"Democrats thought they would win confirmation for more of President Obama’s nominees by waiving the 60-vote filibuster hurdle for executive branch appointments, but they didn’t factor in nervous red-state senators afraid of taking tough votes that could sink their reelection in November."

"The latest apparent casualty is Vivek Murthy, a 30-something British-born American doctor, whose parents are from India, and whose Ivy League credentials and activism on public-health issues includes co-founding Doctors for America, which launched in 2008 as Doctors for Obama." ...

"The News and Sentinel printed a letter ... titled, 'Protect the 2nd Amendment.' As you might expect, that letter writer was a gun owner. Unfortunately, that writer is typical of many present-day gun owners. His letter repeated all of the usual bogus talking points offered by the NRA. Things like: 'the Second Amendment is under attack,' 'Wake up America,' 'universal gun registration is coming,' 'the United Nations is going to take our guns,' 'Obama is going to take our guns,' 'well, someone is going to take our guns,' etc. His letter mentioned just about every silly, baseless, unfounded conspiracy theory currently being floated by the NRA."

"I'm a gun owner but I don't believe, for one minute, that my Second Amendment rights are at risk. ..." ...

"A nuclear weapon and a gun may be far apart on the arms spectrum, but they’re more alike than not. They’re both designed to kill by setting off detonations – one massive, the other miniaturized. Both depend, also to different degrees, on deterrence for their effectiveness. What’s more, the imperative to 'go forth and propagate' seems to inform both nuclear proliferation and the profusion of guns. But nuclear disarmament and gun control are difficult to enact in the United States because nuclear-weapons advocates and pro-gun campaigners twist the law, in the form of treaties and the Constitution, to their own ends." ...

"Idaho’s legislators and governor should – but most probably will not – pay attention to a new batch of statistics about gun safety in Washington."

"As accidental gun injuries rise, the most common age of those who unintentionally hurt or kill themselves or others is 22."

"You know. Upperclassmen."

"Idaho’s legislators and governor will certainly not give this a thought, having already ignored all the good reasons to keep guns off crowded, chaotic and youth-filled campuses, and having already ignored every college president and the state’s police chiefs ... in favor of a stubborn Dirty Harry fantasy. They are in the grip of a passion, a faith, and the dictates of this passion involve overlooking or denying certain facts." ...

"It’s Friday night in the dorms at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It’s 40 below outside, and the atmosphere inside is considerably warmer. Students are letting loose with a couple of beers."

"It’s not a place for a gun to be."

"But that’s one of the many places that Senate Bill 176 would allow a gun to be on University of Alaska campuses if approved in its original form. The bill, by Republican Sen. John Coghill, of North Pole, would overturn many University of Alaska restrictions on the possession of firearms on campus. People would be allowed to have them in dorms, classrooms, offices and numerous other places." ...

"On March 14th Breitbart News reported on how Lisa Atkins pulled a handgun on a burglar in her home and pinned him down until police arrived 23 minutes later."

"The burglar, Joseph Baker, broke through two doors to get inside Atkins's Junction City, Oregon, home ..."

"Breitbart News recently talked to Atkins about that morning, asking about her experience with firearms and how it came about that she was ready to defend her life and property when the burglar appeared."

"Atkins told us she is originally from the UK, so she did not grow up around guns ... Then she moved to the United States in 2005 and realized a gun 'is an inanimate object, relying on its operator as to whether it is put to good or bad use.'" ...

"Seven Republicans are running for governor and a chance to unseat Democrat John Hickenlooper, and one of them, Adams County businessman Steve House, has identified '10 things we all seem to talk about.'"

"House also identified the 'four things we should be talking about' when he spoke to the Jeffco Republican assembly on Saturday: a bigger energy economy; an education reformation so Colorado is competitive globally; Colorado coming up with it’s own health-care plan; a governor who is willing to stand for Coloradans rights against federal regulation ..."

"Second Amendment rights of law-abiding military veterans continue to be stripped away without due process."

"A 1998 agreement between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the FBI was one of the first jabs at veterans’ Second Amendment rights. The agreement was made to send the names of veterans into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, triggering a virtual lifetime ban from owning firearms of those who are labeled as 'mentally incompetent,' meaning they need or desire the assistance of a fiduciary to help them manage, often complicated, financial affairs." ...

"Lee's note: The National Shooting Sports Foundation does not send out alerts or 'take action' notices very often. In fact, they're rare. When they do urge action, it's usually a significant issue."

"In this case the NSSF is calling on gun owners to contact their senators to stop Sen. Dianne Feinstein's attempt to force the Administration into issuing an executive order banning the importation of certain semi-auto modern sporting rifles."

"Here's their press release:"

"A federal appeals court is giving a Hawaii man another chance to argue that he should be allowed to carry a gun in public — a privilege rarely given to people in the state."

