"In what may be the first subpoena of its kind in decades, a federal judge has ordered a university to turn over records about a gathering of anti-war activists."

"In addition to the subpoena of Drake University, subpoenas were served this past week on four of the activists who attended a Nov. 15 forum at the school, ordering them to appear before a grand jury Tuesday, the protesters said."

"Federal prosecutors refuse to comment on the subpoenas."

"In addition to records about who attended the forum, the subpoena orders the university to divulge all records relating to the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, a New York-based legal activist organization that sponsored the forum."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The issues of gun violence and gun ownership both took center stage in Mount Kisco on Saturday.
Members of the group New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) came together at Mount Kisco Village Hall off Route 117 to warn that the 1994 ban on some assault weapons will expire this September unless Congress breathes new life into it. Meanwhile, a gun show took place across town at the Holiday Inn.

NYAGV members say the current assault ban does not go far enough, while gun enthusiasts at the gun show believe law-abiding citizens should be allowed to purchase certain assault weapons.

"When participants at a National Rifle Association convention were given electronic audio exams, nearly 50 percent of those tested had some level of hearing loss. The survey included a variety of shooters - young and old, casual and frequent."

" 'Even shooting a .22 rifle, which many people don't think is bad, is bad,' says audiologist Garry Gordon. His company, Environmental Acoustical Research, specializes in hearing protection products."

" 'Depending on the length of the barrel and the size of the cartridge,' Gordon said, 'the .22's noise level comes in around 140 decibels, which is approaching the threshold of pain. Eighty to 90 decibels are where hearing damage is a concern.' "

And yet, the gun banners are still insisting that the ban on sound suppressors must remain intact.

"After ricin was found in the mailroom of a Senate office building last week, hazard response teams searched Capitol offices to collect mail that was quarantined when the buildings were shut down. The fate of those letters at the end of the week was still uncertain, but congressional staffs have been told not to hold their breath -- they shouldn't expect their return. That means thousands of letters, presumably containing millions of words of persuasive advice, could be damned to the realms of the unread. Forever."

"Bruce scored a major public relations victory the other day at the opening of the legislative session. He was there for a little political activism—I would have been there, but I was busy working on the book—and one of the very few folks who showed up on behalf of the 'Citizens for a Safer Minnesota' asked him if he was carrying, and he—Bruce is very big on 'Minnesota Nice'—answered that he was, and upon request, pulled his jacket slightly back to show her where."

"She immediately summoned the capitol police, apparently expecting to see him thrown down on the ground, manhandled, and handcuffed."

"She was disappointed. The capitol police are professionals, who know that permit holders who have given proper notice to the Commissioner of Public Safety are allowed to carry in the capitol, and have been so for years, without any problem. The capitol policewoman merely came over, politely asked to see Bruce's notification letter, looked it over, smiled, handed it back to him, wished him a good day, and left, all in the view of the waiting news crews, who had been cued by the 'Citizen for a Safer Minnesota' to expect some disturbance." ...

"The combination of good intentions and success needs to be acknowledged; I offered Bruce the loan of my soapbox, and he graciously accepted."

"Hold on to your hunting cap. The MD Wildlife and Heritage Service is about to propose sweeping alterations to the deer hunting regulations."

"Assistant Director Bob Beyer points out that these proposals could change some, based upon additional in-house input as well as public meetings that will take place in March. The dates and locations of those meetings have not yet been set."

"The proposed regulations have been changed to enhance the harvest of antlerless deer in Region A and reduce the taking of bucks, thus better controlling the total number of deer and increasing the number of older bucks. Public lands will have more restrictive antlerless seasons because of intense hunting pressure they receive."

"...we know that there have been discussions of ID’s for Americans for a few years now, with the idea being pretty overwhelmingly rejected. I am ancient enough to remember those movies during and after WWII, where innocent folks on the streets of Nazi-occupied towns would be stopped by gruff jack-booted SS men, who demanded 'Papieren, bitte!' I always wondered, if some Nazi were to accost me as I left the theater, what papers I would show him. Would my brand-new drivers license do? The idea of carrying around some documents to satisfy the curiosity of officious strangers was, and is, repellent. But some sort of ID on each piece of mail I posted isn’t so bad, is it?"

