"A couple weeks ago, Maryland state Senator Michael Lenett (D) introduced a bill to ban so called 'assault weapons'--common, semi-automatic, detachable magazine fed rifles, in other words. Maryland's gun laws are already horribly restrictive, but SB 516 would have made them dramatically worse."

"Gratifyingly, though, Maryland residents are apparently mad as (heck), and aren't going to take it anymore, and they mustered enough grassroots pressure to have the bill withdrawn." ...

"Paul Helmke and the Brady Campaign have recently been trying to make hay over the fact that the Starbucks Coffee chain doesn't mind having law-abiding gun owners as customers. "Next month, the Supreme Court will consider whether the Constitution blocks states from restricting handguns."

"The case could continue a reassessment of firearms regulation the court began two years ago, when for the first time it struck down a law for violating the Second Amendment."

"The issue has scrambled traditional alliances, pitting gun-rights groups against each other over how to argue the case, while uniting some left- and right-leaning legal theorists over how to interpret the Constitution." ...

"The Washington State Supreme Court delivered a haymaker to anti-gunners – and strong reinforcement to gun rights advocates – Thursday morning when it handed down an opinion in the case of State v. Sieyes that states bluntly, 'We hold the Second Amendment applies to the states via the Fourteenth Amendment due process clause.'"

"The majority opinion, written by Justice Richard B. Sanders, was signed by five other justices including Chief Justice Barbara A. Madsen, with a (sort-of) concurring opinion from Justice Debra L. Stephens that takes issue with the incorporation premise, and a partly-concurring and partly-dissenting opinion from Justice James M. Johnson that argues the majority ruling isn't strong enough." ...

"Some activists are heading down the fruitless path of endless legal challenges in federal courts to validate their state nullification legislation. ... entrusting one party (the federal government) with the sole power to interpret a contract (U.S. Constitution) is the problem. ..." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
