The Senate debates on the 'Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act' (now S1805, previously S659) commenced Wednesday morning and throughout the day.

Debates will continue 9:30am Thursday and can be viewed on C-SPAN2 on television or online at the above link.

Amendments to be debated do include Sen. Feinstein's bill to renew the so-called "assault weapons ban", Sen. McCain's attack on gun shows, a bill on so-called "cop killer bullets" -- and some other stuff not authorized by the U.S. Constitution.

If you have not yet made your statements to elected officials, now is a good time to invest a few minutes calling and/or faxing the congresscritters. Use the following address to get the contact data you need.

"Three Republican senators agreed Tuesday to support renewal of the soon-to-expire assault weapons ban, a small victory for gun control proponents as the Senate prepares to wade into several contentious gun issues this election year." ...

" 'Although I voted against the ban a decade ago, over the past 10 years it has reduced crime dramatically and has made our streets safer,' [Virginia Senator, John] Warner said. 'The legislation also has protected the rights of gun owners better than many of us predicted.' "

The two other U.S. Senators whose careers need to be ruined on election day: Mike DeWine of Ohio and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.

Naturally, the sleaziest and most dishonest of anti-gun foes is pleased:

"The three GOP senators' support does not guarantee the amendment's approval in the Senate, but 'this gives the effort to renew the assault weapons ban new momentum,' said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a sponsor of the original assault weapons ban." ...

"Reasonable people do not believe that Ford or General Motors should be sued when a drunken driver speeds into and kills a pedestrian. They understand that the manufacturer should not be faulted merely because its product is used improperly and illegally. It is obviously the driver who needs to be punished."

"Similarly, the predations of arsonists do not prompt litigation against matchbook makers any more than the maker of Swiss Army knives is responsible for stabbings or the makers of Louisville Sluggers are to blame when their product is used in a beating."

"Yet a minority of people and politicians believe that the manufacturer should pay when a gun is used improperly or illegally." ...

"The White House is opposing addition of gun show and assault weapons restrictions to a bill shielding firearms makers and dealers from lawsuits, prompting angry complaints from Democrats that President Bush is reneging on earlier support for the two proposals."

"The dispute emerged as the Senate began debating the lawsuits measure, which is strongly backed by the National Rifle Association as well as the White House..."

"The bill easily cleared its first procedural hurdle yesterday. But close votes are anticipated on the gun-control proposals, which would require background checks for purchases at gun shows and extend for 10 years the current ban on 19 types of semiautomatic assault weapons, which expires in September." ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- "Legislation that protects gun manufacturers and distributors against lawsuits over gun crimes passed its first Senate test Wednesday."

"Democrats said the cost to Republicans will be public votes on extending the assault weapons ban and requiring comprehensive background checks at gun shows."

"The bill providing for immunity from suits won the support of 75 senators in a test vote and opponents acknowledge it has the backing to pass. Still, several Democrats and Republicans plan to force votes on less popular gun measures."

As an answer to the problem of gun violence, ordinary law-abiding citizens should be permitted to carry weapons.

Citizens must be able to defend themselves; this is a fine example of why liberals don't do security well.

" 'It’s absolutely ridiculous...I don’t know what they are thinking," --Meredith Police Chief John Curran

" 'It’s a right to bear arms, but not to put it under your jacket and hide it. We aren’t out to deny people their rights...all we are saying is that if you have to have a permit for it." --Franklin Police Chief Nelson Forest.

"From a law enforcement perspective it’s good for officers to have ability to research and identify individuals who might be armed." --Moultonboro Police Chief Scott Kinmond

KABA NOTE:

The number of people with concealed weapons permits who've shot at law enforcement officers is so tiny it's a minuscule blip on the statistical radar. Police officers are far more likely to shoot an innocent person than be shot by a concealed weapons permit holder. Furthermore, if someone is of the mindset to shoot a police officer, that person isn't likely to see a "permit" anyway. So this is just more fear-mongering.

Most importantly, the "safety" of government employees is a concern, sure -- but that concern is trumped by the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

An East Bay man is under arrest, accused of firing shots at his dog that he says was being attacked by two other dogs.

Officers took Lindon Horn into custody after two pit bulls attacked his spaniel near Pinole. Horn's family says he fired warning shots, called police and even tried to use an umbrella to get the dogs away.

But nothing worked according to the family. The family members say their dog was suffering and Horn shot it to put it out of its misery.

Horn's son, Lindon Horn Jr., told NBC11 News, "I'll get over my dog, it sucks though. I have my dad doing the right thing and he's going to jail. I really don't understand."

Contra Costa sheriff's deputies say Horn fired several shots. He is charged with discharging a firearm in a negligent manner.

This is quite easy, for bad guys, in a police statist paradise like Maryland. No resistance is expected or likely -- especially at a place like Burger King, where company policy requires everyone to be a passive, submissive, defenseless weakling.
-------

"Police throughout the region searched Tuesday for two armed men who robbed and beat a Burger King employee at closing Monday."

"The 10:30 p.m. incident at the Burger King on U.S. Route 220 occurred when an employee locking the door from the outside was struck from behind by a pistol butt, knocked to the ground and then kicked several times, according to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department."

"The employee was taken back inside the business where he was forced to empty a safe. The suspects then tied the employee before leaving with an unknown amount of money."

"The victim was taken by Keyser EMS to Potomac Valley Hospital where he was treated for a laceration to the head." ...

"Members of the notorious robbery-holdup gang responsible in the series of heists in Metro Manila are on a roll after they perpetrated a daring robbery in last week."

"The gang staged a daring armored van robbery around 3:15 p.m. on February 19 in downtown Dagupan, but failed to snatch the money from the bank teller and the security escort in Dagupan. The Export Bank guards clashed with the gunmen, who were forced to retreat."

"The gang, composed of some eight to 10 people with either police or military background, was equipped with two-way radios, high-powered weapons like M-16 and M-14 automatic rifles, .45 and 9mm pistols and sometimes wear police and fatigue uniforms."

"A 54-year-old man killed and raped because he was spurned by a woman, the Old Bailey was told today."

"Francis Goff forced his way into the 43-year-old woman’s home and stabbed to death Clinton Darch, 29, who had met her ten weeks before, it was alleged."

"After she watched her friend being stabbed five times in the living room, the woman was raped in an upstairs bedroom, said David Jeremy, prosecuting."

"She woke the next morning to find Goff gone and telephoned police who arrested her for murder."

"But later, Goff admitted to killing Mr Darch but said it had been self-defence or an accident. He said the woman consented to sex with him."

-------
And if she'd had access to a gun she might have saved Clinton and avoided being raped. But to gun banners, it's better to be raped and murdered than to shoot a murderous rapist. The proper descriptive term for people who take that position is "morally and spiritually bankrupt."

"Zaccardelli has refused to apologize, and rejects the finding of undue force by the independent but toothless Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP." ...

" 'Police fired over 500 rubber bullets and over 3,000 tear gas canisters,' [Robinson] said of the force used against mostly peaceful demonstrators, including himself." ...
