Looking Ahead Following a Big Senate Win

"In their e-mail letter encouraging senators to scuttle the bill, LaPierre and Cox wrote that 'we have said from the start that we will not allow this bill to become a vehicle for added restrictions on the law-abiding people of America.' They also warned that senators' votes on the bill that they were now recommending for defeat 'will be used in our future evaluations and endorsements of candidates for the U.S. Senate.' (A copy of the NRA's letter to senators is at www.csgv.org.)"

"According to Kristen Rand, legislative director for the Violence Policy Center, the NRA's plan was to simply strip the amendments, either in conference committee or back in the House, and then bring back a 'clean' immunity bill for another vote at a later date. 'But you started to see all this e-mail traffic from the far right,' she says, 'and clearly they either weren't understanding the strategy or they weren't acquiescing to the strategy. And they all started agitating to kill it.' "

-------
Yeah, "the far right" didn't understand the strategy - the same strategy that failed 10 years ago and allowed the AW ban to become law.

"The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence this morning delivered a letter to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, arguing that House members Don Young and Barbara Cubin used their legislative powers to further the financial interests of the National Rifle Association, which they serve as members of the Board."

"According to the Brady Campaign's letter requesting an inquiry by the Committee, the conflict of interest arises from the active support by Representatives Young (A-AK) and Cubin (R-WY) of H.R. 1036, a bill that would provide broad immunity from civil litigation to gun manufacturers, dealers and trade associations. As a 'trade association,' as defined in the bill, the NRA would benefit from the legislation. Last week the Brady Campaign noted a similar conflict of interest in a complaint filed with the Senate Ethics Committee against Senator Larry Craig (R-Id.), the floor leader for a similar bill in the Senate."

"A gun control group is calling for a House Ethics inquiry into National Rifle Association board members who co-sponsored a bill to give NRA civil immunity."

"The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence delivered a letter to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, accusing House members Don Young (R-Alaska) and Barbara Cubin (R-W.V.) of using their legislative powers to further the financial interests of the NRA, which they serve as members of the board." ...

"According to House ethics rules, members are prohibited from using their legislative powers to further the financial interests of organizations with which they are affiliated."

How about using their legislative powers to represent the interests of millions of citizens - people whom they are supposed to represent in the House?

"Take gun control. Can you imagine Landrieu justifying to her party's purists her recent vote against renewing the ban on assault weapons, a measure that Kerry left the campaign trail on Super Tuesday to vote for? Can you imagine her debating the issue with Dick Cheney? Whose position would she defend, Kerry's or her own?"

"Are you lonely? Do you crave attention from passionate and devoted respondents? Would you like to receive letters, e-mails and phone calls by the hundreds, so many that you pine for that lonely old life you used to know?"

"Well, here's the answer: Write something favorable about gun control. Lament how easy it still is to buy semi-automatic assault weapons such as the one used in the Washington, D.C., sniper case by John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo. Get your hand-wringing piece published in the newspaper."

And don't forget to infuse your hanky-wringing spew with lies, propaganda and misinformation. But at least we now understand why Mr. Vitello wrote his piece. For the record, there are definitely better and more intelligent ways to get attention.

"An unemployed man who killed his next-door neighbour with a 2ft sword during a row about noise was jailed for life today after being convicted of murder."

"Melvin Sullivan, 45, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, thrust the sword – which could also be used as a bayonet – through Michael Bailey’s body from side to side during the incident in June 2003."

"The blade went between the 28-year-old mechanic’s ribs and through his chest muscles to within half a centimetre of the skin on the other side of his body, Norwich Crown Court heard during a week-long trial."

"Mr Bailey, a talented stock car racer, died almost immediately after the sword 'wreaked terrible damage' to his lungs and heart, jurors were told."

"A wife killer scheduled to be sentenced today so outraged people when he lied on the witness stand at his trial last year that an Anchorage legislator is taking steps to make sure future juries know if a defendant changes his story just for them."

"The state House of Representatives last week approved a change in court rules that will allow defendant statements, even if obtained illegally, to be used during trial if the defendant takes the stand and tells a different story."

