In their words, Bush and Kerry on the issues

Bush: "Mandatory background checks through the instant check system are essential for keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and other prohibited persons. We have improved the rate of immediate decisions for background checks from 71 percent to 91 percent, and with my administration's support, Congress recently required that records for approved gun transactions through the instant check system be destroyed within 24 hours. I support reauthorizing the current ban on semiautomatic assault weapons. We are providing funding for child safety locks for handgun owners through the Justice Department's Project ChildSafe program. Finally, we support legislation that would prohibit firearms manufacturers or sellers from being held liable for the criminal or unlawful misuse of their product by others. This legislation would help curb frivolous litigation."

Kerry: "I am a gun owner and hunter, and I believe that law-abiding American adults have the right to own guns. But like all of our rights, gun rights come with responsibilities, and those rights allow for reasonable restrictions to keep guns out of the wrong hands. I strongly support all of the federal gun laws on the books, and I would take steps to ensure that they are vigorously enforced. I will also close the gun show loophole, which is allowing criminals to get access to guns at gun shows without background checks, fix the background check system, which is in a serious state of disrepair, and require that all handguns be sold with a child safety lock."

So, Bush supporters. You still think he's going to protect your Second Amendment rights?

Q: Mr. Speaker, do you anticipate the assault weapons ban renewal? It expires in September.

Speaker Hastert: The Senate was going to go through the bill first. It kind of fell away over in the Senate. I am not sure what is going to happen.

Translation: Don't rely on Republicans to fight too hard to protect the Second Amendment.

"Republican U.S. Senate nominee Bill Jones assailed Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer on jobs, the military, guns, abortion and oil drilling on Wednesday as he formally launched his campaign to oust her." ...

"A staunch opponent of gun control, Jones declined to take a position on the Senate proposal to shield gun makers and sellers from lawsuits related to gun violence. But he contrasted Boxer's support for gun control to his backing of legislation to crack down on violent crime, including the three-strikes sentencing law that he wrote in the Legislature."

Is Military Creeping Into Domestic Law Enforcement?

"IN A LITTLE-NOTICED side effect of the war on terrorism, the military is edging toward a sensitive area that has been off-limits to it historically: domestic intelligence gathering and law enforcement."

"Several recent incidents involving the military have raised concern among student and civil-rights groups. One was a visit last month by an Army intelligence agent to an official at the University of Texas law school in Austin. The agent demanded a videotape of a recent academic conference at the school so that he could identify what he described as 'three Middle Eastern men' who had made 'suspicious' remarks to Army lawyers at the seminar, according to the official, Susana Aleman, the dean of student affairs."

"Victims of domestic violence often don't get adequate protection from the criminal justice system when their abuser has a gun, advocates said Wednesday."

"A gun control group and a domestic violence center claim many women are slipping through the cracks because judges and police officers don't pay enough attention to the risks a gun poses in a volatile domestic violence case."

"Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., said Wednesday that the failure of officials to follow through on gun restrictions show 'how difficult it is to get real protection out of a protective order.' "

"Clinton joined the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation and the National Network Against Domestic Violence, which are trying to pressure local, state, and federal authorities to strictly enforce the gun restrictions on protective orders."

Have you ever read that much absurdity in one story? Hey, Hill! A man who is willing to beat the snot out of his spouse will not be deterred by a piece of paper. What will deter him is a well-placed bullet. But we don't suppose you care to make it easier for the woman to protect herself against an abuser, do you?

Guns and Violence

"Many educators and criminologists assert that we must lay the blame for gun violence where it belongs: An increasingly permissive culture that for many years has been mired in political correctness and where public schools no longer teach traditional morality and the discernment between right and wrong, leading to situational ethics and moral relativism. To the detriment of children, building self-esteem has been placed ahead of personal morality and teaching them to distinguish between right and wrong. There is also lack of discipline at home and in schools because parents and teachers are afraid of reprimanding the young for fear of being denounced by social workers, charged with child abuse, and prosecuted by the state."

