John Lott: Don't blame hunters

"WITH all the fall-out over Dick Cheney accidentally peppering his friend with birdshot, few will probably ever hear that hunting with guns is not a particularly dangerous sport. Nor will they hear any mention that hunting can help save people's lives by helping control animal populations."

"A Nexis search of news stories found that in all the avalanche of news coverage none of the national television news broadcasts on Sunday and Monday mentioned gun-hunters' safety record. Only three of the 76 newspaper and wire stories through Monday had mentioned anything about these accidents being rare."

"Guns and hunting are back in the news this week, with the recent incident in which Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunting companion on a Texas ranch."

"A review of Gallup Poll data shows that 4 in 10 Americans report having a gun in their home or on their property, including 30% who say they personally own a gun and 12% who say some other member of their household owns one. Nearly equal majorities of gun owners say they use their gun to protect themselves against crime, for hunting, and for target shooting. Republicans are much more likely than Democrats to report owning a gun, and are also more likely to say they use their gun for hunting."

"If his shooting accident had occurred in New York state instead of Texas, and his wounded hunting buddy died, Vice President Dick Cheney could potentially be facing up to 15 years in prison." ...

"A 'number of charges' hypothetically could be lodged against Cheney under New York law, a law enforcement source said, including -- should the victim die -- a top charge of second-degree manslaughter, a Class C felony that carries up to 15 years in prison."

"Cheney also could face the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide in a hypothetical New York state case. The Class E felony carries a penalty of up to four years in prison."

"Some lesser charges, including reckless endangerment and second-degree assault, likely would be piggy-backed onto either count."

"I tried, in vain, to explain to him there is nothing in the entire book which prohibits anyone from openly carrying a weapon in Louisiana."

"His response: 'Tell it to the judge.' "

"Another 'officer,' Billiot, transported me across the Mississippi river to the jail in Donaldsonville. On the ride over, I tried to explain to HIM what the law states and the rights of any citizen."

"He said, and I quote, 'I don't care what the laws or the Supreme Court say. WE are NOT going to have people running around, wearing guns, with women and children everywhere.' "

"With all the hype surrounding introduction of 'Stand Your Ground' legislation in numerous different states (also referred to as 'Castle Doctrine,' 'No Retreat' or 'Self-Defense Bill of Rights,') you probably are wondering what all the fuss is about. In fact, if you listen to the Brady Bunch version, you might believe other states are handing out a 'License to Kill' (or 'License to Shoot First,' depending upon which spin master you are talking to.)"

"The first part of this series will examine the changes this bill makes with regard to self-defense in your own home. The second part, to be published later, will deal with changes in self-defense outside the home."

"I’ve been hunting for almost 25 years. From what I’ve read in reports of Vice President Dick Cheney’s hunting accident, the hunting party did a number of things wrong. But, ultimately the shooter is to blame in an accident. No exceptions. Ever."

"The first of the 10 basic rules of gun safety is: Always keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. The fourth rule is: Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it. The vice president obviously did not follow either rule. ..."

"Whirling around to fire at birds behind you, as reports say the vice president did, is terribly unsafe."

"You have to wonder why House Bill 400 is necessary in Alaska."

"Scenes of looting and stories of worse after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans underscore the need for self-reliance when disaster sweeps away normal law enforcement protection, along with life, property, utilities and commerce. "In a city growing ever more weary of gun violence that has repeatedly taken the lives of children, another child died yesterday. Tyshawn Stinson was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire when someone chose to meet force with force and fire bullets into the child's house."

"The morning after, in an amazingly vulgar display of bad timing, the House Judiciary Committee of the Michigan Legislature announced plans to hold hearings on a dreadful gun industry bill that would encourage people to use deadly force in public if they feel threatened."

" 'It makes me sick to my stomach that Michigan, a reasonable state full of reasonable people, would even hold a hearing on this horrible piece of legislation,' said Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. 'And to take it up right after the death of a child is absolutely appalling.' "

------
No, what is appalling is using a child's death to make sure that anyone who is accosted by an armed thug crawls away in submission like a wounded roach instead of defending their life.
