WI: Concealed Weapons Veto Upheld

"The state Assembly voted to uphold the governor's veto of the concealed weapons bill. Republican leaders fell one vote short of the two-thirds majority they needed to override the vote."

"The final vote was 65 to 34."

"The concealed weapons bill would have made it legal to for people over 21 to carry a concealed weapon -- such as a gun or knife -- after obtaining a permit. Wisconsin banned concealed weapons 134 years ago, and remains one of only four states that does not permit carrying concealed weapons."

-------
But they do allow open carry. So instead of having background checks, safety training, business exclusions etc., it's time for Wisconsin residents to carry proudly and in the open.

"Let’s start with a logical approach. If you were president, wouldn’t you be most desirous of protecting the lives of American citizens, both in the air on airliners and those working in skyscrapers as well? Wouldn’t you first seek the most common denominator as concerns all those flights in order to implement an effective security policy? And wouldn’t the common denominator be the flight crews themselves? Wouldn’t you focus on precisely the same key target that the terrorists would focus on; namely, the cockpit crews?" ...

"Western political thought, from ancient Greece to the Enlightenment, theorized that the basic animal instinct of man to adapt and survive threats in his physical environment also formed part of the body of "natural rights" endowed at birth that allowed man to protect himself from ever-changing, complex, and sometimes threatening social intercourse."

"The list of potential threats has changed little across time and space. As philosophers from Cicero to John Locke would agree, the number one threat to man has never been wild beasts or criminals lurking in dark shadows; it is, always has been, and always will be, tyrants and governments. More specifically, the most dangerous government to life, liberty, and property was never the government halfway around the world; it was the one in your own backyard." ...

"The colonists had been storing arms in anticipation of the growing threat posed by their government. The first shots of the American Revolution were fired in response to a column of British regulars trying to seize some of these arms. In essence, the American independence movement was initiated by a government attempt at gun control."

"Gun control advocates are afraid Congress won't renew the ban - allowing guns like Uzis and AK-47s back on the streets." ...

"Delegate Neil Quinter filed a companion bill Tuesday that would expand the state's assault pistol ban to include what he calls 45 'weapons of war.' "

"Krafft, who is making something of a habit of carrying weapons into very public places, attended a news conference calling for the repeal of the 2003 law that made it possible for him and many other Minnesotans to more easily get concealed weapons permits. He engaged his opposites in banter and light debate and, when asked, opened his cape to reveal a Para-Ordnance P14 hanging from a sling under his left arm."

" 'I always carry it,' Krafft said."

"But to the state Capitol while the Legislature is in session and the building is buzzing with first-day activity?"

"Despite heightened concerns about homeland security, Minnesota law allows anyone with a legal permit to carry a loaded handgun into the Capitol complex as long as the state's public safety commissioner is notified. The commissioner does not have to approve of it — only to be informed, according to Capt. Cheri Frandup of the State Patrol's Capitol security division."

"It is easier to rob a bank than it is to legally own a firearm to stop a crime in New York City, proving that thugs thrive where law-abiding gun owners are scarce, said Alan M. Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF)."

"Bank robberies have tripled in the last three years... and in many cases, the robbers aren't even using guns. They just stroll into a bank, hand the teller a note, and walk out with the loot."

"You can't smoke in a bar, cabbies can't hold cell phones while they drive, dogs can't be unleashed, and average law- abiding citizens can hardly own, much less carry, guns for personal protection, but any outlaw looking for an easy score can pick a bank and rob it almost on a whim..."

"A 14 year old is under arrest after D. C police allegedly found him with two powerful guns. And while the investigation is just getting underway, it seems the boy is from one of the streets linked to Monday's fatal shooting of a Ballou High School student."

"MPD spokesman Sergeant Joe Gentile says around 12:45 Tuesday, officers tried to pull over a car in the 600 block of Yuma Street, Southeast. The car backed into a trash bin, and when police pulled the suspect out, they say they found a fully loaded semi-automatic handgun in his pocket, and a Mac-11 machine gun in the pouch of his sweat shirt."

