"Less than two months before Election Day, the 10-year-old ban on assault weapons is scheduled to expire unless Congress acts."

"But with Congress at loggerheads over gun legislation, it's likely that Republicans will let the Clinton-era ban expire on Sept. 13." ...

"Although most Senate Democrats supported the ban, there were exceptions. Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold sided with the Republicans, saying the ban is more symbolic than effective."

"Robbers pointed a gun at Bryan Rutherford and demanded that he hand over valuables from his pickup Tuesday evening in Lemay."

"Rutherford didn't pull out cash or jewelry. He pulled out a .22-caliber pistol hidden in his vehicle and opened fire in what authorities believe is the first instance of self-defense with a concealed firearm since the Missouri Legislature loosened the state's gun laws."

"The man holding what turned out to be a BB gun on Rutherford was hit several times in the torso before he and two accomplices fled. Three suspects were later captured and charged."

"Rutherford was uninjured."

"Dean Roberts, a member of the alliance, is a former special agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency. LIE: Assault weapons were used to kill one out of five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty from 1998 through 2001, according to FBI data.

FACT: The FBI data doesn't differentiate between regular rifles and what the gun banners call "assault" rifles. The claim that "assault" weapons were used to kill one in five LEOs is disingenuous.

"Assault weapons have been used in some of the most notorious mass shootings since the ban was enacted in 1994, including: the 1997 shooting at the Caltrans Maintenance Yard in Orange, California, where four were killed and two were wounded (AK-47 assault rifle); the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 that left 13 dead and 23 wounded (TEC-DC9 assault pistol and Hi-Point Carbine); the 2000 shooting at the
Edgewater Technology office in Wakefield, Massachusetts, that left seven dead (AK-47 assault rifle); and, the 2001 shooting at Navistar International Corporation that took four lives and wounded four (SKS assault rifle)."

Notice, of course that they won't mention that these weapons are used in less than 2 percent of all crimes, and that the ban did nothing to stop these shootings. So the gun banners' answer to worthless laws is to pass yet more worthless laws. Isn't that the very definition of "insanity?"

"Consumer Federation of America (CFA) today asked President Bush to keep his promise to renew the federal ban on military-style assault weapons which is set to expire on September 13, 2004 - just six months from now."

"A recent CFA survey showed 76 percent of the general public and 57 percent of gun owners want Congress and the President to renew the assault weapons ban."

"Though the U.S. Senate recently approved renewing the assault weapons ban as an amendment to an onerous gun industry immunity bill, the gun lobby and Congressional leadership killed the entire package. President Bush did nothing to save the assault weapons ban, despite his repeated promises of support."

"The choice is indeed clear. Either we elect President Bush, or America regresses back to the days of Bill Clinton. ..."

"Oh how very true! If a socialist Democrat had won in November, the federal government would have surely expanded all sorts of unconstitutional Nanny State programs that compromise the delicate balance of the free market. They would have probably greatly increased farm subsidies, and put new restrictions on campaign donations. Those liberal Democrats would have sent billions of dollars in foreign aid to corrupt regimes in Africa and the Middle East, and pumped up funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. The Department of Education may have grown by seventy percent by now, with programs designed to appeal to emotion rather than reason, carrying such patronizing names as 'No Child Left Behind' or some other name that only a condescending Democrat could contrive."

"Opponents of concealed weapons filed a new lawsuit in line with the Missouri Supreme Court’s finding that the concealed-gun law imposes an unfunded mandate on local governments. The suit comes two weeks after the high court upheld the constitutionality of the Legislature’s authority to allow concealed weapons but said the state may not have provided counties with enough money to issue permits. That would be an unconstitutional unfunded mandate."

"The suit was filed in Moniteau County Circuit Court, where House member Larry Crawford obtained a concealed-carry permit last week. Crawford sponsored the concealed-gun bill that the Legislature approved last year despite Gov. Bob Holden’s opposition."

"The Supreme Court’s ruling left the door open to challenges in different counties over the cost of screening applicants and issuing permits. In Clayton, St. Louis County Counselor Pat Redington says her office is finalizing a lawsuit that will challenge the law. She says she plans to file it in the next few days. Until the issue is settled, St. Louis County police won't accept applications for concealed firearms permits."

"The academy is located on Frances Road near the Luck Tract, one of the hunting areas in question."

"The shotgun, which is the only firearm allowed for hunting in the area, is also the only gun allowed by the Town Code to be discharged in Ashland with a permit from the chief of police. The proposed ordinance, as it stands, would get rid of the permits and make it illegal to discharge any firearms, shotguns included."

Anne Arundel County Police say a 15 year old girl brought a 22-caliber pistol to Southern High School in Harwood, along with a list of students she said she was planning to hurt.

One of the students who saw the gun told their parents, who alerted school officials.

Police went to the girls home and say her father turned over the gun to them.

Police say the girl admitted she took the gun to school in her purse but denied having a list of people she wanted to hurt.

She's charged as a juvenile with carrying a deadly weapon on school property and other offenses.

