if The Washington Post was right. The Post, as you probably know, hates gun shows. Since all right-thinking Americans take their moral compass readings from the editorial pages of The Post...

"I was especially moved by an editorial in The Post over the weekend entitled "Gun Shows and Terrorists." The paper, to my enlightenment, found a cozy connection between terrorists and gun shows..."

The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

"In what is a uniquely American tradition, thousands of individuals will receive the gift of a fine firearm this holiday season. For some, their shiny new gun will serve as an introduction to the shooting sports while, for others, a valued addition to an existing collection.

"Whatever the case, the ISRA is urging both gift givers and recipients alike to include gun safety in their holiday plans."

In a few weeks, ordinary folks with access to the Internet will be able to check the criminal history of just about any Colorado resident from the barber to the babysitter.

Only two crucial bits of information will be needed - a name and a birthdate.

And presto.

With the tap of a key - and a fee of $5.50 charged to a credit card - the Colorado Bureau of Investigation website will yield an arrest record dating back more than 30 years, if there is one to be had.

WOOLMARKET - The sounds of gunfire were heard around the Woolmarket area two weeks ago.

The reason for the ammo being pumped into the sky was the opening of duck season along the Coast. The first duck season opened Dec. 1-2 and the second was Dec. 7-8, when hunters feasted on teal, which are the first birds to fly into the region.

The Christmas season means big gifts for loved ones. When it comes to hunters, rifles or shotguns make perfect gifts.

Hunting deer, rabbit, squirrel and ducks can be done with a 12-gauge shotgun. For hunting deer, elk or even exotics, a high-powered rifle is a must.

FAA agents penetrated screeners 446 times, once with machine gun -- A former FAA agent accuses key U.S. senators of failing to act on a 1998 memo that detailed security breaches at a major Western airport that he thinks were so alarming they should have triggered hearings and nationwide security fixes, such as those passed into law only after the Sept. 11 hijackings.

KABA NOTE: And exactly how many incidents have they had of unwarranted violence on their airplanes as a result of this "breech of security"?

High level hypocrisy is on exhibit at the U.S. Justice Department. Attorney General John Ashcroft has made a regular show of initiating and defending tough new measures to crack down on anyone suspected of links to terrorism. He is a man on a mission who will leave no stone unturned and no liberty unchallenged to stop terrorists in their tracks. But, by golly, he’ll uphold the gun rights of foreigners, no questions asked...

LOS ANGELES - County supervisors blamed federal agents for their tactics during a standoff with a man barricaded in his home last August who shot and killed a sheriff's deputy.

Supervisors criticized the agents for underestimating the potential of Beck, "a felon with a history of impersonating law enforcement officers and stockpiling weapons."

"As a result of their actions, we lost a very fine deputy," said Antonovich.

Canadians are more likely to have their homes broken into than Americans.

"In the United States, there are a lot more people with guns and they have the right to protect themselves and their property. That scares off a lot of burglars," said Dr. Marc Ouimet, a Université de Montréal criminologist and a leading expert on crime statistics.

The head of Canada's pro-gun lobby knew he had "seriously screwed up" after a jammed gun he was working on discharged, firing a bullet into a neighbour's apartment.

KABA NOTE: Sure, the guy was careless. But if he was a politician, military, or police officer, instead of the head of Canada's gun rights organization, he wouldn't be front page news.

Looking through her car window into the eyes of her knife-wielding attacker, 83-year-old Helen Shephard was stunned and did what he demanded:

She unlocked the passenger door.

In hindsight, she wishes she reacted differently. "Honked the horn maybe, or even just drive away."

KABA NOTE: Even if armed, it is *still* preferable to drive away when a would-be carjacker cannot get into your car!

Get a good look at the guy, and report the incident at the nearest police station, or call 911 if you have a cellphone. DON'T UNLOCK YOUR DOOR!

With the first few hundred of what may become a force of around 2,000 US Marines having flown in to an airport near Kandahar – now the last key Taliban stronghold following the fall of Kunduz over the weekend – it seems as though the closing phase of the Afghan ground campaign may be at hand. As these ground operations develop, they will inevitably once again emphasise many age-old factors regarding infantry combat.

This just in: Police matter when it comes to cutting crime. For most people, that's just plain common sense.

However, as Prof. George Kelling notes on the previous page, years after the successes of the NYPD's "broken windows" approach, there were still those who wanted to attribute the bulk of crime reduction in New York to just about everything but good police work.
