MI: A guide to Democrats' gun safety bills introduced in wake of MSU shooting

The last time Democratic state lawmakers introduced gun safety measures following a school shooting in Michigan, the proposals went nowhere. But they've expressed a determination to see a different result this time in the wake of the shooting at Michigan State University that saw lawmakers once more introduce legislation aimed at curbing gun violence in the state.

Democratic lawmakers — who hold majorities of both chambers of the state Legislature for the first time in decades — already planned to put forward proposals to expand background checks for firearm sales and create penalties for those who fail to keep their guns out of the hands of children before the rampage on campus left three dead and five injured.

Kyle Rittenhouse has reportedly been hit with a fresh lawsuit filed by a man he shot during the 2020 riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Gaige Grosskreutz is suing Rittenhouse along with Wisconsin police and officials, according to Fox News, which reportedly obtained a copy of the lawsuit.

In a tweet, Rittenhouse responded to the news of the lawsuit by telling his social media followers that "we can not let them win."

The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday backed a proposal that combines allowing people to carry concealed firearms without licenses and efforts to improve school safety, despite Democratic arguments that easing gun restrictions would increase violence.

A Senate committee on Monday approved a similar measure, with some gun-rights groups — which want people to be able to openly carry firearms in most public places — calling the proposal “too weak.”

The Republican-dominated House committee voted 16-7 to approve the House version (HB 543), which would allow people to carry concealed guns without going through state licensure, background screening and required training.

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said, “This rule is simply a continuation of President Biden and his ATF puppet Steve Dettelbach’s assault on the gun rights of law-abiding Montanans. Under their gun control regime, millions of Americans owning these simple accessories now have a choice: register them with the ATF with a ridiculous fee or face federal criminal charges,” in a statement announcing that Montana joined the legal action. He continued, “This rule is flagrantly unconstitutional. Attaching a common pistol-stabilizing brace does not magically transform a pistol into a federally regulated short-barreled rifle.”

Smith & Wesson introduced its M&P12 bullpup, pump-action shotgun design in August 2021, validating a concept that, until that point, had really only been explored by smaller companies with limited production capability, such as KelTec with its KSG. S&W's introduction of the M&P12 brings 12-ga. firepower in a compact platform that dramatically outpaces traditional shotgun designs in both size and capacity. Watch our Rifleman Review segment from American Rifleman Television above to learn more about this unique shotgun.

MD: Maryland delegate’s legislation seeks to limit eligibility for concealed carry gun permits

As Democratic members of Maryland’s General Assembly scramble to implement a new concealed carry gun policy for the state, House lawmakers heard testimony Wednesday on a bill to tighten restrictions on who can carry a firearm in public.

House Judiciary Committee Chair Luke Clippinger’s bill seeks to limit who may receive a permit to wear and carry a gun. It’s in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June in a case from another state that effectively also struck down Maryland’s policy as unconstitutional. The Maryland law required people to show a good reason to get a license to wear a concealed firearm.

NY: Chaos didn’t follow Supreme Court overturning New York gun law

Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a century-old New York law that had effectively banned people from carrying handguns in the state. In a 6-3 ruling in the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the court said New Yorkers didn’t have to show proper cause in order to obtain a concealed carry permit.

While the decision was lauded by gun rights activists as necessary and long overdue, some commentators characterized Bruen as a threat to public safety.

What is it that makes a little boy — practically straight out of the womb — take an interest in weapons and emulate gun-toting, swash-buckling heroes? Even doctors aren’t sure. As one pediatrician told me about my then 16-month-old son who turned every stick into a sword, “We don’t know why. They just do it.”

If you’ve raised a little boy, you know what I’m talking about. And the only thing more predictable than them being fascinated with weapons is them eventually doodling one in class. An alien with a laser gun. An elf with a sword. Rambo with a machine gun.

It appears to me that the concept of a well regulated Militia would involve not only the government, for the purposes of regulation, but also entities such as the National Guard, rendering those entities entirely sufficient. The Republicans, however, appear to conveniently ignore the first phrase, and devolve interpretation merely to the right of anyone in this country to “bear arms”, (including underage children who may be “given”a gun). The right to bear arms is not, of course, mentioned in the amendment, although that phrase is vociferously used as an argument against gun control or even gun safety.

The RIA 5.0 semiautomatic pistol promises to be “a revolutionary game changer among American-made firearms”, particularly for a company that is famous for its 1911-style pistols – the latter having gained a solid reputation among discerning U.S. shooters. The new RIA 5.0 pistol is a total departure from John Moses Browning's design and is intended to be a modern semi-automatic sporting and service striker-fired pistol with polymer frame, as the market now demands. But it also offers something extra, such as the patented RVS recoil system, designed to maximize barrel mass and linear movement for very smooth recoil.

Jose Alba, the bodega worker who was charged with murder after fatally stabbing an assailant inside the store, plans to sue the city for wrongfully prosecuting him and for the time he spent in jail at Rikers Island before his case was dropped.

Alba’s attorney, Imran Ansari, has confirmed that his client will file the lawsuit next month. Alba filed notices of claim against the city and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in September 2022 for $10 million, alleging they wrongfully brought a case against him for fatally stabbing ex-con Austin Simon in self-defense on July 1, 2022.

