HB183 will eliminate the current $7.50 fee for background checks, and will also prevent BCI from keeping a registry of gun owners by requiring that records of people who pass the checks be destroyed immediately.

A House panel voted 9-1 Wednesday in favor of a bill that would allow permit-holders to carry concealed weapons in Missouri with as little as four hours of handgun training. A second bill that would legalize the carrying of concealed weapons in a vehicle's passenger compartment was approved 10-0. The proposals now move to the House floor, where they are expected to face significant opposition. |

A federal judge was expected to decide today how long a Lebanese man will spend in prison for shipping shotguns and 750 rounds of ammunition to his homeland, apparently to help the terrorist group Hezbollah.
Sentencing guidelines suggest Detroit resident Ali Boumelhem could receive 37 to 46 months behind bars. The government is asking U.S. District Judge George C. Steeh to increase the punishment. |

The state firearms examiner who testified last year that Jeffrey Cookson's Taurus 9 mm handgun was the weapon used in a 1999 double murder in Dexter has changed his story.
Cookson was convicted last December of the shooting deaths of 21-month-old Treven Cunningham and 20-year-old Mindy Gould. But now he is petitioning a Penobscot County court for a new trial. |

The man who Pittsburgh police say held them at bay for three hours and then shot two officers was accidently released from the Allegheny County Jail nearly two years ago and should have been serving time in prison.
Cecil Brookins, 46, of Homewood was freed after a bureaucratic foul-up in his paperwork that has left court and jail officials blaming each other. |

Wisconsin has come a step closer to allowing law-abiding citizens to be trained and licensed to carry a concealed weapon for self-defense. The Assembly Criminal Justice Committee passed the Personal Protection Act (PPA) on a bipartisan 10-4 vote.

Claude Webster, Franklin County's Director of Public Safety, was in the car behind her that afternoon, beeping his horn at her.