"Although privacy worries led several states to pull out of a federally funded crime and terrorism database project, others are actively considering joining and thereby sharing information on their citizens, The Associated Press has learned."

"Mark Zadra, chief investigator for Florida state police, which runs the Matrix project, said organizers have given presentations to more than 10 Northeastern and Midwestern states in recent weeks, arguing at each stop that the database is an invaluable law enforcement tool."

"Officials in Iowa and North Carolina said Friday that they are exploring the system. AGS claims it is a 'centrist, nonpartisan group' but consistently demonstrates it is nothing more than an anti-gun lobbying organization cut from the same cloth as the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The goal of AGS is to pass laws that ban the ownership of all guns except for law enforcement officers and on-duty military personnel."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The Utah Supreme Court will have the final say on whether employers have the right to ban guns from company parking lots.

The state's highest court heard arguments from both sides yesterday after three former America Online employees sued the company for wrongful termination.

AOL fired the men in September 2000 for transferring guns among their vehicles in the company's parking lot at the Ogden call center.

Utah state law allows employers to ban guns from their workplace. But the court will rule whether that extends to the company's parking lots.

The court took the case under advisement.

"On the day of the shooting he said he did not understand why anyone would carry a handgun because handguns kill people; though the city licenses people to carry guns, he did not understand why anyone would carry one. He was not consciously trying to triangulate liberal Democratic voters on an issue that appealed to them; he was making a statement in the heat of the moment."

"Undoubtedly however, those Republican and conservative voters he is now courting on Staten Island and in Queens will recoil at his gun position, and since pro-gun people vote the issue, it will hurt Bloomberg on Election Day. The anti-gun people, who usually do not vote the issue, will approve but stay with their Democratic choice."

"Nothing says, 'I love you,' more than a new firearm or firearm training course."

"This Valentine's Day, show the one closest to you how much you care by giving the gift of self-defense. Whether it's a new firearm or tactical defense course, your gift of self-defense will provide a unique and personal way of expressing how much she means to you."

"Take your loved one to the local firearm retail facility and consider a handgun, small handgun for CCW use, or shotgun for home defense. She can complete the paperwork while you peruse the latest firearm accessories."

"Firearm training - not just safety, but tactical as well - is as important as ammunition. There are various types and levels of training. Basic safety and use is great for the first-time gun owner. Also useful is a tactical course that will not only help you map out a plan in the event of an attack, but will also sharpen the self-defense mindset. Low-light and advanced tactical training never goes out of style and lasts for a lifetime."

"Don't know where to train? Firing ranges usually offer some form of instruction or can refer you to a knowledgeable instructor."

Dorothy Maddock's eyes aren't what they used to be and she's hard of hearing, but like many seniors she refuses to be a victim and is packing heat for protection.

"The idiots that are out there, they don't care about us, what we have," said retiree Maddock. "They'd just as soon kill us for a buck than look at us."

Another gun-toting senior agreed, "I can't run and I can't fight them," said Terry Shown.

According to national studies, for the first time in history Americans 65 years old and up are more likely to own a gun than any other age group -- 37 percent, irrespective of race and income.

"The elderly have always been an attractive set of victims for criminals to attack because they offer relatively little resistance," said John Lott, of the American Enterprise Institute (search).

Forty-six states now let citizens carry concealed weapons (search), but is it safe for seniors whose hand and eye coordination isn't what it used to be to own a firearm? Haddock and friends say it's their right and they aren't taking any chances.

"Gun owners, the Conservative Party and county clerks said Thursday that Gov. George's Pataki's proposal to hike the cost of getting and renewing a handgun permit is an assault on the constitution."

" 'This is another thinly veiled attempt at gun control,' said Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association."

"The Republican governor's proposal shocked the group that has long focused on Democrats' gun control efforts, he said. The cost and regular renewals would likely reduce the number of handgun owners while giving more gun control power to government, he said."
