VCDL and GOA rebuttal to VA AG Herring's 2nd Amend. Sanctuaries

"The application of the principles set out above to Second Amendment Sanctuary Resolutions is clear. The U.S. Constitution and the Virginia Constitution are the statements of the will of the People themselves, and the compacts from which the Virginia legislature draws its authority. Should the Virginia General Assembly, along with the Virginia Governor or Attorney General, enact and attempt to enforce a law which is prohibited by Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, or Article I, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution, and the pre-existing, inalienable
rights of the People, then such law is of no legitimacy — and void."

Cross Creek’s NJROTC air rifle team has quietly become one of the best in the nation.

Cross Creek has qualified for the Area 12 Championship (comprised of teams in Georgia and northern Florida) every year since 2010. Over the past six years, they have earned five Area 12 titles and four-straight American Legion state championships.

Competitors shoot .177-caliber air rifles on targets from a distance of 10 meters. A format modeled off Olympic shooting, shooters are graded on targets shot from prone, kneeling and standing positions.

VA: Sanctuary movement dangerous

I view the Second Amendment sanctuary movement as dangerous on several levels. The defiance of government policy recalls the anti-integration “massive resistance” of the civil rights era. Like civil rights, gun legislation carries the force of court decisions. If a judge deems an individual to be dangerous to himself or others, are folks actually proposing local law enforcement to ignore and defy such an order? That is madness, endangering everybody.

PR: Puerto Rico Enacts Pro-Gun Overhaul Of Firearms Laws

The legislation’s most important provisions pertain to the territory’s firearms licensing procedure. Prior to the enactment of the Weapons Act, Puerto Ricans could apply for a possession license, or a much harder to obtain carry license. The Weapons Act combines the two licenses into a single license.

Moreover, this single license will be shall-issue. Previously, Puerto Ricans were required to petition a court for the approval of a carry permit. The legislation also puts in place a flat $200 initial licensing fee, and a $100 renewal fee. This is a significant improvement over the old regime, where firearm licensing fees could range wildly.

A new paper by three top researchers has revealed public health researchers are “are much more supportive of gun control than are either criminologists or economists.”

The report, authored by John R. Lott, Arther Z. Berg. MD, and Gary A. Mauser, is headlined “Expert Views on Gun Laws.” Lott is founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, Berg is at the Harvard University Department of Psychiatry and Mauser is with the Simon Fraser University Beedie School of Business.

Second Amendment Supporters Need to Address Prevention of Mass Shootings

Here is one simple fact: Mass shootings are a significant strategic vulnerability when it comes to protecting our Second Amendment rights for the reasons mentioned. Therefore, Second Amendment supporters should be working to find ways to prevent them with solutions that are Second Amendment-compliant.

It should not be necessary to say this, but recently, it seems important to do so: Acknowledging this vulnerability and working to address it does not make a Second Amendment supporter a “Fudd.” Such a course of action does not make them an appeaser, either. Claims that this is about “capitulating” to anti-Second Amendment extremists are phonier than Michael Bloomberg’s claims that he has respect for the Second Amendment.

NJ: New Jersey's Gun Laws: Infringement on the Second Amendment or Strong Protections Against Gun Violence?

Congress struck a bipartisan spending deal that for the first time in over 20 years would include funding for research on gun violence. The bill includes $25 million for research on gun safety to be used by the Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health. This occurred on the seventh anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Gun laws in New Jersey regulate the sale, possession, and use of firearms and ammunition, and are among the most restrictive in the country. And, unlike the Federal Constitution, the New Jersey Constitution has no provision explicitly guaranteeing the right of citizens to keep and bear arms.

VA: Focus should be on actual 2nd Amendment

We are hearing much about Second Amendment sanctuaries, but we hear little about the Second Amendment itself. A proper understanding of this amendment, complex as it is, would shed a totally different light on the idea of “sanctuaries.”

Historically, the Second Amendment was interpreted by the courts as a collective right, basically supporting the ability of states to raise militias. This changed in 2008, when in a case called Heller v. District of Columbia, the Supreme Court asserted for the first time an individual’s right to bear arms, and invalidated the District’s strong gun control legislation.

As a concealed carrier and licensed peace officer (reserve), I am all too aware of all the negative things that can occur if I am forced to shoot another person. Fellow peace officer and defensive firearms instructor Bryan Eastridge summed it up by stating that if one is forced to use their handgun, three things can happen:

You will save your life,
you will get sued,
or you will go to prison.

Maybe all three.

Gun control made an appearance at the Johnson County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, December 19. Commissioners gathered in an adjoining room for a closed session discussion with County Attorney Perry Stout directly before bringing the issue to the floor.

When they returned, the commissioners voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting Second Amendment rights. This makes Johnson County one of many cities and counties that are fighting back to defend the right to bear arms as Second Amendment Sanctuaries.

Garlands to Polk County Commissioner John Hall for proposing Polk County become a Second Amendment Sanctuary and gigs to Calvin Posner for his lack of knowledge about the primary purpose of the Second Amendment to deter or fight against tyranny [“No local law can supersede federal statutes,” Dec. 25].

Posner must have slept through civics class - not Hall. When federal or state gun control laws are passed violating rights of law-abiding citizens assured by the Second and in some cases the First, Fourth, Fifth and 14th Amendments, then sheriffs, who are constitutional officers, have the duty and authority to “nullify,” not enforce, these laws.

KS: Could this bill banning ‘red flag’ gun laws make Kansas a sanctuary state for danger?

It would be a manifest tragedy if a Kansan had reason to suspect someone was about to commit a mass shooting and did nothing to stop it.

It would be an even greater monstrosity if Kansas law actually prevented such a lifesaving intervention.

But that’s precisely what some state lawmakers want the law to do, by banning the enforcement of any federal “red flag” law that allows concerned relatives and authorities to seek a court’s help to temporarily keep guns out of the hands of those who clearly pose an imminent risk to themselves or others.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville
