Minnesota gun and self-defense laws could be set for some major changes if Bill 1467 is signed into law. It's an attempt to enhance the rights of homeowners during an intrusion, and broaden permit-to-carry law.
Supporters say the bill only reaffirms and guarantees people rights they should already have under the Second Amendment - the right to bear arms. Opponents disagree, saying it puts people in more danger, most notably law enforcement officials.

A Barry County homeowner says he took matters into his own hands Monday morning and shot a man he claims was trying to break into his home.
The incident happened around 7:00 am Monday morning on Boyson Road near 9 Mile Road in Orangeville.
Investigators with the Barry County Sheriff's Department are looking at whether the shooting is actually self defense. The homeowner says he shot an intruder, but deputies are looking at who should be charged.
“We have to sort out was it self-defense or was it something criminal that either party had done,” said Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf. |

Orlando police said a man pistol whipped another man inside an Orange County Walmart after an argument.
...
Two men in their late teens or early 20s started beating up a 46-year-old man, police said. The older man then pulled out a gun and hit one of the younger men in the head, causing him to bleed.
...
After the incident, police said they got a call from the 46-year-old man who admitted he had the gun inside the store. They said he was acting in self-defense and that the gun did not go off. |

The AzCDL-requested and historic Constitutional Carry legislation that became law in 2010 was not the be-all-end-all of restoring the right to carry in Arizona.
It was a major milestone, but there are still a century’s worth of statutes that need to be excised or significantly altered in order to truly restore your right to bear arms in Arizona.

That’s not a typo. Rather, it’s an unbelievable decision recently delivered by U.S. Judge Sue Myerscough, in a challenge which the Second Amendment Foundation filed against Illinois’s ongoing prohibition against carrying concealed weapons in that state. Said Myerscough, in rendering her decision: “[Although the] plaintiffs argue that the Second Amendment protects a general right to carry guns that include a right to carry operable guns in public … [the] Supreme Court has not recognized a right to bear firearms outside the home.” |

These questions are not new, though. In light of recent school shootings (two at Virginia Tech), folks have scrambled for solutions to the problem. While most argue for stricter gun control, some have argued that allowing students to carry guns themselves would actually make campuses safer. It seems counterintuitive, but is there any credibility in this argument? While I may personally support this policy, I’m not here calling for a switch at Drake. Rather, I only hope that as students we at least start to become more open minded to the idea and realization of our natural right to self-defense. |

Forsyth Commissioners will decide whether or not to enact gun bans at their next meeting, Monday, February 13th.
The scheduled vote will either promote the Second Amendment or trample upon it. This is your opportunity to be heard.
Commissioner Bill Whiteheart has spoken out against this ban, but needs help. It appears that most of the Republican Commissioners support lawful carry, we need to establish a presence at this meeting to ensure they don’t develop cold feet. |

The daughter of a Florida pastor is clinging to life Monday after accidentally getting shot in the head at her father's church. WTSP-TV reports that 20-year-old Hannah Kelley was standing in the Grace Connection Church near St. Petersburg on Sunday when nearby in a closet a man was showing a gun to two young men. One of them was Kelley's boyfriend, who was interested in buying a gun. Police say that although gun owner Moses Zambrana took the clip out of the gun, there was still a bullet in the chamber. The gun went off, firing through the wall and hitting Kelley. She is listed in critical condition at Bayfront Medical Center. |

A Lakewood police officer charged with siphoning more than $150,000 from a charity intended to benefit the families of four slain colleagues has been fired, officials said Monday.
The officer, Skeeter Timothy Manos, also faces a new investigation into allegations he embezzled campaign contributions from a fellow officer’s legislative campaign, KIRO TV reported Monday.
City Manager Andrew Neiditz fired Manos on Friday based on the recommendation of Police Chief Bret Farrar. Manos’ termination was announced Monday in a news release.
Farrar cited Manos’ alleged failure to obey all laws as the basis for his firing.
“I felt I had enough information on hand, and I felt it was the right thing to do,” the chief said. |