"The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ralph Samuels, R-Anchorage, also allows other illegally obtained evidence to be used to impeach a defendant, meaning the prosecution can use it to suggest he lied during his testimony."

"In both cases, prosecutors must first prove to a judge that the statements were not coerced and the evidence was 'not obtained in substantial violation' of a defendant's rights."

"The Los Angeles Times wrote in a March 4 editorial decrying the defeat of S. 1805 and its poison-pill amendments wrote, 'If the 10-year-old assault gun ban expires in September, look for Uzis at a gun store near you, weapons capable of taking out an entire schoolyard or the morning line of caffeine hounds at Starbucks.' "

"While Schumer is partly correct - many of the banned guns are modeled on military designs - the Times is completely over the top. The banned firearms are semi-automatics, not the submachine guns most people envision when they read 'Uzi.' The banned guns are no more deadly than many firearms used by hunters. Are those next to be forbidden?"

"Another senator speaking in favor of the ban said the extension was necessary because it had kept such firearms out of the hands of criminals, but hadn't affected responsible gun owners. He said no sportsmen had been denied the firearms they needed for their pursuits and that the banned semi-automatics had no legitimate uses and were useful only to criminals. That's misinformation used by supporters of the ban as though it's true, but it's not."

"What if a mayor actually looked at the Constitution and read the words of the Second Amendment, which say 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,' came to the conclusion that the right to keep and bear arms could not be infringed by any state law, and then started issuing concealed weapon permits? Do you think Lockyer would first say he would only defend state agencies sued as a result of the mayor’s actions, then call anyone who wanted him to act 'radical,' and then say he would consult with the Supreme Court as to the meaning of the law-all while doing nothing? Of course not."

"Most democracies, Haiti included, have clauses that deal with the issue of how civilians can or when they can overthrow the government. The second amendment is a good example of that, keeping an armed citizenry in case of tyranny by the government. But even in the U.S. that is a last resort position, and the tried, true, and preferred way of removing inept government is through the ballot box. The problem with Haiti, is that the ballot box was not given the opportunity to do just that."

What John Kerry Should Say About "God, Gays and Guns"

"Finally, guns and gun ownership continue to be an emotional, volatile issue. I hunt and I understand our tradition of gun ownership in America. But using the gun issue, as this administration does, to divide citizens, rather than looking at ways to reduce gun violence and ensuring the safety of our children is, frankly, irresponsible."

"Sportsmen, hunters and gun owners have nothing to fear about gun ownership in a Kerry administration. There is nothing to fear about creating a national climate where reducing gun death and injury is compatible with the interests of hunters and gun owners. Preying on the emotional sensitivity of this issue won't accomplish this goal, but honesty and straight talk will. I know that gun owners, from my personal experience as a hunter, are as concerned about the well-being of our communities as I am."

"There is no need to continue to play a game of divide and conquer on the gun issue or on the issue of gender preference. There is no need to continue to play a game of trying to prove that one party or the other is closer to God."

-------
What he should also add is, "I realize I've taken the 'sporting' and 'hunting' concept directly out of the Nazi playbook, but if it gets me uninformed Fuddites' votes, all the better!"

"The bill would impose fines up to $5 million for any police or other government agency that continues to maintain such a database."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

"Repeal Conceal," an initiative seeking repeal of Minnesota's concealed-carry handgun law, is being headed by former Vice President Walter Mondale and former Gov. Arne Carlson, the Associated Press reported March 4.

The law allows most law-abiding, mentally competent residents who take a firearms-safety class to obtain a permit. Previously, permits were issued only to those who showed a need for a gun for work or personal safety.

Mondale and Carlson said the law is bad public policy because it removes the discretion of local police in issuing permits and gives residents a false sense of safety.

"Gun control advocates had the support of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Major Cities Chiefs of Police organization, and 200 sheriffs and police chiefs. A big lift came from Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who said he was persuaded by the law enforcement community, which cited statistics showing crimes attributed to assault weapons dropped 66 percent as a result of the ban."