"Editors at the Cincinnati Enquirer seem to comprehend the problems facing their city. Gun control and Ohio's concealed carry ban has done nothing to deter criminals from using guns to commit crimes. "The Judiciary Committee of the state House of Representatives endorsed a bill that would force sellers of 'long guns,' or guns with barrels sixteen inches and longer, to endure the same permit process that sellers of handguns must undergo."

"Taped conversations between a fund-raiser for the state Democratic Party and a Middlesex County farmer who made a $10,000 contribution have emerged as a key piece of evidence in a federal corruption probe that has reached into the McGreevey administration, two sources familiar with the investigation said."

"One of the sources said the fund-raiser, David D'Amiano, solicited the $10,000 donation from Mark Halper and promised to use his influence to help Halper settle a long-standing dispute over the fate of his property, the last farm in Piscataway Township." ...

"Since last week, D'Amiano has been the subject of subpoenas to the office of Gov. James E. McGreevey and other state agencies, part of an inquiry into whether favors have been traded for campaign contributions."

"The investigation has led the governor's office, high-ranking former state officials and Democratic Party officials to retain lawyers from outside the administration, sources said."

"People on both sides of the gun debate are keeping a close eye on proposals in Springfield that would exempt gun owners like Wilmette's Hale DeMar from local gun laws when they use a weapon in self-defense."

"Gun rights supporters say those bills would temper local gun bans with common sense to prevent homeowners from being punished in cases of self-defense. Village officials say the measures, if passed, threaten the ability of local governments to maintain their own gun laws."

"Senate Bill 2165 and a companion bill in the House of Representatives, HB 4075, are scheduled for a third reading and final vote sometime after lawmakers return to Springfield March 23."

"Two Bush administration agencies are considering new rules that could prevent the Drug Policy Alliance and other advocacy groups from contacting their supporters about the political actions of federal officials who are up for re-election. Communications just like this one could be banned!"

"The Federal Elections Commission (FEC) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) proposals could provide members of Congress with a green light to introduce and pass harmful drug policies while they are up for re-election. The proposals could make it against the law for the Alliance to run advertisements in a newspaper or send out email alerts like this one to try and stop harmful policies. Together, these proposals represent one of the worst assaults on the freedom of speech and association ever proposed in the United States."

"Americans who order fast food would have to hold the lawsuits under a bill passed by the House Wednesday."

"The 'cheeseburger bill,' approved 276 to 139, would prohibit people who are battling the bulge from going to court in an attempt to finger the food industry for their weight problems. Proponents of the measure said the fed-up well-fed would do better to look in the mirror for the cause of their trouble."

A police officer was found guilty of attempted assault and criminal weapons possession for apparently swinging an object at a handcuffed suspect.

Charles Dorcent, an eight-year veteran of the city police department assigned to the 70th precinct, was charged after a videotape surfaced of an Aug. 11 incident in which he arrested a man on a Brooklyn street while breaking up a fight.

He contends he swung a radio at Anthony Carty, 26, in self defense when the suspect lunged at him. But Assistant District Attorney Charles Guria had argued Dorcent acted out of anger.

After the incident, he was assigned to desk duty while he awaited trial.

The attempted assault charge, is a felony, which will cause Dorcent to lose his job.

But he could also face a year and a half in jail when he is sentenced April 20.

Where is the sentence enhancement for "possession of a gun" during a felony?!? Isn't that what Project Safe Neighborhoods and its unholy spawn in each of the states advocate?

But in the big picture, Rush, you're losing the culture war, and I just wonder, do you ever at night think about that?

RUSH: No. Of course not. I never think we're losing anything. Because we're not.

CALLER: Well, Rush, you know, when you can't even stop a mayor from breaking the law to give out marriage licenses to people, I'm not sure that you're looking at the big picture. Every year gun control gets stricter and stricter and every year the taxation of this country goes from the middle class on up into the wealthy and pretty soon this country is going to be just another socialist country and you're losing the culture war, Rush. ...

