Wesley Clark: "First and foremost, we need to do a better job of enforcing our existing gun laws." ...

Howard Dean: "I favor reauthorizing the federal ban on assault weapons and requiring use of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System for all sales at gun shows." ...

John Edwards: "...I support modest changes in federal gun laws - closing the gun show loophole and requiring trigger locks on new weapons ..."

John Kerry: "...gun rights come with responsibilities, and those rights allow for reasonable restrictions to keep guns out of the wrong hands." ...

Americans For Gun Safety Survey of Democratic Presidential Candidates on Gun Control

The anti-gun organization Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) has done a survey of the Democratic party presidential candidates for their positions on gun control. Not surprisingly, they all support extension of the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" as well as closing the non-existent "gun show loophole". Because these candidates are not as vehemently anti-gun as they would like, AGS characterizes these positions as a move to the center on gun control.

-------
"The survey shows that the Democratic candidates for president are taking the gun issue to the political center, rejecting the most far-reaching gun restrictions supported by former candidates Al Gore and Bill Bradley. All of the candidates say the 2nd Amendment confers to an individual the right to own guns and all support closing the gun show loophole, renewing the assault weapons ban, and vigorous enforcement of existing laws. However, six of the eight oppose the federal licensing of gun owners and the registration of handguns – the two gun issues that Gore and Bradley sparred over that some analysts believe ultimately cost Democrats the White House."

"This will be the first election since candidate George W. Bush made explicit in 2000 what had become implicit in conservatives' behavior. As recently as the 1994 congressional elections, Republicans had triumphed by preaching small-government conservatism, vowing to abolish four Cabinet-level departments, including Education."

"By 2000 conservatives knew that even Americans rhetorically opposed to "big government" are, when voting, defenders of the welfare state. Social Security and Medicare are the two most popular and biggest components of government (together, a third of federal outlays and rising as the population ages)."

"Liberals fear schoolchildren in America reciting the Pledge of Allegiance each day. They say they object to the under God phrase, the jingoistic nationalism, or the imaginary offense of the Pledge to minorities. But the hidden reason is that they have carefully encouraged the illusion that America is a democracy, and they fear schoolchildren reciting the Pledge will eventually notice the words. Not the words 'under God'; the words 'and to the Republic'."

"As most anyone who follows gun news knows by now, virtually all of Utah's churches have come down on the 'no guns' side of the firearms-in-church debate, either by complying with state law and giving notice that no one can enter the premises armed — which is the route the LDS Church recently took — or by standing on what they claim is their constitutional right to do so without giving formal notice."

"Either way, conventional wisdom in the 21st century says that guns do not belong in church."

"Now, if we could just keep churches away from guns."

"That's a law that would make real sense." ...

"The solution is as simple as the problem is complicated. If society could get as serious about keeping guns away from church members as it is about keeping guns away from church houses, we would really be on to something. Especially if the ban applied to all weapons, including planes, trucks, buses and bodies."

"When it comes to religion, shooting off anything other than your mouth ought to be against all law. If that were the bottom line, there would be a lot more of us around to enjoy Sunday services."

"The authority, which operates Dulles International and Reagan National airports, says it is not bound by 'the more general' state laws and that the ban is necessary for security. The authority, created in 1987, is an interstate compact between Virginia and the District of Columbia."

" 'We believe we do have under our authority the right to have such a ban, even though Virginia has legislation that would prohibit other airports in the state from having such a ban,' said Edward Faggen, general counsel for MWAA. 'We're sort of a stand-alone authority with the powers given us by Virginia and the District of Columbia.' "

More paranoia from yet another hanky wringer.

-------
"I already felt worried enough about what's going to happen come April 8, when just about anybody you meet in Ohio could be carrying a concealed weapon."

"Think about it. That isn't just the guy who flips you off on the highway. It could be the Mom who drives your kid to the birthday party. The workman who comes to your home to repair your furnace. The mourner who attends your grandmother's funeral. The hot-headed co-worker in the cubicle next to yours."

-------
The criminals are already carrying. You just don't know it until one of them victimizes you. The only difference is now anyone who did carry against the law might think twice about victimizing you, knowing you might be in a position to defend yourselves.

