Our gun laws are a terrorist's dream

"For suspected terrorists, the United States must be a very confusing place. They're banned from flying on commercial airliners, yet they can stroll down to their neighborhood gun store and purchase anything they want, including assault rifles."

"There's no law against it, and no agency able to stop them, including the so-called Department of Homeland Security."

-------
Funny, then, that they don't do it. Maybe they're not aware of how easily they can purchase weapons here. After all, the media hasn't shouted it loudly enough. Or maybe the TNN (Terrorist News Network) is not working properly to let terrorists know they can purchase scary "Assault" rifles in the U.S.

"Although Bush made a special trip back to Washington from vacation to sign legislation offering a new federal right of appeal to Terri Schiavo's parents, the president and his aides have said almost nothing about the mass shooting in Red Lake, Minn. — the deadliest outbreak of school violence since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colo."

"The Minnesota tragedy has increased alarm among some school safety professionals about Bush's efforts to eliminate funding for two major programs meant to prevent classroom violence, including a Clinton administration initiative to help schools hire more police officers." ...

""The bottom line is the gun lobby is too important a constituency to the Republican Party for them to do anything," said Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center, a group that advocates gun control. "The sad reality is if Terri Schiavo had been shot, the administration would not have lifted a finger to help her."

-------
KABA Note: The sad reality is that no law would have prevented this from occurring, a fact that Rand and Brady cannot seem to grasp.

"Unexpected opposition by the National Rifle Association to a proposed license-fee increase driven by the state’s sportsmen could scuttle a bill scheduled to be heard today by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources."

"The license-fee increase, which would raise resident big-game licenses and some resident fishing licenses, was produced by a coalition of the state’s sportsmen and conservation groups and backed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife."

"The bill, which would raise resident hunting fees for the first time in 13 years, passed the House Ag Committee last month and now faces a test in the Senate."

"Should people lose rights because they are sympathetic to, but do not actually help, terrorist groups? Should law enforcement be the arbiter of those sympathizers who should be placed on 'watch lists'?" ...

"Ultimately, though, despite all the fears generated, background checks simply aren’t the solution. The Federal Brady Act has been in effect for 11 years and state background checks even longer. But despite all the academic research that has been done, a recent National Academy of Sciences report could not find any evidence -- not a single published academic study -- that background checks reduce any type of violent crime."

"Surely, it would be nice if these regulations worked. But it's hard to believe they will be any more successful stopping terrorists. Criminals and terrorists share a lot in common, starting with the fact that what they are doing is illegal. In addition, terrorists are probably smarter and engage in vastly more planning than your typical criminal, thus making the rules even less likely to be successful."

"It came on the heels of some other publicized eruptions of gun violence--including a rampage by a defendant at an Atlanta courthouse and a mass shooting at a worship service in a Milwaukee suburb. In the past, any of these might have spurred gun-control advocates into a major push for action. But this time, not much has happened, and not much is likely to."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
