What stops a criminal from bringing a gun into a sensitive place, a so-called "gun-free" zone?
The way a politician answers that question tells us a lot, and probably more than they want us to know. Why would politicians propose more gun-free zones when the old ones didn't work?

On Thursday the Nebraska Legislature’s Judiciary Committee heard testimony on a proposal that would allow the use of force to defend yourself or someone else from serious harm without the “duty to retreat”—that is, the requirement for you to first try to leave the situation and go to safety, if possible.
It would also give you immunity from prosecution for using that justifiable force.
“I’ll address the first point of the bill removing the duty to retreat from our state laws,” said Sen. Brian Hardin, who proposed the bill. “Bills similar to this are often referred to as stand your ground laws.” |

Some Nebraska lawmakers want to enhance Nebraska's self-defense laws.
"I believe in the principle that all individuals have the inherent right to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm," said state Sen. Brian Hardin from Scottsbluff.
He's proposed Legislative Bill 1269, which gives Nebraska a "Stand Your Ground" law. Hardin said it would line Nebraska up with 38 other states, including all surrounding states, that have case law or written laws that support Stand Your Ground rights. |

In its judgment, the Hawaii Supreme Court said the Second Amendment uses "military-tinged language – 'well regulated militia' and 'bear arms' - to limit the use of deadly weapons to a military purpose."
The court said: "In contrast, there are no words that mention a personal right to possess lethal weapons in public places for possible self-defense.
Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Kostas Moore [sic], an attorney who works with the California Rifle & Pistol Association, opposed this view. He wrote: "Hawaii's Supreme Court rehashes tired collective right arguments which the Supreme Court has expressly rejected, and overwhelming amounts of historical evidence confirm to be false."

There may be no tenet of faith so fundamental to the cult of gun control than the idea that more guns equate to more crime — a theory that was soundly disproven in 2023.
Just four years after the biggest recorded one-year spike in our nation’s homicide rate, it looks as if the United States may have just gone through the biggest one-year decline, an impossibility according to gun control activists.
There are millions more guns around than there were four years ago, yet the vast majority of cities reported fewer homicides than they did in 2020. |

The Hawaii Supreme Court thinks all of those cases were wrongly decided. In a ruling issued on Wednesday, the court sides with the Heller dissenters by embracing the view that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms"—unlike "the right of the people peaceably to assemble" (protected by the First Amendment), "the right of the people" to be secure from "unreasonable searches and seizures" (protected by the Fourth Amendment), and the unspecified rights "retained by the people" under the Ninth Amendment—does not guarantee any individual rights. Rather, the Hawaii Supreme Court says, the Second Amendment refers to a "collective right" that is relevant only in the context of militia service. |

Hawaii’s Supreme Court refused to follow U.S. Supreme Court precedent on gun rights in an opinion released on Wednesday, declaring that “the spirit of Aloha clashes” with the Second Amendment, which guarantees Americans an individual right to bear arms.
The declaration was made in a decision ruling that a man charged with carrying a firearm without a permit in the state back in 2017 could still be held criminally for that infraction despite a recent Supreme Court decision, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, that ruled that New York’s concealed-carry application system was unconstitutional. |

Michigan's new safe storage law goes into effect Tuesday, requiring unattended firearms to be unloaded and locked up if minors are on the property. It comes in direct response to the Oxford High School shooting.
"My hope is we won't see more Crumbley situations, because you won't have minors that have that kind of access to deadly weapons anymore. Not without parental supervision," Attorney General Dana Nessel said Wednesday.

The court’s Wednesday ruling rejected three landmark Second Amendment Supreme Court decisions — New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, McDonald v. City of Chicago and District of Columbia v. The Biden administration continues to attack our rights, with the ATF now attempting effectively to ban private gun sales. The ATF has proposed a rule requiring background checks even for private gun sales.
Conservative attorney Michele Maples told KTRH, this rule is redundant and likely won't survive a court challenge even if it does get approved.

The Hawai’i Constitution doesn’t recognize a right to bear arms in public, the Hawai’i Supreme Court said, criticizing the reasoning used by the US Supreme Court to recognize the right in the Second Amendment.
In its Second Amendment cases, the US Supreme Court “distorts and cherry-picks historical evidence. It shrinks, alters, and discards historical facts that don’t fit,” the Hawai’i Supreme Court said. “Time-traveling to 1791 or 1868 to collar how a state regulates lethal weapons—per the Constitution’s democratic design—is a dangerous way to look at the federal constitution.” |

On Thursday, February 1st, the Senate passed S.2572 late in the night without the bill ever receiving a public hearing, ignoring the concerns of Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and second amendment advocates across the state. The bill will now advance to joint committee, where the House and Senate will work to streamline this omnibus of the nation’s worst gun control policies.
S. 2572 is the Senate’s version of HD 4420, which was passed in the House late last year. Much like the House version, this bill attempts to implement some of the strictest gun-control in the country. |

It seems as if Hawaii is going out of its way to demonstrate the utter contempt with which blue cities hold our constitutional rights.
Specifically, the Hawaii Supreme Court has decided that the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which grants American citizens the right to bear arms, must take a back seat to the island state’s “spirit of Aloha.”
No, this isn’t a mediocre SNL skit — this is Hawaii’s reasoning for denying a man his Second Amendment rights. |

Following a string of freeway shootings in the Seattle area along Interstates 5 and 90 and at least one state highway, the head of one of the nation’s most active gun rights organizations, coincidentally based in the area, said the rash of gun-related crimes underscores the failure of increasingly restrictive Evergreen State gun control laws.
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, described what he believes are several factors which may be at work. The Georgia Senate voted 30-22 to approve a five-day sales tax holiday for guns and ammo in October before deer hunting season. The bill, approved Tuesday, Feb. 6, now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
During this type of holiday, a state exempts some purchases from sales tax. For example, some states hold a sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping so parents can purchase school supplies tax-free. |
