"Nearly two months after 87-year-old Leonard Gamage fought off an intruder, McDonough County Sheriff Mike Johnson gladly returned the gun that saved Gamage's life."

"On Dec. 4, Gamage used his .22 caliber rifle to shoot 20-year-old James Vanderveen of Geneva, in the foot after Vanderveen allegedly attempted to force his way into Gamage's residence."

"Gamage said the ordeal began just after 9 p.m. while he was sitting in his home, watching television. He does not know why Vanderveen was trying to break into the house, but he wasn't going to take any chances. After Gamage and the suspect struggled twice, Gamage spotted an opportunity to grab the gun."

"There's something different about Officer Julie Maidment this week. She's still doing the same job, protecting St. Paul Highland Park Sr. High School as its school resource officer. She's still chatty and easy with a smile, more likely to talk kids away from trouble than to punish them."

"But, if you look closer, you see it -- that small, bright yellow gun-like thing on the left side of her equipment belt. On Monday, Tasers made their first appearance in Minnesota schools on the belts of St. Paul officers."

"One perfect example is H.R. 47, the 'Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2005,' introduced by Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD). GOA helped author this important bill that would protect those who use guns in self-defense from overzealous or anti-gun prosecutors."

"H.R. 47 reaffirms the basic truth that citizens have a right to use a gun in defense of self, family, and home."

"When anti-gun extremists a few years ago began promoting the idea of universal mandatory pre-sale handgun ballistics testing... we and the firearms-owning community generally countered that it was a hare-brained idea. The extremist gun- grabbers in Maryland, however, wouldn't listen to us and enacted just such an idea into law a couple of years ago. Now, according to a report appearing in the Post on January 18, the Maryland State Police agree that the law is ineffective and expensive and should be repealed."

"Yesterday, January 27, saw an extraordinary event at the old Columbus Police Academy. Members of the city administration, led by City Council Member Michael Mentel spoon fed local media a 'photo-op' firearms demonstration that was closed to the public. There, he had police representatives showing off firearms far less powerful than those used for hunting, as well as fully-automatic guns from the city's SWAT arsenal -- the latter of which is illegal to own in the U.S. -- all for the purpose of saying how Columbus must rid the streets of so-called 'assault weapons' in order to protect children and law enforcement. The hyperbole was extensive."