Virginia is on the verge of repealing a 20-year-old law that limits people to buying one gun per month. Both legislative chambers have passed it, and the governor vowed to sign it. But according to The Washington Post, this "makes no sense." The law was enacted in 1993 to stop the flow of illegal guns to the Northeast. The Post points out that in 1991, the ATF reported that 40% of guns confiscated at crime scenes in New York City were from Virginia. The law worked, which is why The Post writes in an editorial Monday that it is "unfathomable" that it is about to be repealed: |

A man accused of committing thefts throughout Cambria and Indiana counties was arrested Wednesday in Armstrong County.
Police said Clinton Edwards broke into a home in Penn Run, Indiana County early Wednesday morning, was shot several times by the homeowner and then fled to Armstrong County. ...
Police said Edwards was driven by his girlfriend to a home along Weston Road in Penn Run. Police said he was attempting to burglarize the home when the homeowners dogs noticed and started barking. ...
Police said the homeowner was able to get hold of the gun, but when Edwards charged at him, investigators said he fired three shots, hitting Edwards once in the shoulder and once in the thigh.

A pregnant 17-year-old girl takes matters into her own hands when an intruder tries to break into her house.
It happened near 75th Avenue and Glendale about 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Investigators say at first the burglar rang the door bell. When no one answered, he tried to break in by going through a doggie door.
What the burglar didn't realize -- a pregnant teen was there to meet him with a gun.
“He tried to put his hand inside and I guess she shot him in his hand,” says neighbor Liz Zamora.
The teen fired at the burglar, but police aren't sure whether or not he was hit. The suspect, described as a black male wearing jeans and a hoodie, took off and is still on the loose. |

A western Pennsylvania man who was shot during a burglary attempt nonetheless committed another burglary before officers arrested him, state police said. ...
State police told the Indiana Gazette they arrested Edwards in Armstrong County Wednesday morning, but not before he committed a burglary there and one in neighboring Indiana County hours earlier.
A property owner wrestled Edwards' gun away from him during the first burglary in Penn Run and shot Edwards in the arm and thigh before his girlfriend drove him away about 3 a.m., state police said.
A woman in Elderton then woke up about 5:30 a.m. to find Edwards ransacking her bedroom, state police said.
Troopers arrested Edwards a couple hours later based on her description.

A top official with the National Rifle Association said Friday that President Obama will move to "destroy" gun rights and "erase" the Second Amendment if he is re-elected in November.

The Kendall County Sheriff's Department has launched an internal investigation into an alleged incident involving an off-duty deputy pulling a gun on a pregnant woman in a Walmart express lane.
Just one week from her due date, Nicole Thurmond said she feared for her life while checking out at a Walmart store in Oswego on a recent Sunday.
"I felt someone close behind me. He started being really rude and said, 'Don't you know how to count? You are holding up the whole store," Thurmond recalled.
Thurmond said she didn't know it at the time, but the man in plain clothes was off-duty deputy Craig French.

Spokane Mayor David Condon says the city has agreed to mediation to settle the lawsuit filed by the family of a man beaten to death by a police.
Condon said Thursday an out-of-court settlement is in the best interest of the city.
The lawsuit filed two years ago by the family of Otto Zehm sought $2.9 million in damages.
Zehm was a 36-year-old mentally disabled man who worked as a janitor. He was beaten by police who suspected him of stealing money at a convenience store ATM. He died two days later in 2006. Last year, Officer Karl F. Thompson was convicted of violating Zehm's civil rights by using excessive force and then lying about it to investigators. |

While criticism surrounding Operation Fast and Furious has so far focused on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, three other federal agencies knew about the operation and some of their agents tried to stop it, according to the former chief of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Tucson.
Tony Coulson, the DEA’s agent in charge of Southern Arizona during Fast and Furious, says many federal field agents knew the ATF was walking guns to Mexico, but supervisors told them to back off when they objected.

A pastor's daughter was accidentally shot in the head at a church in St. Petersburg, police said. ...
Investigators told The Associated Press that Moises Zambrana was showing his gun in a small closet to another church member interested in buying a firearm. Zambrana reportedly took out the magazine of the Reuger[sic] 9mm weapon but did not know there was a bullet in the chamber.
The gun went off and fired through a wall, striking 20-year-old Hannah Kelley. She was transported to Bayfront Medical Center to undergo surgery and remained in critical condition late Sunday.
Deputies said Zambrana has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
No charges have been filed.
