"I continue to support the Second Amendment rights of Kansans."

"The safety and security of our citizens is a top priority for me, and that's why I've listened closely to the Kansas chiefs of police and other law enforcement officers who urged me to veto this measure because they fear hidden weapons make Kansans, including our officers, less safe."

What's Lurking In That RFID Tag?

"A hacker goes into a store, buys a can of soup with an electronic tracking tag glued to the side, and takes it home. There, he attaches a different tag, this one with malicious code. He goes back to the store and lets the item get scanned anew at the cash register. This time, the code jumps from the tag onto the store's computer system, changes product prices and skews sales data, and creates an entrée for an outsider to gain access to the store's internal databases."

"This isn't the stuff of hacker lore, says Andrew Tanenbaum, professor of computer science at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. On Mar. 15, he presented a paper outlining why he believes that scenario could very well be played out in so-called radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags that are being used in growing numbers around the world to help companies track shipped items."

"Take a moment to peruse this headline and lead paragraph from the Baltimore Sun."

Police identified a gas station owner yesterday as the person who fatally shot a 22-year-old Baltimore man during a botched robbery Friday in the Village of Cross Keys shopping center in North Baltimore.

"This would appear to be another tragic robbery that turned deadly for the victim, but in reality, the 'shooter,' the gas station owner, was not the criminal but the victim who was defending himself. Three men ...attacked the businessman as he headed for the bank to make a deposit. After breaking away from his attackers, he retrieved his legally owned and carried gun from his car and shot two of the perpetrators, one fatally."

"On the day that the Pacific Northwest's most extreme anti-gun rights organization plans to honor Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) is asking why."

"'Friday at noon, Washington CeaseFire is going to honor Chief Kerlikowske for his efforts to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners, when he can't even keep track of his own firearm... More than a year ago, the chief's personal 9mm Glock was stolen from his city-owned car while it was parked on a Seattle street, while he and his wife were shopping. Such negligence should not be rewarded.'"

"Gottlieb noted that CCRKBA's $1,000 reward for the recovery of Kerlikowske's pistol still stands."

"From the start, Fairfax police declared that the killing of Salvatore J. Culosi Jr., 37, was an accident and that the SWAT officer who fired had done so unintentionally. Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. said that when a person fires a gun without malice and unintentionally kills someone, 'they do not commit a crime.'" ...

"I feel for the family of the victim in this case... But I also feel for the police officer. This is a good police officer. Fine record, almost 17 years. He's as shattered by this as any good police officer should be."

"The measure has strong support from law enforcement agencies."

The program's 2003 results show Othello as one of three eastern Washington 'Hot Spots' for gun crime and a fear of gun crime, but the small sample surveyed is keeping researchers from drawing definitive conclusions on the Adams County town."

"It's right there … comfortably buffered by ratification requirements and the right to bear arms; between Article VI and the Second Amendment. It's been there for 215 years, since Sept. 25, 1791, when Thomas Jefferson and other insightful Americans decided they must amend the Constitution because British tyranny wasn't such a splendid cup of tea."

"And it's still there behind some glass case, in fading ink written by the tip of a feather pen: 'Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech or of the press.'"

"So, when Pennsylvania politicians consider a bill that would mangle the Founding Father's decree of free speech, it leaves many to wonder, 'Did these people skip grammar-school history class?'"