"The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion Thursday sending Christopher Baker's motion for a preliminary injunction back to District Court. Baker filed a lawsuit in 2011 against the Honolulu Police Department after he was denied a license to carry a gun in public for self-defense."

"The appeals court said the lower court erred when it ruled that Baker couldn't prove Hawaii's restrictions on carrying firearms violate the Second Amendment." ...

"Governor Christie’s colorful and caustic barbs at his town-hall-style events often generate headlines and send Twitter into overdrive."

"But it was Christie’s cautious comments at the end of a recent event in Mount Laurel that caught the attention of gun-control advocates, who have rallied around legislation that would lower the capacity of ammunition magazines to 10 rounds from 15."

"'It is a very emotional issue on both sides,' said Christie, who is almost certain to have a bill on his desk this spring to sign or veto. 'Gun control and the Second Amendment are enormously emotional, combustible issues. My job as governor is to be the adult in the room.'" ...

"Garden State advocates for restoring gun rights are white knuckling as Republican Gov. Christopher J. Christie decides how to game harsh gun legislation Democrats dropped in his in box."

"'Over 100 pro-gun right supporters attended the Assembly Law and Public Safety committee hearing on March 13 and over 80 of us testified in great detail against the magazine capacity ban,' said Frank Jack Fiamingo, president of The New Jersey Second Amendment Society."

"'We made our pleas, used our logic, used our reasoning, and they completely ignored us,' he siad. The legislation regulations on magazines makes thousands of gun owners a new clase of felons." ...

"Police across the country may be intercepting phone calls or text messages to find suspects using a technology tool known as Stingray. But they're refusing to turn over details about its use ..."

"Police say Stingray, a suitcase-size device that pretends it's a cell tower, is useful for catching criminals, but that's about all they'll say."

"... The secrecy ... is pitting obligations under private contracts against government transparency laws."

"Even in states with strong open records laws ... little is known about police use of Stingray and any rules governing it."

"A Stingray device tricks all cellphones in an area into electronically identifying themselves and transmitting data to police rather than the nearest phone company's tower. ..." ...

Cops or soldiers? America’s police have become too militarised

"FROM the way police entered the house—helmeted and masked, guns drawn and shields in front, knocking down the door with a battering ram and rushing inside—you might think they were raiding a den of armed criminals. In fact they were looking for $1,000-worth of clothes and electronics allegedly bought with a stolen credit card. They found none of these things, but arrested two people in the house on unrelated charges."

"They narrowly avoided tragedy. On hearing intruders break in, the homeowner’s son, a disabled ex-serviceman, reached for his (legal) gun. Luckily, he heard the police announce themselves and holstered it; otherwise, 'they probably would have shot me,' he says. His mother, Sally Prince, says she is now traumatised." ...

"Do you drive a car in the greater Los Angeles Metropolitan area? According to the L.A. Police Department and L.A. Sheriff's Department, your car is part of a vast criminal investigation."

"The agencies took a novel approach in the briefs they filed in EFF and the ACLU of Southern California's California Public Records Act lawsuit seeking a week's worth of Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) data. They have argued that 'All [license plate] data is investigatory.' The fact that it may never be associated with a specific crime doesn't matter." ...

"Gun control and/or thought control?"

"A middle school workbook for Illinois 7th graders reportedly claims that the Second Amendment ... requires gun registration."

"The disclosure about the apparent gun control-promoting workbook was first posted to the Illinois Gun Owners Rights Facebook page by a concerned father."

"In explaining the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights, the workbook purportedly explains that 'This amendment states that people have the right to certain weapons, providing that they register them and they have not been in prison. ...'"

"You don’t have to be any kind of historical scholar to know that the actual text of the Second Amendment contains no such gun registration requirement whatsoever." ...

"A proposed gun-training center for Firestone was blocked under heavy fire from the neighbors. Now, the Second Amendment Firearms Experience is trying again, and this time it wants Frederick."

"SAFE is acquiring 144 acres but plans to use only 10 to 12 acres for the training center itself."

"In 2013, SAFE tried annexing into Firestone from the Kurtz Ranch, a rural area near County Road 17 and Colorado 66."

"The hearings ran for hours as neighbors organized into a group called 'Save the Vrain,' saying that the range would be too loud, too unsafe, too close to wildlife and riparian areas, and a 'flagpole annexation,' depriving nearby Mead and Platteville residents of a say." ...

"Grace Baptist Church on 4th Avenue in Troy is not normally packed for a Sunday service, but this week there was something extra in the program. The church decided to give away a rifle."

"People came from as far away as New York City to take part in the raffle for a free AR-15. Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, who spoke during the service, admits it may sound unusual to some people that a place of worship, a place for peace, is raffling off a weapon."

"'Yes is it unusual,' said Assem. McLaughlin. 'Is it illegal? Absolutely not. And it's not unethical either. And the people have every right to support the second amendment. I hope everybody does.'" ...
