"In spite of all the hoopla regarding gun violence in America, a study by the US Department of Justice appears to dispel claims of rising gun deaths. The government study received minimal if any mainstream media attention."

"Estimates from the National Crime Victimization Survey indicate that between 1993 and 2001 approximately 26% of the average annual 8.9 million violent victimizations were committed by offenders armed with a weapon. About 10%, or 846,950 victimizations each year, involved a firearm."

Gun sales issue blurs line between suspects and guilty

"The key operative word here is 'suspect.' The people are suspected because they are on the government's watch list. Under our system of law, a suspect is not assumed to be guilty. In other words, a terror suspect is not automatically a terrorist and it is wrong to treat such a person as if they were."

"The issue gets even more fuzzy because it involves the government's terror watch list. This list is supposed to contain the names of people who are believed to have links to terror groups or possible terror groups. Unfortunately, it has been demonstrated that the list is not necessarily reliable."

"While I am a full-fledged supporter of the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, I have a really hard time believing that our forefathers, when writing the Amendment, thought ordinary citizens would end up hiding behind it to own semi-automatic weapons."

"The original reason these gentlemen added this amendment was because they believed citizens of the newly created United States of America deserved to defend themselves against an enemy, foreign or domestic." ...

"These founding fathers had in mind that each individual had the right to own their rifles or pistols, and, while they never specifically clarified what type of arms these are, I really cannot fathom that AK-47s and semi-automatic machine guns were what they had in mind."

"I think I have an idea that would save money and lives: Have large men escort violent criminals. Admittedly, this approach would risk another wave of nausea and vomiting by female professors at Harvard. But there are also advantages to not pretending women are as strong as men, such as fewer dead people. Even a female math professor at Harvard should be able to run the numbers on this one."

The proposed law wouldn't just make gun shop owners who break the law liable. It would apply to any merchant who knew, or even 'should have known,' the buyer planned to commit a crime."

"For the first time since Ohioans were permitted to carry hidden guns, legislators want to revisit the year-old law to address complaints that rules about guns in cars are too strict and journalists should not have access to lists of permit-holders. A leading opponent of concealed weapons said Thursday the effort will lead to even more changes that would endanger public safety."

"The law's original sponsor, Republican Rep. Jim Aslanides of Coshocton, said he's working with law enforcement officials and the attorney general's office on the changes. The primary requirements that permit seekers pass a background check and take 12 hours of safety training will not be changed, Aslanides said. ..."

"...it would strip away the rights of millions of law-abiding drivers due to the actions of a few who break the rules and kill people. Oddly enough, you don't hear liberals calling for sportscar restrictions, begging the motoring public to accept them, 'if it saves the life of just one pedestrian!'"

"All of this goes to illustrate that the gun control contradiction doesn't work. If 'car control' eliminated the need for pursuit Camaros, I'm sure liberals would be 100% behind it. Meanwhile, our cops still need AR-15 rifles in their cars..."

"The City of Toledo is one of the most gun control-laden cities in the state. Was this victim prevented from taking measures to defend herself by Toledo's ban on small, concealable firearms, which is particularly discriminatory against lower-income families? Did she fear a city law which bans possession of firearms in public places?"

"Had she read the advice of Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre, given to store owners inquiring about how to protect themselves after a rash of violent robberies? Navarre 'teaches small business owners not to have a gun,' and says he 'wants owners to comply with criminals because anytime you have more guns in a tense situation, the better the chance of people getting shot and it's just not worth it.' "Perhaps the writer is correct and the polling data concerning the gun bill was slanted. I'll grant you that much. And I'll even grant that we have Second Amendment rights."

"But after granting all of that, there's still a more important question to be asked: Is allowing guns into bars a wise idea?"

"The answer: Of course not. Allowing guns into bars where alcohol is served isn't wise. In fact, it's contrary to common sense."

-------
Several questions arise:

1 - Does a person who walks into an establishment that serves alcohol necessarily intend to drink?

2 - Does the person described above have a right to defend himself?

3 - Since more deaths are caused by drunk driving than drunk drinking should we "allow" people to drive their cars to establishments that serve alcohol?

"Gov. Mike Rounds has signed a bill that defines new crimes, repeals antiquated crimes and revises the elements of many existing crimes." ...

"Beginning this July 1, the measure will restore gun rights after one year for people who presently may never own or use guns again. It will not reduce other penalties for family violence."

"A 1996 federal law bans gun possession for life when people are convicted of family violence, whether felonies or misdemeanors. However, officials say the federal prohibition does not apply in states with gun ownership restrictions for domestic violence."

"U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik was clearly not a happy man yesterday when he ruled in favor of Seattle and its police chief, who ordered officers to stand on the sidelines four years ago while roving bands of thugs brutally beat Mardi Gras revelers in Pioneer Square."

"Eleven victims sued the city, saying that a decision by police Chief Gil Kerlikowske to pull officers out of the Pioneer Square melee put innocent people in jeopardy. Innocent bystander Kristopher Kime was beaten to death in the February 2001 rampage that also resulted in thousands of dollars in property damage." ...

"Lasnik quoted case laws that 'a state's failure to protect an individual from private violence, even in the face of grave danger,' doesn't violate constitutional rights."

"The Constitution does not require the police to make the correct decision at all times, especially in highly volatile and fluid situations as these..."

"At the end of the day, however, it was not the police, but rather private assailants who inflicted those harms upon them."
