"The Solicitor General of the United States, Paul D. Clement, is the chief lawyer for the Justice Department. On January 11, Clement dropped a bomb designed to destroy the Second Amendment."
"The bomb was a friend of the court brief that is a marvelous work of Newspeak as described by George Orwell in his novel of a horrifying future where words mean the opposite of their original definitions."
"On one hand, the brief argues that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms that predated the creation of the U.S. government by the people. On the other hand, it concludes that any and all guns can be controlled or banned if a federal court finds that to be reasonable." ... |

"To those of us who are so aptly called 'people of the cloth' look at the increase in gun violence with absolute distain, and we are powerless to stop it."
"The gun incidents of the past few weeks more than ever demonstrate that America has become a nation at war with itself and that war has extended itself down to our very children."
"Of course we are being told that more guns will make us safer ..."
"The discredited John Lott tried to convince us that 98% of all crime would fall away if we just carried guns. He did not say specifically what crimes would fade away, but we can see his theory is just this side of lunatic fringe." ... |

"With judicial review of the Washington D.C. gun ban pending before the U.S. Supreme Court, amicus briefs are being submitted to illustrate that not only is the ban unconstitutional, it's simply a bad idea. (Ignoring for a moment the ultimate reason for the Second Amendment: defense against an oppressive government, whether foreign or domestic)."

... "Next month, the Supreme Court is going to take a look at the District of Columbia's ban on handgun ownership. The argument at hand is basically, as it has been for years, whether or not the Second Amendment's guarantee to 'keep and bear arms' is an individual or a collective right."
"I've been around firearms all my life and there are many ways I could approach this, but I'll deal with it from the perspective I've come to consider the most important - that of being a father."
"I'll explain."
"I was raised with the old-fashioned notion that this title carries several very specific responsibilities. One of them is that I am my family’s first line of defense in any tough situation ..." ... -------

"A story by Stateline.org today notes that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo joined four other AGs ... in siding with the District of Columbia in a case set to be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court March 18. That compares with 31 AGs who are urging the court to strike down the district's longstanding ban on handguns."
"But Cuomo and his colleagues stress they aren't for a D.C.-style ban. In an amici (friend of the court) brief, they maintain that the Second Amendment was designed to insure that the federal government could not dismantle state militias, and they urge the court not to tinker with a state's right to make its own gun laws. But they’re also careful to say they're not against people owning guns:" ... |

A deadly shootout between burglars and a homeowner took place Thursday night, just after 9 p.m., on Tucson's east side, near I-10 and Wilmot Road.
Police say three men busted into a home in a quiet new neighborhood. They then shot the homeowner in the arm; the homeowner returned fire and hit one of the burglars, who later died at a local hospital. According to Tucson police, when they arrived, the 29 year-old home owner and his two year-old daughter had taken refuge in a bathroom. The home owner suffered minor injuries and the little girl was not hurt.
Police are looking for two suspects, but have not released a description. Investigators say they do not know what the relationship is between the home owner and the suspects. |

"My buddy Cam finds two interesting comments from Obama and his people regarding the Second Amendment."
"Responding to criticism that Obama has since changed his position on gun control, his campaign declares that 'Obama has been consistent.'"
"In another article, it states, 'Obama also said he no longer supported broad licensing and registering of firearms, as he did when he was in the Illinois Senate.'"
"Cam and I discussed this last night. Obama says he supports the Second Amendment, but didn't sign an amicus brief that opposed the D.C. gun ban. ..."
"Ironically, those who support gun control are concluding that Obama is turning into a sellout on this issue." |

A bill that would specify that government officials in Wyoming can't confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens during disasters or other emergencies passed for the second time in the state senate on Thursday.
Sen. Kit Jennings, R-Casper, carried the bill. He said it's in response to the police confiscation of guns from citizens of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
Jennings says that while citizens in Wyoming may not believe that their government would ever try to take their guns, that's also what people thought in New Orleans. |

Ocean City police have obtained an arrest warrant for a deputy sheriff from Virginia in connection with an alleged rape.
Police say 31-year-old Zachary Taylor of Ruther Glen, Va., met a 22-year-old woman Sunday at a night club. Taylor is accused of taking the intoxicated woman to his hotel room, raping her, then leaving her in an elevator.
According to police, a hotel worker found the woman in the lobby, crying uncontrollably. Authorities say bystanders at the hotel identified Taylor as the suspect.
A spokesman at the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office says Taylor has been placed on administrative leave.
Taylor is charged with second-degree rape and was expected to surrender to Ocean City police Thursday. |

"In response to the writer of 'Shooter not in 'a well regulated militia' ' (Feb. 21, Letters): If you read a little further, the Second Amendment of the Constitution also states, 'the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' The Constitution was written to restrain the government, not the people. We are granted our rights by our creator, not our government. If we outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have the guns and that will do no one good. We should not give up our God-given rights while ignoring the fact that ... Northern Illinois State University ... was a victim disarmament zone ..." |

The writer of "Shooter not in 'a well regulated militia' " (Feb. 21, Letters), like many liberals, claims a citizen does not have a constitutional right to own a firearm. They like to put all of the emphasis on "a well regulated militia" and ignore "the right of the People ... shall not be infringed." It doesn't make any sense to put such language in The Bill of Rights if it was written for state and government militias.
