As I had expected, the ruling went against us on procedural grounds; the court refused to strike down the laws in question because the plaintiffs had not been prosecuted under those laws -- they had filed suit prior to any enforcement action on the basis of their declared intent."

"Any discussion of gun control usually provokes strong feelings on both sides of the issue, and both sides can marshal compelling arguments to support their views. One thing both sides agree on, however, is that guns are dangerous. Las Vegas police are calling the shooting by a homeowner of a former roommate a case of self-defense.
Police say the former roommate was wielding a knife when he was shot once in the chest with a high-powered rifle about six-30 this morning at a mobile home (near Craig Road and Rancho Drive) in the city's northwest.
The wounded man's badly wounded and in critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital.
Reports are that he and the homeowner had been feuding for days. |

A 14-year-old student shot a classmate in the leg at a high school outside Mexico's capital on Monday -- a rare incident of school gun play in a country whose firearms possession law are tougher than in the United States.
Police said a student identified only as Joseph apparently mistakenly fired a pistol and hit another 14-year-old, Brenda Cristina, in Nezahualcoyotl, on Mexico City's outskirts. The victim was hospitalized with a potentially life-threatening wound to the leg, Jorge Amador, the city's director of public safety, said in a phone interview.

A 21-year-old Marine shot himself in the thigh Tuesday afternoon at Ricky's Gun Service Sales and Indoor Pistol Range, Beaufort police said.
Lyquin J. Broadus, who is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, was in the firing range when he lowered his gun and shot himself with a semi-automatic pistol, Sgt. David Ott said.
"He thought he had the safety on, but it wasn't," Ott said, adding that it appeared to be an accident.
Broadus was stable at Beaufort Memorial Hospital late Tuesday afternoon, police said.
"It was unsafe handling of a firearm, plain and simple," Ott said. "Anytime you're shooting a firearm, the gun should always be treated as loaded." |
