"Two months after allowing New York City's lawsuit against the gun industry to proceed, a federal judge in Brooklyn suggested Wednesday the suit might be doomed by language in the appropriations bill passed by Congress last year."

"In a brief order, Eastern District of New York Judge Jack B. Weinstein ordered the city to explain why its suit should not be dismissed in light of the new legislation, which bars the use of a federal database that tracks firearms as evidence in civil litigation."

"The Firearms Trace System database is central to the city's suit, which alleges that gun manufacturers sell excess weapons in cities and states with weak gun laws, knowing that unqualified buyers in New York will obtain the weapons through 'straw' purchases." ...

"Rudy DiGiacinto's opposition to some of my statements about the Second Amendment led me to his Web site, which proved to be a valuable history of the militia in Virginia from Colonial times ['Founders defined 'militia' as the people, and wanted them packing,' Jan. 28]."

"Certainly, a militiaman had to be armed. But the Second Amendment did not dictate who should own the weapon that he carried."

"After independence, when militia figures were reported from each state, there were wide variations in the percentage of militiamen bringing their own weapons when called to duty." ...

"Newly married and earning low wages, it took many months for me to save enough to buy my first new Smith & Wesson 38 Special. ... but there was a problem: ... the cost of ammo was more than this poor boy could afford." ...

"One day, while complaining to Jimmy about the high cost of shooting, he asked, 'Why don't you reload your own?' I replied something to the effect that if I couldn't afford ammo, I certainly couldn't afford expensive reloading equipment."

"Jimmy then motioned for me to follow him into the back room of his shop where he introduced me to an array of reloading equipment neatly set up on a long bench." ...

"However, with her young son and teenage brother downstairs, she decided she couldn't wait and had to take things into her own hands." ...

"'We certainly do support the self-defense law because citizens should have the right to protect themselves and their families by meeting force with force,' said Autumn Fogg, an NRA spokeswoman."

"The Kansas Senate approved a plan Thursday for concealed weapons permits by a margin that could prove to be crucial."

"The Senate approved the bill on a 29-11 vote. If the House passes the bill and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius vetoes it, as she has indicated she might, a two-thirds vote of both chambers would be needed to override the veto."

"But in an election year, guns make for fiery politics, and votes could change between now and then."

"'The real question at this point in the process is whether or not there are (enough) votes to pass this bill over a veto,' said Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat who voted in favor of the plan Thursday, but doubted whether it would survive a veto." ...

People who stand up to intruders shouldn't have to worry about being arrested for assault, the South Dakota Senate decided Friday.

Senators voted 30-1 for HB1134, which would make it clear that people may repel attackers and protect property against theft or damage.

The House passed the bill earlier, but it must be returned there for consideration of some Senate changes.

"We have the right to protect our property and ourselves, especially if there is a perceived threat of bodily harm," said Sen. Jim Lintz, R-Hermosa.

Clader says the officers also broke Louisiana law when they killed the alligator."

"I grew up in a semi-rural area near Peterborough, and guns were an everyday part of life. The farmers all had a rifle and/or shotgun to keep the varmints down, and an annual hunting trip was regarded as a normal part of life. Still, it's more a matter of attitude than of knowledge, isn't it? And for my part, I had it drummed into me to never point a weapon I wasn't about to fire." ...