"Whatever form this ID takes, it must obviously be unique to each individual. And since you never know when you might want to mail a letter, you would be advised to keep this unique identifier upon you at all times. Do you get the direction here? Once a citizen becomes accustomed to carrying his unique mail identifier with them, what’s the harm in producing it, in the name of national security, truth, justice, and the American Way!! It’s not really a national ID at all, you see, but a mail-security device. That’s OK!"

"On November 25, 2003 the California DOJ announced the seizure of a number of illegal 'assault weapons' from a Laguna Niguel gun dealer. One of the guns on display in the store was a Robinson Armament model M96 rifle. Believing this rifle to be an illegal 'assault weapon,' DOJ Firearms Division agents used the store's transaction records to locate each purchaser of the M96 rifle, then went door to door, often in the dead of night, confiscating the firearms under threat of criminal prosecution. One such raid was videotaped. No compensation was offered for the seized firearms."

"Only problem: the M96 rifle is perfectly legal and is not an 'assault weapon.' Thankfully, higher ups at the DOJ Firearms Division got involved at the urging of CRPA and others, and reversed the Agents' interpretation."

"The confiscations illustrate the difficulty in determining whether a firearm is an 'assault weapon.' Even the specialized DOJ Firearms Division's own agents, with their advanced training on the subject, couldn't tell. So, then how is the average gun owner supposed to know?" ...

"But America was not founded as a democracy. It was a constitutional republic. The whole purpose of the Constitution, James Madison wrote in Federalist #10, was to control 'the violence of faction,' by which he meant democracy. That’s why, until the Lincolnian 'Civil War Amendments' were added to it, every part of the Constitution was a prohibition of some kind of governmental power or activity. Democracy was made into a 'civil religion' by Lincoln and subsequent generations of Lincolnites who have successfully overthrown the constitutional republic of the founding fathers." ...

"Monday's City Council meeting resembled a firing range, with Pataskala City Council members and the police chief firing accusations at one another concerning the police department's purchase of submachine guns." ...

"A letter given to Fox by a former Pataskala police officer, Ken Schwart, prompted the councilman's inquiry. Schwart resigned in December, but Forshey did not publicly address the reason behind Schwart's resignation."

"The letter alleges Forshey had purchased a number of submachine guns, which no one in the department is certified to use. It also states, among other allegations, that city council approved a $20,000 police expenditure for equipment and active shooter-response training, but no sessions were held."

"But there's a couple problems with this here idea. First, the U.'s rule against people packing six-guns to class makes sense. It's worked for a good long time. If it ain't broke, why fix it?" ...

"But we think he's got the U. mixed up with the OK Corral. The perfessors have had their gun ban for pretty near onto 30 years now, and they haven't had much of a problem." ...

"THE NSW Government today defended the loss of six police guns in recent years, saying one had been recovered within days of being lost."

"Police Minister John Watkins said official documents provided to several media outlets under Freedom of Information showed six NSW police Glock handguns had been reported missing since July 1998."

" 'One was recovered in days,' Mr Watkins said in a statement."

"That's five missing guns in five-and-a-half years."

"NSW police currently has more than 16,100 firearms."

"Official documents showed lax security had almost certainly put police firearms into criminal hands, according to The Daily Telegraph."

"Ronald 'Cris' Truluck, who supported Mayor Wayne Poston during last November's mayoral election, was promoted to sergeant a month after Poston's victory. Several officers, who asked to remain anonymous, are charging that the promotion was based on politics rather than merit."

"Truluck was investigated three times last year for using excessive force, firing a gun inside Manatee High School and making inappropriate comments about a female lieutenant to other officers. He was reprimanded each time."

"EVERYONE is talking about fighting sexual crimes: how rapists should be publicly flogged, girls should be equipped with self-defence knowledge, children should be drilled on personal safety, women should be taught to dress more 'decently' as not to aggravate raging testosterones, et cetera, et cetera." ...

"Perhaps the most effective way to stop sexual crime is through education. Sure, we have conducted seminars and road shows for women and girls. We have gone to schools and colleges and taught girls basic self-defence. We have distributed pamphlets on safety to the factory workers and nurses who have to work until late at night."

-------
Yes, education is important, but the writer is correct in stating that once evil takes over there is little one can do about it. Ergo, give those vulnerable girls the best tool of self-defense on the market today - a firearm. That is what will stop a rapist cold.