-------
Perhaps while the NRA did jump on the "kill the bill" bandwagon at the last minute, the gun owners and Second Amendment advocates who wrote and called their Senators had more to do with the death of more gun control.

And while the gun banners like to brag that they have some police bureaucrats on their side, we'd be willing to bet that law abiding gun owners and freedom advocates represent a much bigger, more powerful group.

"One man parked on the side of the road in Humboldt County, Nevada, in May 2000 was brave enough to say no to a police officer when ordered to identify himself."

"The officer 'just walked up and started demanding my papers,' Larry Hiibel told Associated Press. 'I was there on that road minding my own business.' "

"He refused and, as a result, was arrested. Now Hiibel may end up redefining our ability to move in public without having every aspect of our lives investigated at the whim of the police."

"Such a redefinition is sorely needed. Under current precedent, being ordered to give your name to a police officer, if you are stopped under reasonable suspicion of being involved in a crime, is generally considered a reasonable and minimal intrusion on your privacy and dignity. When the Supreme Court hears the case of Hiibel vs. 6th Judicial District Court, it must consider how the practical consequences of identifying yourself to a police officer have changed given the rise of a seemingly endless number of computerized databases."

"No one opened his or her door — not even at the apartment the man was going to visit when he was gunned down Sunday morning."

"One tenant explained that, although the victim had pleaded he was dying, 'we heard him say he had been shot, so we didn't call (the police).' "

"That attitude must change, radically, if Toronto is to defeat the violence that has taken 12 lives so far this year."

-------
So how is registering gun owners and gradually disarming the populace going to change this attitude?

"Patrick Mercer, the Tory home security spokesman, prompted widespread controversy during a fringe speech to party members last weekend when he also claimed the ban on handguns, introduced after the Dunblane massacre, had 'no effect' on spiralling gun crime."

"Yesterday, his comments were condemned by anti-gun groups and politicians who joined in calls on the Tory leader, Michael Howard, to sack the MP from the front bench."

"Mothers Against Murder and Aggression spokeswoman Dee Warner said that Mr Mercer’s comments were 'crass' and 'appalling'."

Yeah, we can't have a legislator telling the truth about tyranny, now can we?

"One wonders when this madness will end. The first state to criminalize cell phone use was New York in 2001. A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows their ban isn't working, but no bother: It's nothing a little 'publicized enforcement' can't fix. Assemblyman Felix Ortiz is looking to set-up a hotline whereby folks can report fellow drivers caught talking on the phone. How can do-gooders make the call without being called out themselves? Hey, that's beside the point! And who cares if half the calls are erroneous? Fines go as high as $200. The more, the merrier."

"We Americans take much for granted, and way too much on faith and trust in those we have supposedly placed in official positions. We somehow have come to believe those people meant to serve us (civil servants, one and all whether the President or the janitor in your local city hall) have our best interests and security at heart, no matter how many people such as Thomas Sowell, our founders, political philosophers, and the like tell us otherwise."

"Two gun-control bills being considered by the legislature's Judiciary Committee won support Monday from a bipartisan group of lawmakers and the Police Chiefs Association."

"One bill would require any lost or stolen handgun be reported to police within 72 hours, while the other bill would require stores that sell "long guns" to obtain a state permit."

"More than 1.7 million stolen guns have fallen into criminal hands over the last 10 years, lawmakers said."

" 'With increased gun crime rates and easy access to firearms, it is imperative that we control the sale of guns by possession of a permit and require persons to report theft or loss to the police,' said state Rep. Michael Lawlor, D-East Haven, co-chairman of the Judiciary Committee."

"The United States military is about to add a new, exotic weapon to its already impressive arsenal in Iraq."

"But in contrast to other armaments, this one does not shoot or explode, it screams and hollers."

"A defence contractor announced it had secured a $US1 million deal to supply the First US Marine Expeditionary Force, slated to rotate into Iraq later this month, with a so-called Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD."

-------
In layman's terms, it is supplying the military with a giant loudspeaker that seems to borrow some of its technology from modern pest-control devices that shoo away mice and other pesky critters with the help of ultrasound.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. — Alexander Tyler (in his 1770 book, Cycle of Democracy)
