The attempted criminal assault on a student last week, who happens to be a friend of mine, and the much-reported crime wave that College Park has had to deal with, made me ponder this question: Would these assaults have occurred if the criminals in question thought that their soon-to-be victims were armed? The answer is most probably not, and crime statistics verify this. |

A Brooklyn teen was acting in self-defense when he fatally stabbed his mom's enraged boyfriend, who came at him with a hammer in a fight over loud music, police said yesterday.
Tanijel Robinson, 17, was in stable condition last night at Brookdale Hospital, where he was taken after his bloody Saturday-night brawl with Willie "Ted" Telenaque, 41, at a Canarsie apartment. |

Mitt Romney, who has touted his support of gun owners since launching his presidential campaign, yesterday acknowledged he did not become a member of the National Rifle Association until last August, campaign officials said.
A former advocate of gun control, Romney during his 1994 run for the US Senate backed measures the gun-rights group opposed, such as a five-day waiting period on gun sales and a ban on certain assault weapons. |

LONDON (AFP) - Gun crime that saw three teenage boys shot dead in London claimed another victim when a man was gunned down in his car in the east of the British capital while three people were injured elsewhere.
The killing will be investigated by detectives from Operation Trident, the Metropolitan Police's specialist unit set up to deal with gun crime within London's black community, it added.
Two suspects, also said to be black men, were seen running off from the scene but have not been found.

A visitor could drive the length of Kennesaw and think it a lot like other fast-growing metro Atlanta communities.
Except for the Confederate flags that fly atop Wildman's Civil War Surplus Shop downtown and the presence of a certain famous train, not much sticks out among the modern housing developments and retail plazas.
But in one way, Kennesaw is different: Its residents are required to pack heat. |

Exposure to gun violence makes adolescents twice as likely to perpetrate serious violence in the next two years, according to a University of Michigan study. Researchers found there is a substantial cause and effect relationship between exposure and perpetration of violence. Jeffrey B. Bingenheimer, a doctoral student in health behavior and health education, analyzed five years of data from adolescents living in 78 neighborhoods in Chicago. Bingenheimer is lead author on a paper in this week's journal Science.

The study defined exposure to firearm violence as having been shot or shot at or seeing someone shot or shot at. It defined perpetrating violence as carrying a hidden weapon, attacking someone with a weapon, shooting someone, shooting at someone, or being in a gang fight. |

Senate Republicans - furious over Gov. Spitzer's ongoing efforts to defeat them - may block one of the new governor's highest-profile nominations. The Senate GOP is weighing an all-out effort to defeat Spitzer's surprise nomination of liberal Manhattan Democratic Assemblyman Alexander "Pete" Grannis as commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation. Grannis has repeatedly won praise from activist environmental groups. But he is widely viewed by sportsmen's organizations as anti-hunter, anti-trapping and anti-gun ownership. "His record has been one of consistent hostility towards New York's hunters and shooters," the state Rifle and Pistol Association claimed in a memo urging lawmakers to reject his nomination. |

A homeowner shoots and kills a man authorities say broke into the family's Bullard home. The Smith County Sheriff's Department says the owner of Graham Farms came home to find a strange car in his driveway, and the door to his house open. They say Terry Graham shot and killed 34-year-old Hiram J. Chambers, of Tyler, after coming face-to-face with the man. Chambers allegedly reached for something in a bag, and authorities say they later found two loaded weapons. |

A disturbing recent phenomenon in Washington is that laws that strike to the heart of American democracy have been passed in the dead of night. So it was with a provision quietly tucked into the enormous defense budget bill at the Bush administration's behest that makes it easier for a president to override local control of law enforcement and declare martial law.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The British police protection officer responsible for Prince Harry has flown to Iraq to begin making security arrangements for the royal soldier's deployment to Iraq amid fears for his safety, according to British press reports.
One royal source told the newspaper it was a "distinct possibility" that Metropolitan Police representatives would continue to oversee Harry's security amid military concerns he could become a target for insurgents.
The Sun newspaper claimed Special Branch officers had been training with Harry since he joined the army in 2005.
