"They are not interested in buying or using the product, yet they are condemned by the manufacturers to pay an increasingly heavy price, say human rights and peace activists about the millions of women who are suffering from the death and grief caused by the multi-billion-dollar trade in illegal guns." ...

" 'Gun violence against women is happening around the world,' says Saira Rees-Roberts of Amnesty International. ..."

"Rejecting the notion that guns are necessary for personal protection, she cites the report's finding that in the United States, a gun in the home increases the risk that someone in the household will be murdered by 41 percent. ..."

-------
Never mind that this statistic has been thoroughly discredited. According to Gun Facts version 3.3, "Kellerman admits that his study did 'not include cases in which burglars or intruders are wounded or frightened away by the use or display of a firearm.' He also admitted his study did not look at situations in which intruders 'purposely avoided a home known to be armed.' This is a classic case of a 'study' conducted to achieve a desired result. In his critique of this 'study', Gary Kleck notes that the estimation of gun ownership rates were 'inaccurate' , and that the total population came from a non-random selection of only two cities."

"Warnings about terror suspects' easy access to combat rifles grew after 9/11 when it was disclosed that John Ashcroft, a gun rights zealot who was attorney general at the time, had blocked federal agents from matching gun-purchase records against the growing list of thousands of terror suspects. The privacy rights of innocent gun purchasers were deemed paramount in the national emergency. ..."

"The alarming ease with which terror suspects can buy high-powered weapons on Main Street was disclosed by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress. This is an irony in itself since the Republican-controlled Congress declined last year to renew the 10-year-old assault rifle ban, which had helped keep battlefield weapons out of the hands of mayhem-minded citizens."

"A judge presiding over a high school senior's bid to have his gun in his yearbook portrait congratulated the student for bringing the case forward but said Wednesday he had little chance of prevailing. 'I'm awful proud of you for bringing the case. You stood up for your First Amendment rights,' U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe told Blake Douglass at the trial's end. 'If it doesn't go well for you, I want you to know you did the right thing.' "

"Thank goodness the Arizona Senate is looking out for folks like you and me. A bill was passed last week in the Senate that would allow you to carry a loaded gun into a bar or restaurant that serves alcohol legally. Unfortunately, the Senate has decreed if you do bring a weapon you can't actually have a drink, but I figure that's a small price to pay in order to be armed." ...

"It's too bad the Arizona House shelved another gun bill last week by Republican Doug Quelland that would have allowed people to carry guns into schools, polling places and nuclear power plants, legally. Because seriously, if there is anything cooler than bringing a gun to a bar, it has to be bringing one to a nuclear power plant."

"Don't worry though, liberals can't stand in the way of progress forever. As soon as guns are allowed in bars, Quelland's dreams of guns in schools can't be far behind."
