Public health is the lingua franca through which liberal America understands guns, and the traumas they engender.
When President Biden called for action after last October’s mass shooting in Maine, he did so by once again casting gun violence as an “epidemic”—a Hippocratic term taken from the study of the spread of infectious diseases.

Early Saturday morning, a man died in north Midland as a result of self-defense.
According to the Midland Police Department, 37-year-old George Samuel Butler entered a home at the 1400 block of Daventry Place “by force with a rifle.” MPD reported that the homeowner then “placed the suspect in a choke hold in an apparent case of self-defense.” MPD responded to the scene at approximately 4:09 a.m. about a disturbance with weapons. |

– A teenager who was accused of stabbing two students at a high school in Queens has had the charges dropped after a social media video supported his self-defense claim.
– The two stabbed students, aged 17, are now charged with gang assault. One of them has been investigated before in connection to two shootings, including one resulting in murder.
– A Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol was found in one of the charged boys’ jacket, leading to additional charges of gun possession.
– The 16-year-old boy, initially identified as the stabber, suffered minor injuries and showed evidence of a group attack in his defense. |

A federal judge in New York has granted a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to the Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a challenge of a public housing authority gun ban in Cortland, N.Y. The case is known as Hunter v. Cortland Housing Authority.
U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby handed down the 29-page decision, which enjoins the defendants and their officers, agents, servants, employees and attorneys “from, taking any action to enforce, or otherwise require any person or entity to comply with the firearms ban as set forth in the ‘Tenant’s Obligations’” in the standard lease agreement pending final resolution of the case. |

Attorneys for the Second Amendment Foundation have filed an appeal brief with the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in their challenge of the ban on so-called “assault weapons” by the State of Connecticut. The case is known as Grant v. Lamont.

On Friday, a Utah House committee passed a bill that would prohibit financial institutions from tracking or disclosing firearm-related transactions, undermining efforts by the feds and other entities to collect data on gun owners.
Rep. Cory Maloy introduced House Bill 406 (HB406) on Jan. 26. The legislation would prohibit a financial institution operating in Utah from the following:
--Requiring a merchant to use a firearms code specifically for firearms retailers located in the state from a general merchandise retailer or sporting goods retailer

When Antonio Walker was arrested in late January, accused of shooting someone in the neck, it wasn't his first run-in with Baton Rouge police.
He had twice been charged with aggravated battery, first in 2015, then in 2017, and had faced numerous drug and traffic counts.
“In 2019 he was medically transported for being emotionally disturbed. In 2020, his mom calls the police because he’s off his meds. Again he’s transported. There are 1.2 guns for every person in the United States, with the total number of firearms in circulation estimated to be over 393 million (Small Arms Survey). Gun violence is the leading cause of death among young men ages 15 to 19, and firearms are involved in 51 percent of completed suicides and 73 percent of all homicides. Alamogordo, New Mexico has seen a spike in violence and murders among youth and young adults in 2023. The increase in crime year over year in Alamogordo, New Mexico is 70%. That is a micro spike in comparison to the spike in crimes throughout the state and in rural communities throughout the U.S. in recent years. |

We are into the third quarter with Sine Die coming in nine days.
The 30-day session, which is sometimes referred to as a “budget session” since any topic not about budgetary matters has to get approval from the governor to be discussed, has so far been characterized by firearms-related bills that are part of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s public safety agenda.
The debates on these bills range from thoughtful questioning to the nonsensical: from legality questions to gross misinterpretations of what the bill actually states or aims to do. |

The state Senate on Thursday night approved a sweeping overhaul of state firearms laws, setting up talks with the House that could lead to a major new law later this spring or summer.
The Senate bill seeks to rein in untraceable ghost guns, bans carrying firearms in government administrative buildings, gives firearm licensing authorities access to some of an applicant's mental health hospitalization history, and expands the list of people who can petition the court to take away someone's guns if they are deemed dangerous. It passed the Senate on a 37-3 vote shortly after 8 p.m. |

A carrot-and-stick approach offered by Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey makes the eight-hour training class needed for a CWP free. The State Law Enforcement Division must provide the course at least twice a month in every county — more often if the demand is greater — in hopes of also making it more convenient. And it lowered the age eligibility for a CWP to 18, down from 21.
If gun owners without a CWP commit a crime involving a gun, they’d face a stiffer penalty than someone with a permit. A conviction would bring up to three additional years in prison. |