"Two Norfolk men were last night facing lengthy jail terms for beating a near-helpless drug addict to death over the £30 sale of a TV and video."

"Gary Todd was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court of the murder of police officer's son Paul Massen by a majority verdict, while Simon Medeiros was unanimously convicted of his manslaughter."

"Todd, an addict himself, and Medeiros went to Mr Massen's Norwich flat to teach him a lesson after he sold a 'dodgy' TV set and video recorder which did not work."

"Mr Massen, 30, suffered a severe beating and, though Medeiros phoned for an ambulance from his mobile phone, there was little that could be done to save him."

Seems bans don't work on drugs either. When will the British (and certain Americans) learn?

"Gun control attempts to sell a faulty concept through the use of false and emotionally charged statements."

"The basic thesis of gun control is that banning guns will improve safety. This is obviously, demonstrably and logically false. Bad people do bad things and ignore laws. But secular humanists don't like to judge people as 'bad.' Thus they are locked into the logical flaw of judging objects as 'bad.' "

"So-called 'assault weapons' are a further incarnation of the idea of a 'bad' object. Self-loading firearms were invented during the last part of the 19th century. 'Assault weapons' are self-loading firearms that look 'ugly' or 'evil.' (All the laws 'define' these evil devices by listing cosmetic characteristics.)"

"A legislative committee decided Saturday to loosen a restriction on those who carry pistols or revolvers in their vehicles."

"[The bill] would allow people to have loaded handguns in vehicles without getting concealed weapons permits. The guns, however, would have to be in the trunk, glove box, or in a container too large to be hidden under a person's clothing."

"The bill initially would have repealed the existing law forbidding concealed handguns in vehicles unless people have permits for the weapons."

"David Conway, a lobbyist for the South Dakota Shooting Sports Association, which is affiliated with the NRA, offered the amendment that converted the bill."

"Connecticut state Sen. Edith Prague was so angry with Republican Gov. John G. Rowland that she refused to even attend his state of the state address last week."

"A day later, Prague was traveling on official business with a fellow Democratic lawmaker who had served from prison after his third arrest for drunken driving."

"Rowland is under fire for accepting gifts for his Litchfield cottage from friends, employees and a state contractor and later lying about it. He is the subject of a federal corruption probe and a special state House committee is investigating the governor's conduct to determine whether he has committed any impeachable offenses."

"He has not been charged with committing any crimes, or convicted. Nevertheless, Prague and many Connecticut lawmakers from both parties have called for Rowland to resign."

-------
Oh, isn't this just the height of hypocrisy. A jailbird who has endangered others' lives on at least three occasions by driving drunk gets support from fellow Democrats, while another corrupt politician, who just happens to be a Republican, gets self-righteous condemnations. Is there even one politician with any honor and integrity in that pathetic little town?

The BBC is to stage a reconstruction of the Hungerford massacre for a television documentary, despite opposition from residents and the police.

Some of the dramatised version of Michael Ryan's 1987 murder spree will be filmed in the Berkshire town this month for an hour-long programme.

It will show Ryan, 27, running amok with an automatic rifle, a pistol and a hand grenade, shooting 16 people dead and wounding 16, before killing himself.

Thames Valley Police have voiced their disappointment with the project, however, and many residents have condemned it as insensitive.

-------
So do you suppose the BBC will mention that if self-defense were not outlawed in the UK and one sane person had been carrying a gun that day they could have saved some of those 16 dead?

"Inter Press Service (IPS) reports from Caracas that members of the Venezuelan National Guard (GN) have been accused of seizing a 14-year-old boy in a rural hamlet, hanging him naked from a tree, beating him with a stick, placing a pistol in his mouth and threatening to cut off his testicles if he did not provide the names of those helping kidnappers."

"According to complaints filed with the regional branch of the public prosecutor's office by family members of the victims, the young campesino, or peasant farmer, in the southeastern region of Guayana was one of 12 victims allegedly tortured by the GN's militarized police in six hamlets in the area between December 29 and January 4 as the agents searched for the kidnappers of two businessmen." ...

"Accusations that the security forces in Venezuela torture alleged suspects are not new, nor are allegations that they frequently commit extrajudicial executions -- PROVEA, a prominent Venezuelan rights group, received complaints of 165 extrajudicial executions reportedly committed by the security forces between October 2002 and September 2003."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775].
