Gun Safety (Read: gun control) Predicted to Be Big 2004 Political Issue

"The most hotly contested bill is the one that would protect gunmakers from civil-liability lawsuits. The U.S. Senate is scheduled to debate the measure in early March."

"The bill has strong backing and is likely to pass, but some gun-control advocates are hoping to add amendments to it. For example, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is trying to add a provision that would require background checks for all gun sales at gun shows."

"The other highly contested measure is the assault-weapons ban. The National Rifle Association is strongly opposed to its renewal, while gun-control advocates are seeking to make the ban permanent, as proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)."

"Adam Richardson, Esq., counsel for John Monson, owner of Bill's Gun Shop and Range in Robbinsdale, has served a summons of complaint to both KMSP Channel 9 and the Minneapolis Star Tribune, for false and libelous reporting ... " ...

"The Minneapolis Star Tribune filed a remarkable story defaming Bills, entitled 'Robbinsdale Shop Named in Study of Guns, Crime'. They falsely implied, among other things, that Bills is or has been involved in illegal gun trafficking."

"Equally remarkable was Channel 9, KMSP TV's defamatory statements regarding Bills, falsely calling into question compliance with federal firearms regulations and falsely implying among other things, that Bills 'is a bit shady', an actual quote." ...

Here's hoping they receive every penny and that more and more gun sellers and manufacturers start fighting back.

"DESPITE SEPT. 11, 2001, changing the calculus of our lives, little attention has gone to a looming deadline that'll make this country even more hospitable to really bad guys: the expiration in September of the federal ban on assault weapons.”

"You know, there really should be a Godwin’s Law equivalent for dragging the September 11th tragedy into debate. Never mind that this well-beaten strawman has absolutely nothing to do with the assault weapons debate. Never mind that it’s a transparent and quite idiotic ploy to draw attention away from the topic at hand and stir up the emotions of the reader, making him more receptive to the empty rhetoric to follow ..."

"Washington County sportsmen will join hundreds of others who plan to descend on Annapolis next week to try to block major gun-control legislation.

" 'It's going to get quite crowded down there,' said Steve Palmer, president of the Washington County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs."

"Their target is legislation that would extend the rules of a federal assault weapons ban that is set to expire Sept. 13."

"Palmer said wording of the proposed law is so vague that it could be used to ban guns used for legitimate purposes such as hunting and target shooting."

Recording gun sales is creating de facto registration

"Keeping a record of firearm sales is a de facto registration program. Although gun-control activists don't see a problem with such a program, it sets a dangerous precedent and would be the government's necessary first step in confiscation of privately owned firearms."

"It might seem a bit over the top in today's world, but our nation's Founding Fathers intended for citizens to keep firearms as one way to keep the government in check. The Second Amendment reads, 'A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.' ..."

"The generations-old tradition of hunting is getting safer in many areas, in part because of aggressive safety programs by government as well as Internet courses and safety tips distributed by retailers."

"In New York this week, for example, officials announced a record low for injuries. In 2003, 32 injuries and two fatalities were reported among the 700,000 hunters who took to the field. That beats the old safety record of 43 injuries in 2000, when the state averaged five fatalities a year." ...

"The reasons that turn liquor and automobiles into lethal weapons apply just the same to liquor and guns. So, why is one officially scorned but the other officially tolerated?"

"There’s no good reason at all, except for a glitch in the law and some zealous Second Amendment advocates who make life miserable for lawmakers who don’t fall into line. The law only bans someone from carrying a concealed weapon into a bar."

If you use that "logic," then people should be prohibited from driving to a bar. Furthermore, just because one enters a bar, doesn't mean one will be drinking.

"I have heard from fellow pilots, management, and industry observers that 'some' pilots should not be trusted with guns. I can only answer that by stating that procedures are in place within the system to identify pilots who are psychological risks. Anyone who feels strongly enough about a pilot’s mental state or trustworthiness should utilize the tools available to deal with this problem. If we can trust them with the lives of hundreds of passengers, millions of dollars worth of airplanes, and literally billions of dollars of liability every time they leave the gate, we had damn well better be able to trust them with a gun."

IDs and the illusion of security

"First, verifying that someone has a photo ID is a completely useless security measure. All the Sept. 11 terrorists had photo IDs. Some of the IDs were real. Some were fake. Some were real IDs in fake names, bought from a crooked DMV employee in Virginia for $1,000 each. Fake driver's licenses for all 50 states, good enough to fool anyone who isn't paying close attention, are available on the Internet. Or if you don't want to buy IDs online, just ask any teenager where to get a fake ID."

"Harder-to-forge IDs only help marginally, because the problem is not making sure the ID is valid. This is the second myth of ID checks: that identification combined with profiling can be an indicator of intention."

"But instead of raccoons, there were strangers in the dark, yelling at him in a language he didn't understand -- then a fusillade of bullets."

"Pena was shot twice in the shoulder, according to his family, and was listed in critical condition Tuesday at WakeMed."

"Once an advocate of lifting the ban, Sherman, D-Port Wing, flipped to the other side during a dramatic floor vote and left the Republican-run Assembly one vote short of the 66 it needed to override Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of a bill repealing the weapons ban. The vote was 65-34, with all Republicans and six Democrats supporting the override."

"Sherman's vote switch, placing the interests of Jim Doyle and his anti-gun Democrat cronies above public safety and the citizens' constitutional rights was despicable, and should be remembered when he runs for re-election... The hysteria drummed up by anti-gun extremists prior to the vote was an insult to every responsible, law-abiding Wisconsin gun owner. He said the youth tried to elude police but backed into a trash bin, and when officers pulled him from the car, they saw that he had a .380 semiautomatic handgun in his coat pocket and what Ramsey said was a Mac-10 submachine gun in the pouch of his sweat shirt. "From the time we went live asking who News & Views subscribers would vote for if the presidential election were held today, through early Monday morning, we had roughly 400 respondents. The remaining 66% said they'd vote for a third-party candidate or just stay home on election day."
