It could soon be legal to hunt with a gun in parts of a northeast Mississippi city. The Commercial Dispatch reports that Starkville aldermen may allow hunters to shoot guns on properties of a certain size. The city wants to annex additional land. Some landowners opposed annexation because they use their land for hunting. It's currently illegal to fire a gun inside Starkville city limits. |

The state Senate narrowly approved a bill Thursday that would require just about anyone buying a firearm to undergo a background check. This legislation has been a priority for gun control advocates, but all 16 Republicans and four Democrats in the Senate said it would not prevent the sort of mass shootings that have spurred calls for such laws. Scheduled for the first anniversary of a school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead, the Senate's vote was the biggest test yet for gun control during this legislative session.

New Illinois laws are putting pressure on gun stores to keep weapons from falling into the wrong hands. This week, more than two dozen firearms were stolen from a Metro East store. According to Swansea police, 23 pistols, three rifles, and ammunition were stolen in less than two minutes from the Rural King on N. Illinois Street. Two masked suspects were caught on surveillance burglarizing the store. |

A South Florida officer has been arrested after department brass accused him of selling two police-issued weapons and other police equipment to a pawn shop.
Hallandale Beach cop Yan Kleyman, 33, was arrested Friday on a charge of dealing stolen property, according to reports.
He was accused of pawning a semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic pistol and red dot lasers, the station reported. |

Five days after taking possession of the weapon Martin tried to obtain a concealed carry permit.
But during the fingerprinting and background process it was discovered that he had a felony conviction for assault in Mississippi. The date of conviction was in 1995.
Because of the conviction, Martin's concealed carry permit was rejected and his license to own a weapon was revoked by Illinois State Police.
As part of the investigation into the shooting, investigators would try to determine why Martin never surrendered his weapon to police as he should have.
Submitters note: They want to take guns from law abiding citizens, but don't take guns away from known felons. We don't need more laws when they won't enforce existing laws. |

HOUSTON – A lead investigator lied in an affidavit justifying a drug raid on a Houston home in which two residents were killed and four undercover officers were shot and wounded during a gun battle.
In the search warrant that was used to justify entering the home, officers with the Houston Police Department's narcotics unit had alleged that a confidential informant had bought heroin at the house the day before the Jan. 28 raid. The informant had also allegedly seen a handgun in the home.
But according to an affidavit filed as part of the ongoing investigation into the raid and made public Friday, the informant told investigators he had not bought any drugs at the home and had not been involved in any work leading up to the raid. |

I, and many other legislators have been trying to enact an amendment to the Iowa constitution to guarantee the rights of Iowans to keep and bear arms, as is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, for a number of years. In our current proposal, we are leaving off the language in the preamble of the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment, having to do with a militia. The reason is that opponents of a citizen’s right to keep and bear arms have used that preamble, so far unsuccessfully, to argue that the Constitutional right only applies to the military and law enforcement, and not to the average citizen. |

A handful of rural counties in New Mexico are passing resolutions saying they will not require their sheriffs to enforce a sweeping slate of gun-control proposals that have gone before state lawmakers. The "Second Amendment Sanctuary County" resolutions are being presented by sheriffs to commissioners in dozens of counties, according to the head of the New Mexico Sheriffs' Association. |

Anti-gun Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi picked a favorite target of her party – the rights of gun owners – in her spat du jour with President Donald Trump over his declaration of a national emergency to secure additional border wall funding by suggesting that a future Democratic president could declare an emergency to deal with so-called “gun violence,” which translates to executive gun control action.
Democrats have become “the party of gun control,” and they are not happy that Trump has been filling federal court vacancies with judges who may have more fidelity the Second Amendment and has placed two “originalist” justices on the Supreme Court. |

A bill currently making its way through the Pennsylvania Senate would give hunters an extra day each week to ply their trade during hunting season. Known as Senate Bill 147 (SB 147), the law would allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission to open up hunting on Sundays during hunting seasons on an at will basis. The law cleared the Senate’s Games & Fisheries Committee on Feb. 5. |

After their elections, county sheriffs take an oath to uphold the laws of the country, state and county — even when they disagree. At least 13 county sheriffs have said they won’t enforce the state’s new gun law, Initiative 1639. They must reconsider, enforce the law as it is and find another, legal way to protest. Not to do so is to flout their oath and responsibility to citizens. |

A mistake in writing up an Ohio bill could inadvertently ban several types of already legal guns and must be fixed quickly, gun rights advocates say. At issue is legislation approved by lawmakers last year that allows off-duty police officers to carry firearms and phases in pre-emption of many local firearms restrictions, among other changes.

According to a press release from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), a Prarie Grove gun store was burglarized earlier this week. Around 3 a.m. Friday (Feb. 15) morning, Prarie Grove Hardware on W. Buchanan Street was broken into by three suspects. The suspects stole multiple guns before leaving the scene. They then returned around 5 a.m. with a fourth accomplice and stole more guns.

Gun raffles are major revenue sources for some nonprofit organizations and volunteer fire departments, but a bill introduced in the state Legislature could prohibit the events. Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon, a Brooklyn Democrat, introduced the measure that would ban gun raffles. Twenty-nine of Simon's Assembly colleagues, all Democrats and nearly all of whom represent downstate districts, cosponsored the legislation.

In response to the Tree of Life synagogue shooting last Oct., the Pittsburgh City Council along with Mayor Bill Peduto moved swiftly to propose an array of five new firearm regulations. Though these types of regulations are being considered across the country, some Pittsburgh residents worry the ordinances might not lead to proper enforcement.
The ordinances proposed amend past wording in Pittsburgh gun legislation and replace certain sections “to update existing laws to meet the public safety needs of residents,” as well as adding a new section “to place a prohibition on certain firearm accessories, ammunition, and modifications,” according to the Pittsburgh City Council’s public records. |

More than two dozen firearms were stolen this week from a Rural King farm supply store in Swansea, Ill. Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, two masked people smashed the store’s glass front doors and went directly to the area containing firearms, according to the Swansea Police Department. The two broke the glass display containers and cut a cable securing the guns. The suspects took 23 pistols, three long rifles and ammunition, police said. Surveillance video captured images of the incident. |