"She said that if federal officials made good on their public pledge to go after anyone with a felony conviction or even a misdemeanor conviction for a crime of domestic violence, thousands of hunters could potentially lose their ability to hunt or even face prosecution."

"A substitute teacher was arrested and ordered held on $100,000 bail after police pulled over his car and discovered a small arsenal of guns, and found more weapons and ammunition at his home."

"Bryan E. Bridges, 51, of Southampton, was arrested Thursday after Southampton police stopped his Blazer for an equipment violation, The Republican of Springfield reported."

"Police found that Bridges didn't have a valid driver's license, and searched his vehicle. They found a shotgun and 72 shotgun cartridges, a .357 Magnum handgun, a 9mm handgun and a can of mace, according to prosecutor Michael A. Cahillane."

"Bridges told police he was living with his fiancee in Southhampton, Cahillane said. After obtaining a search warrant, police searched the residence and found a .357 Smith & Wesson handgun, a .44 Magnum, a .38 snub-nose handgun and numerous rounds of ammunition in Bridges' bedroom."

-------
There is something seriously warped about the police state of Massachusetts. A simple equipment violation somehow leads to a search of the vehicle. Mere possession of firearms leads to a warrant to violate this man's home, and same said possession, even though he hurt no one and has no criminal record, has led to his dismissal from his job.

Is Massachusetts even part of the United States?

"Now even as a number of cities -- from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Alpharetta, Georgia -- are pushing to add them in an attempt to cut crime, others are being hit with lawsuits that challenge their curfews' constitutionality." ...

" 'If you're 16 or younger, you belong in the house, not standing on a street corner,' says Chicago police spokesman Pat Camden whose department caught 40,335 curfew violators last year. "

-------
Certainly, the Chicago police department could have put the resources behind those 40,335 citations and/or arrests to much more productive use. But they would much rather focus on exerting their control over juveniles and adults alike by placing the juveniles under what amounts to house arrest after "curfew" and disarming the law abiding.

Perhaps this begins to explain why Chicago has the highest murder rate in the country for the 2nd year in a row.

"After 21 years in law enforcement, Mike Lowe had racked up his fair share of equipment mishaps."

"While running after a suspect, he saw his gun bouncing along the ground and realized it had jostled out of his holster. While struggling with an attacker, he had seen the weapon fall to the floor."

"The holsters that did hold the gun securely, Lowe said, made it difficult to quickly re-seat the weapon if non-lethal force was needed."

"Finally fed up, Lowe decided to design a new holster himself." ...

"Lowe's holster is made out of hard plastic and has a cylinder — called a finger tray — running alongside the barrel."

"Inside the cylinder is a button that releases the holster´s grip on the gun´s ejection port. When an officer draws the weapon, Lowe said, he uses an index finger to hit the button and pulls the gun free, leaving the hand in a natural firing position."

It seemed to me that 'lawmen' in the movies and on TV made it a special point to collect all those six-shooters from the cowhands and gunslingers and put them away for safe-keeping until the gun owners left town. If the sheriff didn’t get the necessary cooperation, he threw the culprits in jail or sent them to the undertaker./;

"It is this simple fact that trumpets the safety of firearms. Guns do not kill people! They are not animate with the ability to remove themselves from their hiding places and discharging without external manipulation. The truth is people kill people. Sometimes they use guns; sometimes they use blades; sometimes they use baseball bats; and sometimes they use their hands. The fact remains that more gun legislation, leading to stricter gun registration, does not and will not stop the killing. People were killing each other long before the first black-powder device was invented (remember, Cain killed Abel with a rock); and, they will continue to kill each other even if you were able to remove every firearm from the face of the planet. It is insane to disarm ourselves only to be left at the mercy of criminals who are no more troubled by the State's new laws than they were with the old ones."

"Criminals do not confine their depredations to certain restricted areas or times. Criminals are by definition breakers of laws. If this were not so we could simply post a sign saying 'No violent attacks on citizens of Utah allowed,' and reassign all of our police to other civic duties. If the citizens of Utah are to be allowed to exercise their inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, they must have the means to defend themselves and their families. Responsible and widespread carrying of firearms is a good thing that has reduced violent crime in the 36 states that have enacted liberal concealed carry laws. It works, and it increases the public's safety."
