The man who illegally bought the gun that was used in the 1998 fatal shooting of Chicago Police Officer Michael Ceriale was sentenced Wednesday to 25 months in prison.

Ezra Evans, 29, of Chicago could have faced a stiffer prison term, but his cooperation was critical in prosecutors' case against James Jackson, the high-ranking Gangster Disciples leader to whom he sold nine guns, including the one used to kill Ceriale, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Sean Berkowitz.

"My Constitution is a very flexible Constitution. It may well be stupid, but if it's stupid, pass a law! Don't think the originalist interpretation constrains you. To the contrary. You want a right to abortion? Create it the way all rights are created in a democracy, pass a law. The death penalty? Pass a law. That's flexibility." --Justice Scalia

"Convicted felons, forget about firearms. Don't carry. Don't even try to buy," Gov. Roy Barnes warns. "In Georgia, felons with firearms go back to jail." The message of the first public service announcements in Georgia that target convicted felons is as simple and stark as the prison cell images in the opening scene.
