"Let's start out with the right handgun. While there are a multitude of handguns for defensive use, I have two recommendations. My first is a double-action revolver with at least a five-shot capacity."

"The cylinder should be chamfered for speed loaders or full moon clips. The barrel should be no longer than six inches but no shorter than two. My second recommendation would be a quality semi-auto pistol, such as the venerable 1911 design or a similar pistol. The same guidelines for barrel length should be followed. A semi-auto pistol should have a magazine capacity of at least 7 rounds. My picks for handgun calibers include .357 S&W Magnum, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, any 9mm or .45 round, as well as the big-bore .44 Magnum. ..." ...

"In baseball, football, basketball, swimming, and most track & field events, males usually out-perform females. That is simply because men, as a group, normally have more physical strength and speed than women."

"There is a sport, however, where men have absolutely no advantage over women. Indeed in this sport, still regarded by some as a 'macho' thing, women often beat men. Several variations of this sport have been in the Olympics for more than a hundred years."

"This truly gender-neutral sport is marksmanship; shooting a rifle or pistol at some target."

"In the 2000 Olympics held in Sydney, Australia, the very first gold medal won by anyone went to Nancy Johnson, an American who grew up in Illinois. ..." ...

"The prediction of the busiest 'lame duck' session in some time is fast becoming a reality. In fact, new bills are being introduced which will hopefully be passed into law before years end. ..."

"I'm pleased to report that the Senate passed the Conceal Carry Bill known as House Bill 347. The bill has been approved by a strong majority vote in both the House and Senate and the bill awaits the Governor's signature to become law. Although Governor Bob Taft has promised to veto the Conceal Carry Bill, I am extremely hopeful that we will be able to persuade him to sign this most important legislation. I would encourage all supporters of our 2nd Amendment rights to contact Governor Taft's Office and ask that he sign this legislation into law!" ...

KABA Note: This is actually a reform bill, fixing several problems with the original CCW bill.

"If there was some political strategy behind passing a concealed-carry gun bill that Gov. Bob Taft is likely to veto, Scott Borgemenke isn't aware of it."

"'There was pent-up demand for this bill. I think people were just dying for this thing to go,' said the chief of staff for House Speaker Jon A. Husted, RKettering. '... If you're going to use it as a bargaining chip, you probably threaten passage as opposed to passing it.'"

"Only once before in the past eight years have Republican lawmakers sent Taft a bill he was likely to veto. Last week's bill changing Ohio’s concealed carry law alters how a gun can be carried in a vehicle and wipes out any local gun laws that are more restrictive than state law." ...

"A committee that wants to double some hunting and fishing license fees in Michigan began the slow, uphill battle Wednesday to convince state lawmakers the increases are needed."

The fee increases would be a quick fix and might not solve all the DNR's long-term problems ..." ...
