Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are planning to vote this week on a pair of issues that, perhaps unintentionally, put gun control proponents in a tight spot.

For years, they’ve been demanding “compromise” on gun issues and now they’re faced with the uncomfortable “put up or shut up” scenario: legislation to tighten the National Instant Check System (NICS) – which they want – paired with national concealed carry reciprocity, which they absolutely despise.

The commissioner of the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works on Tuesday, December 5th met with the company whose workers carried guns to a city job site. A photo showing the workers with guns has gone viral, and caused controversy. City policy prohibits workers from taking dangerous weapons to the workplace, and some aldermen have voiced concerns about subcontractors bringing guns to work -- something that's against city policy.

WIVB-TV in a report published Friday revealed that the annual exchange was conceived to reduce gun violence by deterring children from playing with toy guns at a young age. “What we don’t want to do is make a child feel comfortable with a toy gun,” Leonard Lane, president of Buffalo’s F.A.T.H.E.R.S. organization, told WIVB about the program, which exchanges toy guns for other toys.

As I write this, the United States is reeling from its most recent terror attack, in New York. Unlike most attacks on US soil, it wasn’t carried out by guns, but by a truck. But, within the past couple months, a shooting in Las Vegas saw scores dead and hundreds injured, and a shooting at a church in Texas led to 26 deaths, both incidents due to firearms. After any major gun related incident, legislators bring up gun control issues. Gun sales spike, and prices often go up to take advantage of the rush. Enter our next investment: guns.

Since Ratification of 2nd Amendment National reciprocity for concealed carry would be the greatest guns rights boost since the ratification of the Second Amendment in 1791. This is because the rights enshrined in the Second Amendment would recover their fullest expression to date via national reciprocity. The Second Amendment did not create a right or any particular body of rights. Rather, it was put in place to protect rights that pre-existed in nature, rights that were given by God rather than created by government.

With the 2018 legislative session still more than a month away, gun-related measures might have died Tuesday in the Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee, which has been a stumbling block in recent years for Second Amendment-related bills, narrowly rejected proposals that sought to allow Floridians with concealed-weapons licenses to carry firearms up to the entrances of courthouses (SB 134); inadvertently display handguns (SB 148); and pack heat at religious institutions that include private schools or day-care facilities (SB 274).

Political Reaction to Texas Shooting Offers the Problem as the Solution

The fact that a bystander armed with his own rifle chased and shot the perpetrator in Sutherland Springs crucially transforms the terrain of the political interpretation of the shootings. The presence of an armed citizen "shooting in the opposite direction," as President Donald Trump put it in the hours after the killings, activates partisan attitudes about guns in Texas that advocates and political leaders can use to stifle discussion of adding even the mildest restrictions to guns. That’s because the thought that the best antidote to gun violence is good people with guns resonates sufficiently with the right audience of Republicans.

Kellyanne Conway, President Donald Trump's senior counselor, said that voting against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore would be a vote against Trump's agenda. "The president has made clear that he does not want (Moore's Democratic opponent) Doug Jones in the Senate. It would be a sneak attack of a liberal vote, a vote against the shared agenda of tax cuts, and the Second Amendment," Conway said Tuesday on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

It’s no secret that crime rates in Baltimore are at all-time highs. With more that 320 murders this year and luckless tourists being beaten in the streets, the illusion of safety conjured with the whimsical moniker “Charm City” has given way to “Murdermore.” City residents are mortified as they consider the almost nightly bloodbath, and a beleaguered police department is in no position to assuage their fears. The streets – and in many cases even the family homes – are simply not safe. But try to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon for personal protection in Baltimore and you’ll wonder whose side Maryland lawmakers are on.

But all major teacher- and school-employee groups oppose the idea. Special correspondent Kavitha Cardoza of Education Week reports.

The US Navy is turning its attention away from a decade-long, electromagnetic railgun program, opting instead, for a less expensive alternative that uses the projectiles as ammunition in existing guns, rather than a next-generation weapon. Last week, the Congressional Research Service released a report, which said the Pentagon is looking to divert from a decade-long electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) program, but are planning to use the projectiles developed in the program, which are compatible with its current powder artillery gun systems.

Alden was a cooper who made barrels and casks, and he was a crew member on the historic voyage of the Pilgrim ship Mayflower. As they were traveling to the unknown, the European explorers packed all the firearms they could muster, knowing they would be needed both for protection and for hunting. Alden kept this modified .66-caliber Italian wheellock carbine close by his side.

The muzzleloader harvest, up 4 percent over a year ago, continues through Sunday. Scopes are allowed on the guns this year for the first time. Archery season runs through New Year’s Eve.