The notices of claim state that the NYPD botched the investigation and withheld critical evidence from the DA’s office that would have cleared Alba’s name

We already have national divorce … it’s just one-sided

There’s a reason why only people like Marjorie Taylor Greene on the right, and not her counterparts on the far left, are calling for a national divorce. That’s because we already have a national divorce in blue states, from the left’s perspective. Progressive leftists are perfectly content with the way things are currently because their voice is heard and is reflected in the policies of blue states. Conservatives, on the other hand, are completely disenfranchised because the very RINOs who wax poetic about coming together indeed are together as one with the corrupt ruling class and have successfully turned red states into pro-gun and anti-abortion versions of blue states on every other issue that matters.

Standing before a wall full of firearms at a press conference at Family Firearms in Troy on Feb. 21, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore announced the new bill he is introducing that would make the AR-15 the “National Gun of America.” The AR-15 National Gun Act would place the popular semi-automatic rifle next to other American symbols, like the American Flag, that have been designated as such with bills passed by congress. “The right to bare arms was so important to our founders that it was listed second in our Bill of Rights,” Moore said. “The radical left does not care about constitutional rights when it conflicts with their anti-second amendment agenda.

Wednesday, Iowa gun rights groups rallied for their right to bear arms during Second Amendment Day in Des Moines.

They’re pushing for more pro-gun legislation to pass this year.

One bill they're in favor of would create gun safety training in grades K-12th.

The bill was originally sent to what’s commonly referred to by activists as a “kill committee,” one where establishment leadership sends bills to never see the light of day. But in a move to save the legislation from almost certain defeat, supporters made a motion on the full Senate floor to withdraw the bill from the Committee on Interstate Cooperation and move it to the Senate Judiciary committee. The motion passed on Tuesday by a vote of 31-21.

SB67 is similar to a law that was passed in Missouri in 2021, which is already having a significant impact on ATF enforcement capabilities in that state.

Gun rights advocates are backing a bill that would prevent state government agencies and pension funds from doing business with investment firms that boycott the gun industry.

“If we can’t have normal commerce in America, then what good are your rights?” Iowa Firearms Coalition president Dave Funk said at a statehouse rally Wednesday. “…Financial institutions, credit processors, insurers and now freight companies have been increasingly boycotting the firearm industry and Second Amendment as part of the ‘woke’ ESG movement.”

It happened again today: I saw the term “Ultimate Manstopper” and my head exploded. Fortunately, I was able to get all the gray matter stuffed back inside my cranium before it got cold. It was close.

The incident occurred during a humorous series of text messages among the GUNS staffers when somebody used the aforementioned phrase in a sarcastic way. This is the only time the term is allowed to be uttered around here because it has otherwise been banished except for ironic purposes. Let me explain.

In December of 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) confirmed that the state of Florida will soon improve the concealed-carry permitting system it has had in place since 1987 by adopting constitutional carry as well. In so doing, Florida would become the 26th state to get out of the way of the peoples’ right to “bear arms.” If this happens, in just a few decades, the United States will have gone from having one state with a permitless carry system in place (Vermont) to having a majority of states with permitless carry systems in place.

The ban has been repeatedly challenged, but unlike most firearms regulation lawsuits, the fight has had little to do with the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Instead, it’s become one about agency deference, Stevenson said.

The issue has divided federal appellate courts and, in at least one instance, judges on the same court. Against that backdrop, the ATF and the Justice Department have been reluctant to prosecute bump stock owners.

The Flathead County Attorney’s Office will not pursue charges in an April 2022 fatal shooting outside the Snowslip Inn near Essex.

On April 16, shortly before 11 p.m. Jeremy McKenzie, 36, of Odessa, Texas was allegedly shot once in the abdomen by Joseph Pino, 40, a Flathead Valley resident.

“Our office has officially declined to press charges in the matter,” County Attorney Travis Ahner told the Hungry Horse News on Wednesday. “There were issues of self defense.”

“The Student Government Association is in agreement with both President Dr. Cathy Monteroso and Police Chief Ron Fox. Key points were that with the addition of concealed weapons on campus, the concern is that there is a lack of a way to monitor and control the weapons and that would be an issue. Additionally, the well-documented mental health crisis in society, especially among college-aged students, poses a threat to the idea of allowing students to have weapons, even if concealed, on our campus.

New York has a truly asinine law on the books: It’s illegal to ship pepper spray here. But it’s not illegal to own it or use it in certain cases of self-defense.

I’m calling on lawmakers, as well as Mayor Adams and Gov. Hochul: It’s time to give constituents easy access to basic self-defense.

I know it first hand as a young woman living in Manhattan. Last May, I wrote about an encounter with a menacing man who chased and threatened me. I managed to scare him off by brandishing my sparkly pepper-spray keychain — which I had to purchase in New Jersey.

The U.S. Attorney's Office, ATF, Homeland Security and the Cincinnati Police Department are cracking down on violent offenders caught using or making a device called a Glock switch.

In just two seconds an already deadly weapon can be altered to cause mass danger.

Federal and local officials say they're seeing these types of guns confiscated on a weekly basis in Greater Cincinnati and Ohio.

"In Cincinnati, we've already begun prosecuting a handful of cases. Three Glock switch cases are pending in Cincinnati,” said US Attorney Southern District, Kenneth Parker.

But more than three months after Fernando Rodriguez, 22, was accused of shooting Onofre “Tito” Garrido after a scuffle, no actual criminal charges have been filed. Rodriguez’s arraignment, pushed back six times since his arrest, is now set for Friday but may face another delay. Though Garrido and his attorney have a scheduled meeting with state prosecutors later this month, they’re concerned the state’s controversial Stand Your Ground law may be stopping prosecutors from moving forward.