The girl has been released to the custody of her parents.

-------
Let's see, the guy did his homework, listened to his constituents as well as the experts, who told him that the ban was completely worthless, but he's "illogical and reprehensible?" Apparently gun banners judge "reprehensible" based on whether or not the legislators swallow their odious agenda.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A federal judge fined a Florence man $10,000 and ordered him to spend nine months in home detention for possessing a World War II-era machine gun.

U.S. District Judge Karen O. Bowdre also put Paul David Connolly, 49, on five year's probation and ordered him to perform 150 hours of community service.

Connolly, who had faced a possible 10-year sentence, had been indicted in April for possessing a Sten machine assembled from a kit. He later pleaded guilty.

Connolly's attorney, Jim Sturdivant, said Connolly possessed the weapon for recreational purposes only and he hoped the sentence imposed by the judge Wednesday will not be appealed.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin said the sentence would be reviewed and that federal law "clearly prohibits the private possession of a machine gun."

-------
The National Firearms Act of 1934 provides for the registration, and the taxing of the transfer, of a class of weapons described as NFA Title 2 weapons (sometimes referred to as "Class 3 weapons"). These include machine guns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, silencers (also known as suppressors) and also a class of weapons known as "Any Other Weapon" (AOW). An example of an AOW is, but not limited to, a smooth barreled pistol or a short barreled combination gun.

The transfer tax on machine guns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, and suppressors is $200. The transfer tax on AOWs is $5. This transfer tax is a one time only tax and not an annual tax. Each time an NFA weapon changes hands, the tax is charged.

"The US, the report tells us, is a 'violent, crime-ridden society'. Almost 12 million criminal cases were reported in the country in 2002, with the number of homicide cases being 16,110, as against 15,586 in 2000. The US ranks first in private ownership of guns, and some 350,000 gun-related crimes were reported in 2002. Many of these cases involved juveniles who have easy access to firearms. In 2002 there were said to be some 21,500 sinister gangs in the US with a combined membership of around 731,000."

"A St. Paul police officer has been fired for leaving a University Avenue bar minutes after a man was shot to death last month, but the police union says the discipline went too far and will be challenged."

"Benner will remain employed through the grievance process, because he is a military veteran and a public employee granted special rights to contest a discharge, the sources said."

"Officer Benner, who was off duty, has said he was drinking at Arnellia's about 1 a.m. Feb. 20 when a gunman entered and fired several shots. A bystander, Stephen Kuma, who had stopped at the bar to celebrate his 46th birthday, was fatally wounded. Two men have been charged in the shooting."

"The cynical Alabama populist Governor George Wallace used to scoff that there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties. Thank God that manic cracker spent the bleak winter of 2004 in an otherworldly realm. For today there isn't a plug nickel's worth of difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. The parties of Jefferson and Lincoln have clearcut the redwood forests, drained the gulfstream waters, leveled the purple mountains and scalped the amber waves of grain only to come up with George W. Bush and John F. Kerry: Skull and Bones-dum versus Skull and Bones-dee."

"God bless our meritocracy!"

• Britain allegedly attempting to get round EU embargo on selling weapons to Libya;

• UK troops also said to be advising on 'modern defence techniques';

• Could be seen as sign of Libya re-entering international community;

-------
British subjects can't get or use arms to defend themselves, but their worthless government will supply arms to a terrorist regime. They proudly proclaim the righteousness of their gun ban and continue to keep law-abiding, peaceable citizens disarmed, but will supply Libya - a known terrorist regime - with weapons?

"A project by US law enforcement agencies and states to merge criminal and public records with commercial databases has angered privacy groups."

"The Multistate Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange, or Matrix, was conceived by database products company Seisint, and developed with input from Florida law enforcement, the FBI, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the US Secret Service as a way to aggregate data from various databases to fight terrorism."

"A number of states - including Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York and Utah - have enrolled in the free and voluntary Matrix programme. But just like the US government's Total Information Awareness (TIA) surveillance infrastructure before it, civil liberties group are sounding alarms about Matrix."

"The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) calls Matrix a data surveillance program every bit as dangerous and Orwellian as TIA."

"McKenzie has covered two walls of the anteroom to the gallery with more than 100 Xerox-like images of handguns taken from small catalog displays in the back of 'Guns and Ammo' magazine, all printed on standard sheets of plain white paper. He accompanies his prints with a two-page artist's statement that makes it clear he opposes the interpretation of the Second Amendment that allows one to claim constitutional cover for buying a handgun, though you really have to come in with that attitude to get the piece. 'Guns and Ammo' readers might look on this as a further fetishizing of all these guns, pinned to the wall like a manufacturer's booth at a gun fair."

"Under federal law, domestic violence offenders can lose their guns and a new campaign seeks to make sure victims are aware."

"A gun control group and a domestic violence center say victims of domestic violence often don't get enough protection from the criminal justice system when their abuser has a gun."

-------
That's because no law will stop an abuser who wants to get a gun from getting one. The criminal justice system is not enough, because it provides paper protection.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them. — Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