RUSH: There are people who think it's a socialist country today.

"The key to your safety is being prepared. If all the attacker wants is your wallet or your purse, give it to him, Patire advices. Do not risk your life trying to defend a material possession. However, if after he rifles through your purse, he wants you to come with him, it's time to protect yourself."

"Many people - women in particular - decide that they will protect themselves by carrying pepper spray, buying a personal sound alarm or learning how to use their car keys as a weapon. But Patire says he has learned by surveying people who attend his seminars that in a true crisis, these devices seldom work. For instance, most women keep the pepper spray on their key chain. If your keys are in your purse and the thief takes your purse, you're out of luck. If your keys are in the laundry room and you are being attacked in your bedroom, you are out of luck. Plus, did you know that pepper spray expires? Did you know that those personal alarms (pull a pin and they emit a LOUD noise) run on batteries? And he notes, if you're not trained in self-defense, these tools could be used against you."

Two Palestinian teenagers Thursday got into a taxi in Beer Sheba, stabbed its driver, but were caught before they could flee.

The Palestinians, from Daharia in the southern West Bank, told investigators they have become devoutly religious and decided to hit a soldier, seize his weapon, and launch an attack.

They took a taxi and stabbed the driver when he asked for the fare, seriously wounding the 50-year-old man, Ha'aretz said.

A career army man heard the driver's screams, drew his pistol, ran over and made the attackers get out and lie on the ground until police came.

It is the second attack from the southern West Bank in recent weeks. There is no security fence in the desert area.

"At about 8:45 last night, Krol and his partner responded to an armed robbery call. As they drove up to the store, two gunmen were fleeing the scene, witnesses said."

"The men turned left on 19th Street, said witnesses, with Krol and his partner hot on their trail."

"Behind Krol was the owner of the grocery, a man neighbors called 'Freddy,' running down the street blazing a semiautomatic pistol."

"Police at the scene said the storeowner had a license to own the weapon."

"Then dozens of shots rang out, residents said."

"Police said at least two cops fired their guns and sources at the scene said the store-owner fired his Tec-9 pistol as well."

"A Delhi Court today observed that there was sufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges against then Police Sub Inspector D P Singh for killing Aditya Narayan on September 25, 1990 during the height of nation-wide anti-Mandal agitation."

"Metropolitan Magistrate Dig Vinay Singh in his order said, 'From the perusal of the chargesheet and the material on record, I am satisfied that there is sufficient material to proceed against the accused for firing at Aditya.' Mr K N Sharma, father of victim Aditya, had lodged a complaint with the police on September 25, 1990 that his son was 'deliberately shot in the forehead by accused D P Singh' even though he did not take part in the agitation."

" 'Don't take the matter into your own hands,' Martin said during a press conference March 5. 'Don't follow the individual. Just call 911 because we believe this individual is dangerous and may react in a negative way.' "

-------
Right. The cops haven't been able to catch this creep for months, but they expect potential victims to call 911 instead of taking responsibility for their own defense?

"The two detectives accused of ripping off about $1.5 million in cash and cocaine from drug dealers plan to plead not guilty in federal court today, even as law enforcement sources say they have accused other officers of misconduct."

"As many as 10 officers, retired and active, are now under investigation as a result of information told to internal affairs and federal investigators since the arrests of retired detectives Thomas Rachko and Julio Vasquez in late November, the sources said."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There is no doubt in my mind that millions of lives could have been saved if the people had not been "brainwashed" about gun ownership and they had been well armed. Hitler's thugs and goons were not very brave when confronted by a gun. Gun haters always want to forget the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which is a perfect example of how a ragtag, half starved group of Jews took up 10 handguns and made asses out of the Nazi's. — Theodore Haas, former prisoner of the infamous Dachau prisoner concentration camp
